Who\'s the most important not what you think but from a public stand point. In japan i would have to say square(only cause of FF), enix(only cause of Dragon Quest), capcom and konami. In the USA i would have to say namco, ea, sega, capcom, and rockstar games. So who\'s the most important 3rd party you guys think? :thepimp:
-
Square/Squaresoft
-
How can i forget about perhaps my fav. 3rd party...........................................capcom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:thepimp:
-
I would like to see a Megaman on PS2
-
Sega.
They have better sports and all-around games while Squaresoft is an overrated one-trick-Pony.

Capcom. No other third party (\'cept Sega now) has as many franchises , and not just franchises but high selling franchises. No other third party has as many blockbuster games either. Not to mention Capcom has been an important third party since the 8-bit days.
-
DirectXbox, yer ignorant comments NEVER fail to amaze me
-
Probably Sega. They were arguably the best 1st-party, and now they\'re arguably the most important 3rd-party.
If not them.. EA. Maybe Activision, Konami, or Capcom. Rockstar? Meh, once they exploit GTA and other "racy" games to the point of them not being fun anymore.. Rockstar is over. Rockstar seems to be a one-trick pony.
-
Probably Sega. They were arguably the best 1st-party, and now they\'re arguably the most important 3rd-party.
They failed to sell the DC, what makes them so important?
Its what consumers like and what they are going to buy that makes a 3rd party important, not the games they make.
Its the 3rd parties that people buy a console for, such as Square or Capcom.
-
1. SquareSoft
2. Sega
3. Capcom
4. Electronic Arts
5. Rockstar???
-
i cant believe noone said RARE
i hate nintendo with a passion, and even I know rare sells nintendo consoles
-
I believe it\'s a good combination of them that make a succesful console...
EA, Sega, Capcom, Square, Namco, and Konami are among the most important.
Rare is not included because the thread asked who is the most important 3rd Party? Since Rare has yet to produce for anyone but Nintendo, they have no part in here...:nerd:
...Squaresoft is an overrated one-trick-Pony.
I love how each of your posts can cause controversey...
-
I don\'t think Rare is third party. They\'re more like second party.
edit: oops, too late.
My ranking:
1. Capcom -- Lots-o-games \'n variety. Nuff said.
2. Square -- they\'ve recently experienced some problems (FF movie/FFXI in Japan), but they still make the games that have an enormous world-wide cult following.
3. Sega -- a lot of their games are too different to interest more than their small cult following, but some of their games coming out this year look like they will appeal to a broader audience.

Hopefully nobody will notice that

Explain yourself, and I\'ll counter argue it.

DXB isn\'t totally wrong.
Besides FF, what else has Square put out, worth mentioning?
Not that they need anything else.

Parasite Eve
Vagrant Story
Kingdom Hearts
Chrono Series
Romancing Saga
Front Mission
Racing Lagoon
Xenogears
Bushido Blade
Tobal
Seiken Densetsu
Just to name a few

You have made your point...
I admit defeat...
-
darnit Ashford!! I wanted a heated debate :D
-
I\'d say EA. I play mostly sports games and they make alot of good ones.
-
mm: Rare hasn\'t been worth it at all since Conker and I\'m really skeptical about SF:A. They don\'t produce the number of games as a Sega or Capcom, either.
A few months back I would have said Sega, hands down, but they\'ve cooled off since the initial software binge, in my opinion.
Right now I\'d go with.. wow I don\'t know. A lot of companies like Square and EA and Capcom and THQ and Rockstar and Activision have their gems, but not so many as to put them over the top.
So I\'ll go for my personal favorite third party in THQ, though losing AKI as a developer drops their value for me.

I\'m not debating the quality of those Square titles, but how many of them sell systems? No one says I need Front Mission
or I\'m not buying a console.

And a lot of people would say that Puzzle Fighter is not a good enough reason to buy a system.
You\'re right, that Front Mission on its own would not sell consoles, but I simply was debating against the argument that Square is a one-trick pony rehashing old ideas. Square makes a variety of good quality games, and is a valid candidate to be one of the most important 3rd parties.
-
Right but Square does not have many titles that people love and would buy a system for.
Capcom: RE, SF, Megaman, DMC, Genma
Sega: Daytona, VF, Sonic, Shenmue, Panzer
You could make the argument that these two companies are just as good in one genre as another. Square is good with RPGs, and they do other stuff too.
And then when you factor in the whore that EA is and all the publishing they do, they are much more important than Square.

Right, Capcom makes good Horror/Action and Arcade titles, and Sega makes good titles in a variety of genres. Same goes with Namco.
And I look back at my library of games, and most of the ones that stand out to me are made by Square. Yes there are a few made by Namco, a few made by Konami, a few made by Capcom, and a few made by Sega. However many of those games developed by Square which I mentioned about earlier actually do sell consoles (obviously not all the games I listed). The average Japanese gamer center around the RPG genre, and Square being one of the best developers for RPGs, stand out as ONE of the most important 3rd party developers.
Then you shift the field to the States, where Action type games tend to receive a better liking than RPGs. In such cases, arcade hits such as Daytona and Street Fighter begin to shine, and sell consoles.
Sales are relative to what kind of audience you have. Square and Enix were both big time companies here in Japan during the NES/SNES, however they were barely known in the States. Whenever there was a new FF released, or a new DQ released, people lined up the stores from days beforehand just to get a hold of the game. Many kids were mugged by people that wanted the game badly. So in Japan, the biggest 3rd party developers were Square and Enix.
Outside of Japan however, there is a different audience with a higher demand for other types of games, so the argument can easily go towards a different company.
You also have to remember the history of the companies which you mentioned. Capcom, Namco, and Sega all started out (and are still active) in the coin-op Arcade scene. Most games those three developers produced were Arcade games ported to consoles. One of Capcom\'s first ventures of creating a strictly Console based game was Resident Evil, and it was a large hit. Namco even more so is still coin-op based, with exceptions of recent hits such as XenoSaga (which by the way is only published by Namco, but not developed by Namco).
-
Square and Enix... in Japan
If those companies were to put exclusive games on the XBox you could sit and watch the XBox sales SKYROCKET
Capcom, EA, Rare, Namco
No further comment.
...*Square whore*...
-
I\'ll agree with the US/Japan difference.
I don\'t think most of Square\'s titles matter at all to US consumers, but in Japan they do move consoles and get people exited.

In Japan, Square and Enix
in USA its EA
and worldwide apeal.. its Capcom
but we all know Japan is the most important ;):p

How can any of you even think that Rockstar is a moderatly important third party? They have had how many breakthrough blockbuster games? One and that one is Grand Theft Auto 3 (even tho\' they only published it, right? DMA developed it, if I remember correctly). Either way, what happened to RockStar\'s so-called next "big thing", State of Emergency? It friggin\' flopped. And I personally suspect that after Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, that the GTA series will start to die down, leaving RockStar doin\' nothing except small games that don\'t sell a lot (Midnight Club, Smugglers Run and etc). They are far from an important third party. They are far from important.
And even though I hate Square and EA, I will admit they are both important third parties due to the franchises they do have. Square has the ultra popular Final Fantasy, Front Mission and Chrono series , that can and does sell systems. EA has their yearly updates to the same ole\' sports games, that for some strange reason also sells systems.
Capcom makes good Horror/Action and Arcade titles
Capcom makes good platformers (MegaMan, anyone?), fighting games (Street Fighter), survival horror (Resident Evil!), action-shooters (Dino Crisis 2), action (Devil May Cry), RPG\'s (Breath of fire series) and soon racing games (AutoMosdella or what the hell ever...;) ).
The variety that they have, with all those franchises allow them to branch out and put out hit after hit - thus making them one of the most (and THE MOST, in my opinion) important third party developers.
-
Well I think GTA3 is a horribly horribly bad game, but that\'s just me. State of Emergency is down right awful. And regardless, they are nothing in Japan, and I too believe them to be a flash in the pan here.
That\'s why I say Square\'s worldwide appeal to gamers (across all genres) isn\'t at the level of a Sega, Capcom, EA or even Konami. I think we may see EA sliding a bit in the near future.
There sports games are loosing some of their shine, and their work is really very sloppy. Sega Sports will soon eclipse EA\'s and with all Sega\'s other franchises, Sega could move into a very profitable position.

anyone know how badly madden outsells nfk2k series?
at least they both > nfl fever *shudder*

Are you asking or implying that madden does outsell NFL2K by a large margin?
I would like to know myself...

I don\'t know the sales numbers, but eventually people will get tired of the same thing every year.
Fever is not that bad a football game. It\'s inferior, yes, but it doesn\'t have that far to go.
-
I think there are 2 most important 3rd parties: Rare and Squaresoft. None of the others have made games that I could see myself buying a console for. However, I bought a PSX for squares games, and for the longest time only had final fantasies and chrono cross for it. I know others who bought N64 for Rare\'s games (especially Goldeneye). No other third parties seem to me that they have that much of an impact. I would say Capcom comes after them, and the rest are way behind.

Grabs Shockwaves by the shoulders and shakes him violently
Read the thread, or skim over it.
Rare is a second party to Nintendo and doesn\'t have a place in this discussion.
Can someone explain what a Second party developer is?
-
Meh, sorry. I did skim it over. Guess I missed that. I guess you\'re right. Ok, if Rare starts to develope for PS2, throw them in then :p
-
i was under the impression Rare are actually listed officially as a 3rd party
Which is why there are so many rumours of them making games on PS2/Xbox.. its not just hope, its the possibility that i could actually happen..
-
Well on occasion they publish their own games, so technically, they\'re a third party.

1. Square (FF)
2. Capcom (Megaman)
Honorable mentions: Sega, EA, Konami, THQ

The 3D ones sucked. Nothing can compare to the MegaMan and MegaMan X series (2D). Though the last MegaManX left a lot to be desired.

It wasn\'t until recently, and remember those are still rumors. There\'s no way to indicate how much pull they would have if they were to go third party seeing as how they don\'t have software on any other system...

I thought we were talking about the 3rd party developers from a stand point of Sony, but then again, RARE will be making games for them now.

Has that been officially announced? Or just a strong rumor?

I believe it said so in the July issue of OPM2 although i could be wrong. I am almost sure of it.
