Title: Good god people are crazy!!!!!
Post by: luckee on June 01, 2002, 10:51:59 AM
Wouldn\'t be me!!!
"On August 16, 1960, Kittinger jumped his last Excelsior jump, doing so from an
air-thin height of 102,800 feet (31,334 meters). From that nearly 20 miles altitude, his
tumble toward terra firma took some 4 minutes and 36 seconds. Exceeding the
speed of sound during the fall"

Funny story about this guy.  I met him a few years back.  They have a big Sun and Fun flyin here in Tampa every year.  I met him because he takes people up in his by-plane.

So here\'s the deal.  A couple of years ago we had a large fire right next to the airport where everyone camps.  Actually it wasn\'t even at the airport, it was just outside the airport in the woods.

We are talking to Joe and he is telling us about the jump and some other things he\'s done.  So we then interview him and you know how reporters try and get people to say things like, "Oh I was scared," or "Never seeen anything like that in my neghiborhood."

Well she actually asked the dude who jumped out of a plane in a different freaking atmosphere if he was scared.  Um, hello!!!  The fire was a half mile away.  This guy jumps out of planes 102,000 feet up!!

I was so freaking emberassed.

Anyway, he is still alive and very lively.

i doubt he broke the sound barrier, he would be deaf as his eardrums would implode

ever hear a sonic boom?
its frightening

speed of sound is 760 mph
he fell 102,800 feet , thats only about 19 miles and some change

When something breaks the sound barrier, it just sounds like thunder.

"like" thunder?   hmmmmph

what is unaided terminal velocity, 1024 ft/sec  ?

to hit sound barrier, he\'d need 11146 ft/sec (760 mi/hr) roughly
(unless this internet conversion calc.  is wrong)

did he take jango fett\'s backpack?

think about it..you really think something of this magnitude wasnt recorded and logged with the utmost scrutiny? besides the air isnt as dense that high for some distance, so terminal velocity doesnt come into play untill he gets a little lower.

As for going deaf, I would think the sound would be "after" him if I remember how this works. The people doing these things are WELL protected..wearing the same suits that astronauts use.

Breaking the sound barrier can easily kill a person, and no, he wouldn\'t able to hear the explosion.

Yeah, a plane around 9/11 broke the sound barrier by my house and it sounded like a massive explosion.
