I have to admit, when I first heard about Ninja Gaiden, I was shocked because I had played and beaten the first ones on the SNES and had loved the series. Then I saw the video trailer from E3 and was less than underwhelmed. I mean, the way the characters moved and the way the battles took place looked far too much to have that same DOA3 feel in a graphical sense only surrounded by many enemies and now carrying a sword. I felt there was no way that it could possible revive those feelings I once had when I originally watched that first opening scene in the original Ninja Gaiden with the two ninjas jumping at each other in the moonlight.
Now, with this new batch of screenshots, I can\'t say that the magic of Ninja Gaiden has been revived, but I can say that my anticipation for this game as a title in one of itself rather then as a sequel or recreation of the classic has grown considerably. Anyways, enjoy these screenshots and discuss the game below.

pffft who he think he is ? walking around with that sword on his back...some sort of ninja? Either way, Kenshin would 0wn him and then some. :D
-
Well, it certainly looks nice. A bit like DOA3 I would say, but nice.
-
no thx
gimme onimusha 2 or tenchu 3 anyday
-
the graphics are fantastic :) i am curious as to how it plays, any descriptions? are the levels small (to maintain that level of graphics) or what?
-
God damnit, Tecmo.. where is your GameCube lineup? You apparently forgot it on the bus! Seriously.. I\'m strongly disappointed that Tecmo has failed to deliver Nintendo fans the Ninja Gaiden sequel they rightfully deserve!
Ninja Gaiden: NES
Ninja Gaiden II: NES
Ninja Gaiden III: NES
Ninja Gaiden IV: Xbox. Wha..? They bribed us!
-
Those screens actually look impressive...
-
Usin\' the DOA2 engine too. :D
-
uhh.. how about some gameplay screenshots, and not this crap
-
Oh my God...Who ever did the main charater modle should be shot !
FFS it must of been the same person who made Barry in the Resident Evil REMAKE (NGC) look like a Paedophile ;)

LOL I think his suit looks a bit like Raiden\'s in MGS2.
And if that were a good thing
-
These look really good, I wonder if they are in-game shots or not. They look about on par with DOA3 so I wouldn\'t doubt it...
-
It looks good, but again I worry how it\'ll play--and chrono those are certainly in game shots--it\'s not far removed from DOA3.
As for Onimusha, I don\'t know how you can make that determination. For one you\'ve never played this game, and anyone who played the original had to love it. There is reason to believe that they can recapture that magic. And two, Onimusha was a good game, but hardly revolutionary, very easy, incredibly short and prerendered all over the place. I am looking forward to Onimu 2, but I don\'t see how you can categorically dismiss this game.
-
Yah, these shots may not be actual gameplay, but they are definitely ingame, kind of like MGS2 screenshots from the cutscenes. Not actual gameplay, but in game nonetheless.
As for how it plays, that doesn\'t matter much but I highly doubt that there is any comparison between this game and Onimusha 2. One is like an adventure game and the other looks to be an action game. I think Shinobi would be a mush better comparison along with Tenchu 3. Although Onimusha 2 will be neat, I really don\'t think it\'ll be better than Tenchu, which is imo, going to be the greatest of all the "ninja" type games being released this fiscal year.
-
Tenchu does look good, kind of like MGS with swords. I\'m kind of hoping that NG borrows from Tenchu--I would be dissappointed with a straight action hack and slash from a franchise like NG. That and I prefer the art direction in NG--I\'m not a big anime fan and Tenchu definitely has been influenced by it.
-
Have you ever played the original Tenchu? Quite an amazing game. The cutscenes are done in a very artistic way, it\'s quite pleasing imo. I don\'t remember just how anime influenced they were, but I know they looked like they were hand drawn rather then some type of graphical suped up version of Tenchu. Anyways, I hope they are all good for different reasons, that way I won\'t feel like I am constantly repeating the same games with different stories.
-
Yes I did, sadly the PS1 couldn\'t quite pull it off, but I did really like the game--it was my favourite game that year (I wouldn\'t give it back to the friend who loaned it to me). T2 was a little of a let down--more of the same I thought.
I don\'t want a carbon copy either, but I want more than a hack and slash beat \'em up from NG.
-
Looks nice..
Dont forget Tecmo are masters of faking pics though (see DoA2/DoA2HC, DoA3).. ;)
I got high hopes for Tenchu 3 btw..

I don\'t follow...I have DoA 2 for DC, and DoA 3 for Xbox. Any preview screen shots I\'ve ever seen haven\'t done the game justice...

Let me explain a little better..
Tecmo/Team Ninja or whatever released mocked up screens of DoA2/DoA2HC (PS2) and DoA3.
What they do is they render the screens at Xbox maximum resolution (1900x*something*) on the Devkit (the Xbox can not run a game in that res in a ingame environment) then they downsize the picture to regular res.. They get perfect AA silky smooth image..
Ive seen "real" framegrabs from Xbox framebuffer (ingame screens, what the game looks like on the Xbox in its memory.. no fakes) and there is a huge difference..
Maybe you\'ve seen the doctored DoA2HC screens (check IGN), silky smooth image.. No jaggies at all.
Ive played DoA2 on PS2 and its nowhere near the pics.
Lets compare..
DoA3 Tecmo screens:
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fxboxmedia.ign.com%2Fmedia%2Fpreviews%2Fimage%2Fdoa3%2Fbg19.jpg&hash=82ee85c15b0f483c91fa6cc8b408986d52dd4249)
DoA3 - real (Note: These are not framebuffers.. The framebuffers have much better colors and abit better quality.. Nothing like the doctored pics though):

DoA2:HC Tecmo screens:

DoA2:HC Real (Not framebuffer but still)
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fps2media.ign.com%2Fmedia%2Fpreviews%2Fimage%2Fdoa2%2Fdoa2_113.jpg&hash=70b4c673845e5b4a2c361ce558274ac863e2a5e4)
We\'ve had this debate here before.. I think its a pretty well known fact that they (like many others) fake their screens.
I hope it answers your questions :)

Ya\' know, if anyone is a protester of older classic games becoming 3D, it would be me. I\'ve protested every game including this one, but even I cannot deny the fact that this game is looking gorgeous. Sure, it looks a lot like DOA3 and I do mean a lot like DOA3, but it still is gorgeous. That is what this debate is about, right? If so - then I don\'t think you can deny how the game looks.
A completely different debate would be on how it plays and from the video released at E3, I got a DMC vibe from it. Maybe it is just me, but that is the vibe I got. A ninja running around doing impressive moves , with DOA3 combo\'s and all in all a simple button masher that features a ninja.
-
fatson, I have the game (DOA3), I have an HDTV, and it looks a lot closer to the "doctored" pics you show there than the framebuffer one. I don\'t know, but maybe tecmo doctored my version of the game to save face.
-
That is quite interesting Watchdog, because I happened to have played DoA3 on a HDTV setup aswell - and the image that was shown clearly indicates that the game doesn\'t even have proper AA.
But yeah, I\'m sure Tecmo gave you a special version of DoA3.
-
What! Seven on the side of a PS2 fanboy!?!
Call the papers, this is breaking news.
-
Hey fastson, you rock. I finally learned why the games dont look as good in action as they did in previews.
From my personal experience with DOA3, I barely noticed a difference from DOA2, mainly cause I dont pay much attention to graphics, but gameplay in fighting games. But in general, what I noticed was a smoother and touched up appearance. Overall, very little difference for me cause the actual graphics and model essentials were not changed but just touched up.
As for Ninja Gaiden, I kinda felt that after the third one of NES, it was over for the series. I think the first one rocked, very hard game. The 2nd one was good and the 3rd one was like the finish. Only so much you can do with the same gameplay base. (Was there one for SNES?)
So this game will probably have to copy from the MGS/Tenchu/Shenmue genre. I just do not see the original Ninja Gaiden game being brought to today\'s standard. It may be good, it may be bad. It\'s doubtful to be original, that is a hard task to conquer after all. But then it is also made by Tecmo. What was the last excellent game they made.
This will probably be a good game, but nothing to go crazy over for and definitely not worth buying an Xbox for.
-
Lol Blunt, his name is fatson, not fastson.
You\'re going to offend him like I did earlier today--don\'t mention it, just giving you a heads\'s up.
-
yunno.. not that long ago, i was almost sure that Tecmo was a company with integrity. WTF happened to that? DoA3 was nothing but a hack on DoA2 with prettier graphics, Dead of Alive Extreme Volleyball??! WTF!?.. and a Ninja Gaiden game. I dont know how the game will play. If its like DMC then im sure it\'ll be good, but i seriously doubt they will be putting in all the stops to appeal to hardcore fans and make a good, original quality game. i dunno.. ever since i saw DoA:EV i think i just went insane.
buh.. guess we\'ll have to wait and see what its like.
BTW, what kind of ninja has that kind of physique!?!
-
Thanks Watchdog
Remember back in tha day when Tecmo made awesome games for NES. Ahhh that was when Capcom was barely starting out and it was just Tecmo, Nintendo, Konami, Acclaim and Sega.
-
I definitely remember that. Tecmo Bowl and Tecmo Baseball were some of the finest games they made.

Its funny.. The framebuffer screens I saw were in HDTV resolution and they had jaggies.. Very clear picture quality though.
But NOT even close to the doctored screens... :)
