Is golf a sport or a hobby? Yes, i just got in a debate over AIM with someone about it, so i was wondering what you people think.
It\'s a hobby in my mind.
-
Its a hobby/game
-
It\'s a sport
It\'s a competative physical activity, in which scores are kept. How is it not a sport?
-
What\'s this? Clowd and I agree? Well, golf must be a sport then. ;)

Physical activites? Anoyone can play the game. A 300 pound woman can play it. Sure, it takes skill and practice, but still. don\'t see how anything can be classified as a sport when anyone can play it.
-
Anyone can play baseball or football or the like. It\'s just that not everyone can play it well. The same is true for golf. A 300 pound woman could walk out onto the mound, throw some pitches, and have played baseball. That doesn\'t mean she\'s good, but she could do it. The same is true with golf.
-
No, there is a difference between the two. In golf, the players get to hit the ball, get in the golf cart, or walk. They have time in between hits to rest. In baseball, the pitcher doesn\'t have that much time to prepare. Golf is a hobby, why, because in my mind anything that doesn\'t take up that much energy isn\'t a sport.
-
It takes a lot of physical skill. And you aren\'t allowed, btw, to use a golf cart during the holes in things like the PGA.
Golf takes strength and accuracy. You could be a kicker in football, and play football without getting tired. How is this any different?
-
ya, how is golf not a sport?
Like Shockwaves said, anyone can play any sport, its just a matter of how good you are. My favourite sport is golf, I play nearly every day.
I think the major problem people have with thinking that golf is not a sport is that you are not playing against someone directly like in hockey or football but you are playing against the course to achieve your best score. But I dont really see how a game with the PGA and Tiger woods in it can not be deamed a sport.
-
The networks are all over it like stink on sh*t Sunday afternoons.
It\'s "stars" are paid increadibly insanely huge selaries
There are videogames based around it.
It has an offical leigue. (PGA)
It\'s a sport.
Suck it.

So cutting the grass is a sport then? that tires the **** out of me.
Have you ever carried your bag for 18 holes of golf? It\'s not an immediate feeling of being tired but by the end of the day you are ready to sleep for 12 hours. Nevermind 4 days back to back in a tournement.
Golf a hobby? No. Collecting stamps or glass figurines? Yes.

I know you aren\'t allowed to use a cart in PGA play, i just threw the cart in there because the people that don\'t play professionally use them.
A kicker in football is completely different than a golfer. When a kicker kicks a field goal, or punts the ball, he has 11 guys trying to block the kick. He has to kick it as high and far as he can. When he\'s kicking a field goal he has to kick it in between goal posts 10 feet apart, and over 20 guys. In golf, they have a fairway to aim for, or maybe a green. With complete silence, no crowd, no people in their face, no nothing. They have all the time they want.

Yes, that might be part of the reason why people don\'t think it\'s a sport, but I also provided other reasons.

And when you\'re playing non professional football, you can\'t take as long as you want between plays?
There is a crowd in PGA play. How is it different trying to kick a ball accurately a long distance, and hitting a ball accurately a long distance. Besides, those people who are trying to get to the kicker rarely get there.
I just find the idea that you would not consider Golf a sport stupid.
sport (spôrt, sprt) n.
a) Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
b) A particular form of this activity.
Does golf not follow this definition?

Cuttin the grass isn\'t a sport, it\'s a chore. I was just comparing baseball and golf by saying baseball is more tiring. Making baseball the more true \'sport\'. I wasn\'t saying everything that makes you tired is a sport.
Yes, I have carried around clubs for 18 holes. But I can say it didn\'t wear me out to the point that i wanted to sleep when i got home.
No, all three of those - hobbies.

When your playing non professional football with friends or whatever you don\'t take time between plays. Everyone lines up then goes out for a pass.
Ok, the guys rarely get there. But still, it has to be pretty hard to kick it accuratly over guys trying to block your kick. In golf, there is silence, and nobody is in your way.
Meh, that\'s what the dictionary says. Sure, it could be classified as a sport, but it isn\'t in my book.
-
Well, then that\'s in your book, and it\'s your problem. It is classified as, and generally known as a sport though.
-
Meh, I\'ll just stick to basketball.
-
Of course golf is a sport. Why would you even think otherwise? Just because it\'s not a bunch of freaks in special outfits? j/k :D
-
I would think Golf is a sport or a hobby. Wouldn\'t it depend on the person playing?
-
Fayded, you have absolutely no clue what you are talking about.
Do you have any clue how tiring it is to play 18 holes walking? It takes several miles to walk a course.
Baseball on the other hand. You go, get into your position and just hang out there until some hits the ball in your general area. Then you run to the ball, throw it, and walk back the somewhere between 10\' and 50\' back to your position.
Golf is definitely a sport. ANyone who says it isn\'t just doesn\'t get the game and that\'s too bad.
Now bowling on the other hand we can debate. hehehe.
-
Golf is a hobby/game. So is basketball. So is football. So is hockey.
Mountain climbing, skateboarding etc are sports

Well, all the times I played a round of 18 I didn\'t feel the need to go home and sleep. But that\'s just me.
In baseball, when the ball gets hit towards you it\'s generally going pretty fast. The infielders have to have a quick reaction time, snag a ball that can take a weird bounce, then make an accurate throw to get the runner out. So it\'s not as easy as you make it sound.
Bowling...i fell once while bowling...
-
Clowd, you just need to go away. You are just getting annoying.
-
Id have to say that any sport(including golf) where competitive activity is present, qualifies it as a sport.

A) You have to go home and sleep after a ball game? Only if it puts you to sleep from boredom.
B) The difference between Tiger\'s swing and Phil Mickelson\'s swing is miniscual, but look at the difference in abilities. Golf is a hell of a sport. Both physical and mental. It takes a hell of a person to be successful in golf. Back before Tiger entered the picture you really didn\'t know who was going to win the tournament. It could be any number of about 20 people. Now you are a total idiot if you don\'t pick Tiger to win a major. Other tournaments are different because he often times uses them to try things in getting ready for different holes in one of the majors. That is the important thing.
C) Were you drunk?
-
Your saying basketball , baseball, hockey and golf arent games?

A) Baseball doesn\'t bore me. Well...it does on TV sometimes...
B) Tiger Woods is too good.
C) No. I went passed the little line, it was slippery on the other side. Yeah.

Sports are games
Games are not necessarily sports. (Monopoly, Connect 4)

How do you classify mountain climbing?

Stop making yourself look more and more retarded the more threads you post in. How old are you anyway?

I agree, it\'s just a freaking hobby. God created the mountains and created people like to climb the created mountains as a hobby.

Of course, thats the difference of sports and games. Games need a league to play in competivly, sports dont have competitive competition.
The question is how old you are for making such a comment. Alot of people agree with what I say. Just because a bunch of 20 something fools dont means nothing.

Um...do you have games and sports mixed up there? Sports will give you some of the best competition...
You can play games with friends and have a good time..

You need help, you have this backwards..sports are what is competitive..games are what\'s for fun.
ALot of ppl agree with what? That just means more uninformed grouped together.
-
Well, Fayded\'s definition of a sport also has the "Team" rule in it.
Golf isn\'t a team sport, but that doesn\'t mean it isn\'t a sport in general, man. Football is a team sport, and a sport. Golf is a sport, but it isn\'t necessarily a team sport.
Case closed, Fayded, you need to look up your reasoning a little more when you go opening your mouth, it\'s starting to become a bad habit with you (Happened with the Lakers, you went on a rant).
See Yuz.
-
Well, yeah you have a point James. Maybe the reason I don\'t consider it a sport is because it doesn\'t have teams.
And about the Lakers, they suck. :D
-
I consider golf as a sport...

OK, I give. I have big log in one ear yelling at me to play and the wifey wanting me to cook steaks. I screwed up. GOD I SUCK!!!!!

no no no, ryder cup is now in the even years and pres. cup is in the odd years due to the 9-11 events, they cancelled the ryder cup because it was in europe, and none of the americans wanted to fly at the time, ryder cup happens every two years, and is much more coveted event, pres. cup no one really pays attention too.
*edit* oops by the way its played in the us and europe it just alternates each time.

How could golf not be a sport? Its competitive and takes skill, hmm that sounds like a lot of other sports. If its competitive and requires some physical skill then its a sport. But yeah everyone else kinda beat me to that so Im gonna stop now.
