Title: Religious Debates
Post by: on June 21, 2002, 08:21:41 PM
Since I\'ve been around here, I\'ve obviously seen a religious debate or two, and they all turn into 10-page opinion-fests.  I think at some point we need to just agree to disagree.  All parties seem to be intent on proving the other wrong, or trying to get someone to see things from their point of view - which I can honestly tell everyone here - is damn near impossible.

What does it matter what we can or cannot prove, regarding what happened when, or why it happened?  I don\'t think anyone can dispute that Jesus Christ DID infact exist, but many disagree on who, or even why, he really was.  I don\'t claim to have the answer.  No matter what his purpose was, he did leave us with something:  The Golden Rule.  What more do we need?  Treat others as you wish to be treated.  If every race, religion, and gender followed that simple rule, we wouldn\'t need any damned churches, or evangalists, or priests.

For the love of God (no pun intended), reserve the right to believe in whatever the hell you want, and respect others\' rights to be left the hell alone.

If anyone cares, I consider myself Unitarian Universalist.  These are the UU Principles:

-The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
-Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
-Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
-A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
-The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
-The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
-Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

Everyone remotely important understands the value of the reach around.

Yeah, you\'re right (pun intended, see below).

The biggest problem here is that everybody wants to be right.
As far as I can remember everybody takes the "My opinion is the TRUTH because it\'s MINE" approach.

Well, my opinion is that religious discussions are not only pointless but one of the most common origins of hate.

Why everyone and his dog is so interested in being the sacred guadian of THE TRUTH? I don\'t know, but it\'s stupid how some people will even start a fight to assure that everybody knows that they were right. What a waste of time.

Why don\'t let everybody believe in whatever they want. As long as it doesn\'t include sacrificies to their Gods or something like that or changing the way people lives, I don\'t see any problem at all.

Yeah, that\'s here.

But in real life, I\'ve seen discussions like this end with two friends punching each other (and that\'s not funny I can tell you). Even if it doesn\'t come to that extreme, it always ends up in a bad way.

People can be very agressive when it comes to religion, even people that doesn\'t seem interested on it.

Yeah, no use fighting. Just wait till you die, and you\'ll see if you were wrong or right.

My only fear is not knowing even then.  Atheists are the most pessimistic realists there are.  And damn in the this day in age its hard not to be one.

It\'s really up to you on what you want to believe. If you want to believe there is a God, good. If you want to believe there is no God, good. No one is forcing you to believe either... But at the end, you\'ll finally know if you were wrong or if you were right.

I just want to tell anyone who is on the fence, get off it.

You cant eat from both tables.

You either believe in God,  or you believe in evolution.

Why can\'t one believe in forms of both. Its not that hard of a concept to grasp.

I\'d say I\'m on the fence. I believe in God somewhat, but I also believe in evolution.

People need a "God" to dump all their sins and problems on.

That\'s it.  In a nut shell.  The bible is a book of stories written by people doing shrooms.

If not then why hasn\'t anyone parted the red sea lately?

Yes, that is basically it. People, including myself, want someone to dump their problems on, or to pray for something better.

I\'d be your new God, but I\'m way too busy moving.

But you are all still free to worship me as you see fit.

*grabs handcuffs, slinks off for a little R&R...

You know...no matter what religion you believe in or not believe in, your deity will always end up being the person you\'re having sex with. :D
