Title: FF XI Online: More problems !
Post by: BizioEE on June 17, 2002, 01:18:26 PM
""However, although the patch seems to have fixed many issues, other problems continue to plague the ambitious online RPG. Most embarrassingly for Square - and indeed for Sony - is the revelation that the game is entirely incompatible with certain models of PS2. Some (unspecified) PS2 models allegedly refuse entirely to boot the game, instead displaying an error message and ceasing to function. Sony is thought to be aware of the problem, and players encountering it have been asked to notify the company, although it\'s not known what kind of fix is planned.
Perhaps even more damaging for the commercial success of the game, however, is the situation regarding the PS2 hard drive in Japan. FFXI requires a hard drive to be installed before you can play it, and it appears that poor sales of the game to date (compared with other titles in the Final Fantasy series) are almost entirely attributable to the massive shortages of hard drive stocks.
Most consumers are being forced to buy PS2 hard drives as part of an ISP service bundle rather than at retail, effectively squeezing out anyone who already has a broadband connection, and even those lucky enough to be allocated a drive are having to wait up to seven weeks for it to arrive. There are reports of gamers desperate to try the title having to ring around multiple ISPs on a regular basis until they find one who actually has a unit in stock (and is prepared to sell it).""

why do we want to read news from totally bias individuals?

You know, as much as I like to see Square fall on thier collective faces, this kind of online venture is incredibly difficult to pull off.

Blizzard has horrendous problems with Diablo2.

Everquest was literally unplayable.

MSN and Zone were terrible, only now are they good (and how long has that taken?).

Add online difficulties with a HD addon and modem and you have a serious logistics nightmare.

But I have to say poo-poo to sony and they incompatibility--how does this happen?

Don\'t be surprised if MS live hits its fair share of problems.  See, the problem with slinging sh!t over your head, is that it stinks and often comes right back at you.

I honestly can\'t understand why you would want Square to fail. So that consoles online never take off?

People incesantly bash Square for their lack of innovation in recent years, but as soon as they push the envelope (possibly farther than anyone in the console arena has in recent years) you go and ridicule their venture.

I think Square (and Sony) haters who are quietly snickering in the corner as Square stumbles through what amounts to completely new territory should keep in mind the reprecussions that FFXI failing carries. If the most succesful RPG franchise in the world, from one of the biggest gaming companies in Japan can\'t succeed, do you honestly expect Game Arts, Treasure, Capcom, NAMCO, and a whole slew of other Jappanesse videogame makers to push as they should for an online revolution?

As for the incompatibility issues, that is something that Square should have tested for, not Sony, because obviously the consoles work with every game except FFXI,and it\'s far easier to modify the code than the consoles. So poo poo to Square.

Don\'t take any of this personal Watchdog, because I realize the remark about Square was offhand, and not the gist of your post. I just needed to rant a bit about the people who find it hilarious that FFXI is the BOMBing!

I am sorry guys, but if this was anything to do with an Xbox game, you guys would be jumping all over it.
I mean when it had trouble with hardware in Japan, you were all over it, saying how bad it is. But what the PS2 is nearly 3 years (or is) old in Japan, and they bring a game out, that isn\'t compatible with some of the units! i am sorry but that isn\'t on!!
Don\'t take this reply as a BIG bash at Sony, I don\'t want sony to fail in any shape or form, i think they have done incredible with the Playstation, the way they came in with no experience and stole the market, and they have supplyed some of the best games i have ever played on there playstation. And can\'t wait to see what they do in the future, with the likes of the PS3.

But what is good for one company should be the same for another, regardless of there name!

p.s i didn\'t make the other post about Final Fantasy online, to say yes it is failing, i made it because of a few issues i had with the game i.e installing it to the hard drive. I would give nothing more, then to have a massive world online, where i could join up with all you guys to play together, and the day that we all can is going to one of the best days in console history, and i hope that all game developer try there hand at online gaming, because since i have been playing online i.e Counter Strike, and Medal of Honor, i have realised that online is the only way to go now!
:D
