How long until the destruction of the human race, if ever?
The way I see it, with technology getting more and more advanced, and the ideas of mankind getting more and more radical, our destruction is inevitable. How long do we really have until we kill ourselves off? How long until an atom bomb is invented that is small enough to fit in your pocket (a terrorist\'s dream)? How long until a bomb is invented (discovered?) with so much destructive force that it could incinerate our earth in the blink of an eye? Or for things we don\'t have control over...How long until aliens from space come down and take over our planet? How long until that great and dreadful day of the coming of our Lord? How long until earth is hit with an enormous meteor killing everything (as many scientists say, it\'s not if we get hit by a meteor, but when)? How long until our Sun gets too large to live under, or does some unexpected and deadly thing?
Or is our destruction really inevitable? Is the human race destined to die, or will we always find ways to survive?
Make sure to post your response so if that day does come, we can look back on this and see who was right. ;)

As long as it happens when I\'m dead, imagine living with that?
-
well the sun is expected to go into a red giant stage in 2 billion years (I think), then our galaxy will collide with andramoda. So I would say at the most we got 2 billion. But I believe the human race will be gone long before that, so I\'de guess we have anouth 150 years, they way were going currently.
-
A good reason not to have children...
-
i think we have till 2050. i dont want to sound pesimistic but with the way things are going with this planet our destruction is inevitable.
-
good job of not being too pessimistic :)
just inevitable destruction, no biggie
-
Soon.. Next week probably? Yea right.
-
I dunno, WTF do I look like Nostradomus? I do know that mankind as we know it will not live to see the next millenium tho. You don\'t have to be psycic to figure that one out.. we\'re just predictable.
-
If we have lasted this long, whats to say we can\'t last this long again?
-
Yeah, we\'ve been around since the dinosaurs. We rule!!!
-
By the time Ive finished typing this post.

Because in the thousands of years up until now people couldn\'t hurt more than a few other people at a time... now we can nuke eachother or perhaps shoot off some Ebola virus. I\'ll give mankind another 100 years tops - unless we somehow evolve very quickly and get WAY more intelligent than right now - and thus sees the light in living peacefully...
-
Not sure.... but it starts tomorrow.

I give us well more than until 2500. I\'d say its thousands upon thousands of years before we even get close to becoming extinct as a species.
You say that our technology advancing is a bad thing, but I see it as a good thing. We realize already the deadly weaponry that has been created, and are moving to correct that. Research on bigger and more powerful bombs has decreased dramatically, and we are working on spending billions on missile defense systems.
Overall though, I don\'t think there are enough people who want to see the human race end for it to ever happen. There are people willing to give their own life for a cause, but I don\'t know that there are too many who would want to give everyones life for one. That would just be pointless and stupid. We have survived thousands upon thousands of years already, and I think we have come to the point where we will be able to survive thousands upon thousands more, even under the worst of circumstances. If people began to nuke places, there would be areas designed to house people safely in such conditions.
And besides, how many nukes you think it would take to kill everyone in the world? There are enough to kill a ton of people now, but with how people could take shelter from the radiation, I don\'t think we have enough to kill everyone in the world.
And I also think that it may be less likely than ever that we will be whiped out. The way we control the world, we would never let another species evolve to become the dominant one. Our progress in areas like space travel will only lead to a greater and greater chance of our survival.
As for aliens, why do we assume that they will want to kill us all? They would almost certainly be friendly. Otherwise, it is hard to advance as far as they would need to in order to get here. Besides, it may not even be possible to travel that far.
And as for the apocalypse or any other religious theory...I don\'t buy any of that stuff.
I give us many thousands of years at the very least. I clicked other, because I didn\'t think after 2500 accurately represented that belief. Maybe if it were after 25000, I would have clicked it.
Besides, Time is all relative anyway. If we ever are able to travel up to the speed of light, there could really be no limit.

december 22-23, 2013....... I mean the mayan calendar can\'t be wrong.
-
I actually believe the Rapture will occur before we nuke one another.
-
We\'ll live forever... think about it.. of all the crap we are doing to ourselves, the average age of death is gettin higher.. we have organs that we dont use anymore, and well, as said before, technology is just gettin better. Its evolution my friends... even if we are just a plague. we will live on... like a virus.

Hey, speak for yourself, some of us do get laid. ;)

I don\'t care when the humans all die. Just as long as its after[/i] I\'ve passed away. :)
-
2012? What is expected to happen then? Anyway, I chose after 2500. I think that we will live for a long time. As long as we don\'t nuke ourselves.

Lots of evidence points to December 21st, 2012 as a significant date. I think the Mayan calendar is where the date originated from. The Mayan calendar, the most accurate calendar ever found which accurately marked significant events throughout history, goes until that date then just stops. The date can be found from UFO sightings websites to scientific websites to religious websites, and was even in the final episode of The X-files. :) If you do a search for “December 2012" or the “Mayan calendar” or something like that, I\'m sure you could find lots of sites with info about it. I saw a site that gave lots of details about the date about six months ago, but I can\'t seem to find it.
I find it really hilarious when reading religious (Christian) websites that talk about that date as being the Second Coming of the Savior, because the Bible clearly states that no man, not even Jesus Christ, knows the day of his coming (in Matthew 24:36).
I personally don\'t believe that date means too much. The Mayans probably figured that 2000 years was long enough into the future and just ended on that date because if they didn\'t they would have to waste even more time chiseling their calendar into rocks. :)
I do believe that our destruction will occur before the year 2050. If I had to make a guess, I would say from 2013 to 2020. And I agree with Vivi, I believe the Rapture will occur before we kill ourselves off, but because of the violence in the world at that time, it will be a very close call. I hope Jesus has his plane tickets reserved, or he might arrive a little too late. ;)
MPTheory, just out of curiosity, what organs are you talking about? (*laughs at Samwise’s joke* :D) I never cared much for health class, so if they taught it I must have missed it.

Now what happens when America get’s their missile defense systems up and running? Will enemy, neutral, or even allied countries just say, “Well, I guess it’s ok as long as we’re not in a war with them.”? I don’t think so. Us having immunity to missiles makes them feel vulnerable. Enemy countries will find new ways to break through the defenses, and even neutral and allied countries will try to break through the barrier for that “just in case” situation. I don’t see anything good coming out of these missile defense plans. Any way I look at it, I see weapons getting more and more dangerous in the future. And even if every country doesn’t ever feel the need for war (ha ha ha, yeah right), there will always be the terrorist groups fighting for their own cause, creating new weapons to get through the defenses.
And as for the apocalypse or any other religious theory...I don\'t buy any of that stuff.
Well we will all know for sure soon. Think about it, the Bible and other religious books have been counting down to this time for thousands of years. If nothing happens in probably the next 100 years, we will know that Christianity is false and was one of the biggest hoaxes ever recorded. But if something does happen, we will know it\'s true. What a time we live in. :) Without a doubt this is one of the biggest changing points in the history of our world.

you have no idea how many wanted to live in this time

Such a pessemistic way of looking at things. Why do you think that our establishing a missile defense system will lead to the research of more advanced missiles by other nations? More likely, they would try to establish the same sort of systems to compete with ours, making more and more areas of the world safe from nuclear missiles.
We have had a need for war since nukes were invented. Look at Korea, or Vietnam, or Russia in Afghanistan. People have already demonstrated the need for limited war, in which no nuclear weapons are used. We have already shown repeatedly that we can fight wars without using nukes.
As for terrorists creating new types of nuclear weapons...I seriously doubt that. They maybe could acquire what already exists, but no terrorist in the world could create new weapons. Even if they had the billions upon billions of dollars that would be required, how would they test the things without anyone knowing? I just don\'t see it happening. As for further nuclear weapon developement by nations, there doesn\'t seem to really be a need. The most powerful countries don\'t want to, because further research could create a disadvantage for them. Lesser nations often are content just trying to catch up, and often couldn\'t fund new research.

Will we? Does the Bible infact say that this is happening within the next 100 years? If not, nothing will be decided. If so, I doubt anything will be decided anyway. I mean, it wouldn\'t be the first time something involving the church has been proven wrong. That never stopped them before. Christianity, to me, is a joke. I just hope that if nothing happens, people start realizing how obviously false it is (yeah, yeah, I know, I\'m prolly starting something here. Just pissed off as I write (damn soccer refs)). Anyway, I already know that Christianity is false, and the biggest hoax ever created. How others defend it sometimes is beyond me.

This Sunday. Why ? I sense it !!!
-
And when (I say when, because... there will be no "if") WW3 breaks out I think we will lose a lot of humans... D-day: There were 3 million peeps fighting each other... now thats a LOT (more peeps then in my country). And this is now over 50 years ago. So, what happens when WW3 breaks out ?? How many lives will be lost ? Im sure it will be more then 100mill . But I doubt our entire race will be wiped out.
-
That\'s what I\'m saying. It is possible that a bunch of us will dies, but the entire race? I don\'t think so. Not that way.
-
I am not so very optimistic about this question. I don\'t believe
the humans start to grow extinct before 2100. I\'d say more along the lines of 2400 - 2800. There are a lot of factors we have to take in account to make such an estimation ;
Politics - for example the uprise of rightwinged parties in Europe.
Conflict and war won\'t escalate into a Nuke fest so quickly though.
But I just think that it\'s human mentality/morals/values we have to keep an eye on.
Environment - ranges from masses of ppl littering their neighbourhood to huge corporates toxing up nature. I also
despise a growing mass of ppl who have absolutely zero respect for animals and wildlife.
Things outside control of ppl - I believe there will be "things" which we have next to none control of. I\'ve always had a feeling one day ppl will be conquerred by insects. Kind of like an evolution of the Killer Beez. Ppl weren\'t on Earth just after the dinosaurs. On the scale of Earth existence humans started to exist only short ago ; insects and such were here BEFORE dinosaurs and they\'re still here. Imagin a plague of mosquitto\'s with human-deadly poison ! Personally I\'ve been paranoia about insects all my life.
Or some deadly allergy humans develope due to an evolution error in our DNA ; what if normal sunlight becomes a lethal threat ? I know there are ppl with such a desease today. I heard their skin vaporises by sunlight and eventually kill this victim.
All these aspects make me predict the End somewhere around 2400. Nothing lasts Forever, not even human race.

I agree with you when you say that we probably won\'t be wiped out from a nuclear war, or from any war for that matter. Like I said before, I believe the rapture will be the cause.
Such a pessemistic way of looking at things.
You may call it pessimistic, but I\'d call it realistic. There are terrorist groups spread throughout the world, and it\'s only a matter of time before they strike big again. Us having a missile defense system doesn\'t stop their attacks, but only makes them have to think of new ways to get passed it. You are right that they probably won\'t be developing ultra-destructive nuclear weapons or things like that. But like we saw on 9-11, they will be thinking of new techniques for mass killings. And other countries might want to build their own missile defense systems, but there will always be that one country holding a grudge, that one country only looking out for their own needs. To think that every country is going to go along and make defenses against missiles instead of making better missiles is unrealistic IMO. And to think that missiles won\'t ever get better than what we have today is also unrealistic IMO.
At least, that\'s my take on things. You can think that I\'m being pessimistic, and that\'s fine. :)
Will we? Does the Bible infact say that this is happening within the next 100 years?
No. It doesn\'t say by the year 2100 Christ will come again. But it does point to this time as the time of his coming. The more time that goes by without Christ coming, the more people that will lose faith. If Christ hasn\'t come by 2100, I\'d emagine that the number of Christian believers would be a lot smaller than it is today, and eventually will die out completely.
If not, nothing will be decided. If so, I doubt anything will be decided anyway. I mean, it wouldn\'t be the first time something involving the church has been proven wrong. That never stopped them before.
Do you have any examples to back up those big words? What in the Christian belief has been proven wrong?
Anyway, I already know that Christianity is false, and the biggest hoax ever created.
Really? How do you know?
How others defend it sometimes is beyond me.
I\'d guess it\'s the same way people defend the idea that there is no God -- they don\'t really have proof, but it\'s what they believe and they\'re sticking to it.
-
You know how do we know it hasn\'t already happened (The world ending and all) and we are all in hell? or Heaven? Or whatever you believe in?

I\'m not even gonna try to defend this. I\'m already engaged in one religion thread. It\'s my personal opinion, nothing more, nothing less. I shouldn\'t have posted things this way. Sorry, I just got mad about halfway through responding to a religious thread. That is never a good thing with me. Again, sorry :(

There will be no human extinction while the current owners of this planet are still in charge. It\'s bad for business.
I predict that our global implementation of the so-called neoliberalist agenda will lead to a depletion of resources, increase in pollution and disease, and an uncontrollable increase in population in the third world. This will eventually lead to a previously unimaginable widening of the gap between rich and poor, and eventually a class revolution of some sort. Only during or after this revolution will a massive extinction be possible. I think this won\'t happen for at least 100-200 years.
-
There is no God :) Simple as that. And religion is the root to all evil.
