In the spirit of the console wars (excluding bashing, flaming, fanboyism, etc.), which console do you think will win the "online" wars? As of yet, it seems to me that the Xbox has the best shot, the PS2 has a somewhat close second in terms of chances, and the GC seems to be far down the list.
Xbox: The Xbox Live design is pretty well thought out. Although it\'s BB only, meaning that it does cut most video players, the Xbox has a built-in ethernet card which, IMO, fully counters this and possibly then some. Plus I have BB, so it\'s no big problem for me.
PS2: It\'s possible that with games like FFXI, etc., it could draw enough buyers to beat the Xbox in the online market. But since it is basically a "here\'s how it works, now you do the rest" plan, winning would be purely of luck.
GC: No plan, no/little support. Correct me if I am wrong, but if this is the case, then it has little chance of succeeding.

This will eventually turn into a debate, it\'s unavoidable. Topic moved.

online capabilities will not determing the outcome of the so called "war"
its a gimmick that the devs are putting way too much emphesis on
this is why xbox is allowing PC users to use thier "live" service after realizing this

PS2..
Sure you must buy the BroadBand adapter.. But games like Automodellista, Ace Combat 5, TimeSplitters 2, Socom, Kessen 3, Armored Core 3, Tribes 2 ect. ect.. will draw alot of people.
Not to mention most PS2 online games will be free.. You just need that BBA that costs $39.99 and you\'re off..
-
Define what you mean by "winning" or being "successful"
If you mean sheer numbers, PS2 will win, purely because its user base is exponentially larger than the XBox\'s.. so even if a small percentage of PS2 users go online, chances are it\'ll still be more than if a large percentage of XBox users go online
But if you mean which console will have the largest percentage of their users online, then XBox obviously.
And i think you are underestimating the GCN\'s online plans.. i know ill have to buy the adapter just so i can play PSO
IMAGINE MARIO KART ONLINE!! *drools*

Mario Kart online would have no equal...it gets me all turned on just thinking about it:p
I believe Sony will "win" in the amount of people who sign up...narrowband is accessible just about anywhere and it\'s free! Excluding a game or two...a large selection to play online makes it the clear cut winner at this time.
I would have to say Xbox has the most attractive plan though...broadband is nice, voice communication on everything, and 9.95$ a month gets you access to any game, of course that\'s in addition to your service charge...the only downfall is the amount of games that will be available; there are a few gems (Halo Online, Unreal Championship, Shayde, etc.) but not a wide spectrum of choice. I see it taking off pretty slow, broadband will have its\' boom, but not for another 2-3 years...
And Nintendo, they aren\'t even focusing to go online because they know it\'s not time yet.

Not really. You still have to purchase a addon, which historically = failure. In all likelihood, the number of people with PS2 and have purchased the online adaptor will be, if not smaller at most comparable to the number of Xbox\'s. Plus it\'s going to be more confusing and difficult to use. In the end, it may come down to which system has the best games, but who can say who\'ll win that way.

No doubt in that.

Well, if Nintendo comes out will some spectacular games, maybe, but that\'s very doubtful as the GC has both Xbox\'s weakness in total systems sold and PS2\'s weakness in addon requirement.
-
I think PS2 will win the online wars, because so many more people have PS2s than any other console. However, none of them will come close to what PCs have for quite some time.

Perhaps you are underestimating Sony\'s chances, and how much Sony want this. I know the history of add-ons, but Sony are putting lots of support behind their online plan with big names such as Twisted Metal, Gran Turismo (in time :() and Resident Evil selling their adapter. I would fully expect MASSIVE advertising, with their free game, Twisted Metal Online Coupon, etc. for the $40 its really not going to seem like a bad deal.
The Hard drisk drive is a certain failure though, even with the might of Final Fantasy supporting it and a couple of other MMORPGs (found also on PC) it just has no chance. Although I for one know that im going to get into that action :eyemouth:

I dont understand why this is even a debate, its like saying what is going to sell more ps2 or x box, its a no brainer

The gamer will win of course. ;) Personally, I think Microsoft blew it a bit with BB-only (thinking especially overhere in Europe), but that certainly won\'t stop people signing up and enjoying it who do. I certainly will be up with PS2\'s plan and I think Sony will sell enough of the add-on for it not to be considered a failure.
-
Of course M$ will win!
I quote from TeamXBox :
...with an "organized" system like LIVE™ you won\'t have the headaches of a "chaotic" online gaming service. [referring to the problems of FFXI]
Here\'s a link to the article (http://teamxbox.com/news.php?id=3342). Do keep your stereos/speakers on while browsing.
They are teh funnees... :)

what is so chaotic about online gaming? and how will x box live fix this? by match up service?
im thinking about being the founder of teamps2
-
Well PS2 will have the numbers, but where is the revenue? How much can Sony make from this? Clearly, Sony thinks as mm does, it\'s only a gimmick.
I, personally, am really looking forward to xbox live. I have broadband, so I don\'t care about those who don\'t (although, I do agree with Seven that it probably wasn\'t the brightest idea).
I hope to see some of you boys out there with Unreal Championship (there is no need for TS2 with UC in my library), then we can see who can back their smack.
EDIT
It will be great to have a community (this one) from which to play with. I\'m really looking forward to seeing a familiar names out there.

That just maybe the biggest difference between the PS2/GC plan and Xbox\'s plan. Sony and Nintendo thinks this is a gimmick while MS does not. It is pretty certain that online gaming will take off sometime in the future, and will be BB-only. The only real question is when.
-
the answer is where does ms get their revenue for their free zone service
dont ask me because i dont know where
what makes you think online gaming in the future will be bb only? may be in the far future, 5+ years

They don\'t (unless they somehow get ad revenue). That\'s why Xbox Live isn\'t free.

Since BB is basically the natural evolution of of the internet. It will be dominate eventually.
-
yeah, eventually = no time soon
plus, how many parents are gonna wanna tack on another 20$/month on top of thier 50$ ISP bill?
-
What\'s the extra $20 a month for?
-
thats what xbox live will cost us after the 1st year
-
I thought they didn\'t announce a price yet. Every estimate I\'ve heard was $9.95.

And "no time soon" = sooner than you think.:p:D

no way, BB barely makes up 20% of the online community and universities make up half of that

And gamers make the other half.:D
That 20% figure means nothing. It\'s the rest of the online community that matters, and if they decide that they should get BB, then they will get BB.
PS:Universities aren\'t counted in that 20% figure.
