Title: New planet discovered
Post by: Titan on June 13, 2002, 03:48:21 PM
A new planet has been discovered in the 55 Cancri system. Interesting read. Its the size of the sun and is sort of like Earth and Jupiter combined.

Hrmm...well if the planet can sustain life, then you can bet us greedy humans will try to claim it for our own. I can just picture it now.

Us humans invading the home planet of some aliens. We attempt to take it over only to get wiped out by the far superior aliens. Then we run away only to have them chase us back to earth and destroy us like the peons that we are

"Discovery of a second planet orbiting 55 Cancri culminates 15 years of observations with the 3-meter (118-inch) telescope at Lick Observatory, owned and operated by the University of California"

15 year????  My word. That is one boring ass job.  I bet they are all gitty now and they had a party where the pepsi was flowing and the cheese puffs were spilling all night.

41 light years is not that far away. If there is intelligent life in that system, dont you guys think they would have already contacted us? same thing with all the extrasolar planets. They are not that far away.
The size of outerspace in unimaginable (to us). If there is life like the human race out there somewhere, its very very far away. Or we may very well be the product of a fluke accident and nothing like it has ever, or will ever happen again. (I\'m talking about intelligent life, not Microbial life) Its already been proven that extraterrestial Microbial life excists.

Just a quick comment. Maybe they haven\'t contacted us because maybe they don\'t realize that we are alive. Also, if they do know about us, they haven\'t contacted us because we are so pathetic with our killing and stuff. Either that, or they aren\'t as us or not developed enough for space travel.

What if there is another world that is basically a mirror image of ours? They consist of humans, and our as technilogically advanced as we are, goverment, law, etc.

That would be weird......

Wait, forget it, we have that, its called Japan.

lol

But anyway, if life intelligent human life where to exist the planet supporting it would have to be a mirror image of Earth. We are very lucky. Just think, if our planet was a mile closer to the sun, or farther, we would not exist. We are very lucky

Thats what you see in your science fiction, tell me what were scientists looking for when they sent probes to mars?  Little green men who fly saucers, or microbe life?  The only aliens that fly to earth are in your science fiction

I know that, i was being sarcastic,  in saying this new planet is just like jupiter, so if you cant survive on Jupiter why would this planet be any different?

What if there are lifeforms out there who are very very different from us. Most people think of little green men or whatever, but who says they have to look like us. For all we know \'they\' have the ability to communicate through thought, or particles, or whatever. Perhaps they see the human race as something on the bottom at the evolutionary level - like we see ants. We just might be the ants of the universe not even concious of the superior beings surrounding us. Hell, for all we know what we call the universe could be nothing more than someone\'s sandbox. :)

Animal Mother - You\'re wrong. Plain and simple. Life is alot more resiliant and adaptive than you think. I mean, if you take just a cursory look at life on this planet and what what it needs to thrive.. then yeah.. you\'re not going to be optimistic about what\'s out there. But if you look closer, you\'ll find life in even the harshest envrioments. Boiling sulfer pools, deep in the freezing bottom of the ocean under the north pole, and even cockroaches (which evolved in a radiation free enviroment) have adapted to thrive in heavily radioactive areas.

Then again, you\'re also just looking at carbon based life. What about silicon based life? What other compounds can support life? Even where there\'s just microbes, that\'s still a start. How many billions of years did it take earth life to evolve past single celled organisms?

Anyhow, I don\'t think we\'re evolved enough for Aliens to land. They know us.. they study us.. they\'re not stupid. They know sooner or later we\'ll all be partying at the bar and we\'ll take em out back, beat the sh*t outta em, and steal their flying saucers. Hell, I would.. and you would too. Don\'t lie.

simple point is cells come from other living cells

explain to me how a cell created itself, and i will believe you

the theory of life coming from a sulfer pool is full of holes
