E3 2002: Burnout 2 Screens
See what Criterion\'s next racer looks like, in the digital flesh.

May 24, 2002 - Building on the announcement from last week, Acclaim and Criterion have released new details on Burnout 2, the sequel to Criterion\'s sleeper hit arcade racer. Coming to all next-generation consoles this fall, Burnout 2: Point of Impact brings movie-inspired car-chase action and more insane crashes with its detailed arcade handling model and vehicle deformation system.

Burnout 2 includes 32 separate stages spread over 6 different locations, including the Rocky Mountains, Los Angeles, New Mexico, and an international airport. 14 vehicles are drivable, plus seven secret cars -- a police cruiser, \'50s hot rods, stock cars, and others. The race series includes point-to-point and circuit races, spread out over a new points-based championship system. There\'s also a new Pursuit mode, with competitive and combative racing against police cars. Aspiring race champions can develop their skills in the Burnout Driving School.

Of course, Burnout is as much about the crashing as the racing. Burnout 2\'s crash system and vehicle deformation are apparently "all-new," so we look forward to what Criterion can do with a new iteration of its graphics engine. Traffic AI has been upgraded with three distinct driver types, so there\'s more unpredictable behavior on the part of potential crash victims. Also added to the larking-about category are new big-air jumps, which earn daring racers points and boost power, and a Custom Series, with cosmetically modified cars.

The original Burnout came out of nowhere to establish itself as one of the most entertaining arcade racers on PlayStation 2. Thus, we have high hopes for the sequel -- look forward to seeing more of it between now and its fall release

The first one wasn\'t about the graphics.  The game looked terrible but was fun as hell to play.
