Title: Cant sleep..need suggestions
Post by: luckee on May 28, 2002, 11:50:03 PM
More often than not, I find myself not being able to sleep for the last few months. ZIts quite aggrivating when one has to go through every other day with 1-2 hours of sleep.

I try to steer clear of sleeping pills b/c I dont want my body to become dependent upon them to fall asleep. I only take some over the counter stuff if I really, REALLY need sleep.

Any suggestions guys/gals?

I\'m with you man.  I go to bed around 12am and wake up anywhere between 3:30 and 4:00.  Occasionally I get a little more sleep between 6 and 7, but not often.

Benadryl works real well though.  I just don\'t like taking drugs every night to fall asleep.  Melatonin also works well, but you can\'t take more than 1mg or you will have some absolutely whicked dreams and a bad hangover the next morning.

Heh.  I\'ve been up since 3am. I got 3 hours.  Mine is totally stress related though.  I have so much to do in the next two weeks it\'s ridiculous and then the boss man just through more crap on me yesterday.

well here in cali it\'s 4am, and I\'m still awake so I guess any solution I had for your problem probably wouldn\'t work.  Usually if I have some important day I\'ll take a Unisom to put me to sleep, but I only do that in a pinch.

It seems like my normal sleep schedual is about 5 am.

Mine isnt? lol..we have to have a race car built and delivered by friday..as of today, I think the motor still needs to be assembled. Then it needs to be dyno\'d..then driven from So.FL to VA.

Also need to get about $9k in customer parts shipped out today. As well as dealing with the locals that come in and want this and that done. Not to mention phone calls from the ppl who we need to send stuff to and trying to smooth that out.

Not saying yer day is stressful, but just take a look up :)

I also have a few other personal things that need to be done today, so it looks like a long night at the shop for me.

I never said your job wasn\'t stressful.  I just said mine was stress related.

Take a chill man. :thepimp:

Go get some sleep.:D

Oh yeah, I have a motor to build this week too for a show we are doing next week.  Only problem is we still haven\'t received it and it looks like we aren\'t getting it until Friday morning.  Which means I hope we can get everything we need to build this motor on Friday cause we shoot on Monday.

Dave has a real old Champ Dirt Car.  We are rebuilding it with a 350.  Trying to keep it authentic with newer parts, etc...  Our show is on ARP.  We went and toured there manufacturing facility.  Very cool seeing how they make bolts.  Unbelievable.  There formula one bolts are amazing.  They are so tiny and the weight they can bare is nothing short of phenominal.  They are kept in air tight containers and you aren\'t allowed to touch them.  Top secrety crap.

Sounds like cool stuff man!!! Did they mention what the F1 bolts are made out of? My guess would be titanium. Super light and super strong.

Yeah, they were titanium.

They were stamping out regular rod bolts too. They take a roll of real thick wire and feed it into a machine.  It chops it into bolts then this head slams into the top of it. 3 different heads.  One makes the taper, one the flat part of the head, one the head itself.  It\'s real cool.  Then it goes and gets threaded.  It\'s amazing how fast they can make a bolt.  We will integrate the video into the show.

I have trouble falling to sleep, but once I am out, I am out until at least 7 am.

Sometimes it takes me hours just to get to sleep. I think I might have an overactive mind.

Take melatonin.  It is what your body naturally produces to put you to sleep.  Just take very small amounts of it.  I usually take a 1mg tablet and cut it up into little pieces, maybe 1/3.  It puts me to sleep fairly quick.  I have the same problem as you getting to sleep .  My mind just wanders constantly.

Have you tried warm milk? I hear that puts you to sleep fairly quickly too. Even if it dosen\'t, it still gives you a good excuse to suckle on yer GF\'s titty for a few extra hours a night. :D

I just turn a fan on low and blow it in my face.  I don\'t know why, but it works.

Simple answer: Work out!  This naturally gets your body tired later in the day and easily allows you to fall asleep.  Ever since I started working out again I\'ve never slept better.

Sleeping mediactions have been known to affect your dreams, and it\'s your dreams which actually do the "healing" overnight to make you feel refreshed when you wake up.  I actually was on prescription medication to help me fall asleep and noticed I didn\'t dream as much and woke up not feeling as refreshed and ready to go as I used to, so I got off it.  It works, but not perfectly.

And as stated above a constant sound or hum helps to put you asleep.  This simply masks any other noises that would otherwise wake you up & I\'ve heard soft sounding hums naturally put people at ease because when we were in the womb the sound of our mother\'s heartbeat was the first thing we heard (and felt).  Just keep the fan on instead of auto on your A/C system.

well I\'ve been avidly body building for some 5-6 years, and working out has never helped me sleep.  And if I do it too late it\'ll keep me up.  But then again I usually use weight that makes me have border line anurisms, so it get\'s the adrenaline up there, and wirez me for a good 4-5hours.  In addition, after the workout I get a good dose endorphins, so I\'m feeling a bit euphoric.

I\'ve found that unisom works, and also slap\'n the tummy tickler doesn\'t hurt.

ya its better if you work out early in the day if you want to be tired later on so you can fall asleep, in your case you are just getting your body pupmed up so it will not want to sleep

Warm chocolate milk really works.  Then climb into bed and get yourself really warm.  Another thing to try is to eat something.  You know how after a huge feast you feel tired?  Same concept.  Also what I find most helpful is to sleep on the side of your body that you usually don\'t sleep on.  Usually I sleep on my right side.  If I can\'t sleep I sleep either on my right or on my stomach.  It gets you uber comfortable.  You can also try to put a pillow or part of the blanket between your knees.  It\'s supposed to make your spine align, and it\'s also hella comfortable too.  Sleeping at the end of your bed might work.  You can try put on some Enya.  If all else fails you can buy a copy of "Gone with the Wind" or "War and Peace" or better yet, "Ivanhoe" try reading that and getting bored.  Then again, any old textbook could do that too.

When I can\'t sleep, I just stay awake for the entire night.  Then when I get off work the next day, I go straight home and go straight to sleep.  Then I find that my sleeping schedule is fixed.  The only problem is weekends because I tend to sleep in until 4 in the afternoon, and once I do that, Sunday night/Monday mornings just become hell all over again.

I tried that today. I was up ALL night last night..well 1 hour of sleep. Not much considering I woke up at 7am the day b4. So basically awake for 23 hours. I was at work from 8-9am- 7pm. Went to sleep imediately, woke up at 10..went back..then again at 1am. No matter how sleepy I am, I cant sleep through the night if I goto bed before 10-11pm.

Well this is what I do, overdose on all caffine products, cola\'s and coffie\'s etc...

this helps me to stay active during the night which is the time I love the most, then when the caffine level goes down the body takes over again with a vengence, I fall to sleep like a brick, get about 2 hours of sleep if I\'m lucky then I have to go to work. Again over dose on caffine keeps me going during the day, then I get home, fall to sleep. Then I wake up and withdrawal symptoms start rearing their ugly head. Sometime of cold sweat, shaky hands and uncontrollable thirst until my next nightly dose is ready.

Repeat.

Seriously, I just told you an ancient geek secret to a productive lifestyle. Use this wisely.
