Title: Where\'s the *** is the RPGs????
Post by: Paul on June 24, 2002, 08:20:42 AM
I think the PS2 is SERIOUSLY running dry of good(or even crap) RPG titles at the moment. The last good RPG I played on the PS2 was FFX...which also happens to be the first good RPG on the system!!!

I\'ve been waiting for eons for XenoSaga, Grandia Extreme, WildArms 3 and all the other familiar series like Suikoden, Chrono Cross, StarOcean etc etc...but nothing ever happens!!

What is Square doing nowdays?? Wasting all their time doing online games!!!

I just want my RPG the way it\'s supposed to be! If the current trend continues, I don\'t ever see the PS2 becoming the RPG king like the PS1. Currently my PS2 is collecting dust.

Looks like I\'ll have to replay all those great RPG on the PS1 for the next 2 years or so...damn.

Frankly, all the consoles of this generation so far have prove worthless to the traditional RPG fans.

I don\'t ever imagine myself saying this, but currently, the PS2 does SUCKS...big time.

You mean just like any other system out there.

Suikoden III seems to be the RPG I\'ve been waiting for since Skies of Arcadia and I\'m sure that there\'ll be more comming.

The big problem I see so far is: when will they release them in Europe? I don\'t like what they did with FFX, waiting 1 year for a subpar conversion. Ugh.

Meh, I\'m not tired of GTA3 and SmackDown: Just Bring It, yet. I bought Dark Cloud today, it\'s used, but I bought it for $5 from my friend.

But you should all know that the summer time is the worst for games.  Everything runs dead until late august when the sports titles get released.  Just wait until the network adaptor is available.

When you purchased the system, did you really expect a plethora of high quality RPGs to be released every month?  Be honest.

You know RPGs take a lot of time to be developed and translated;  It\'s the way it is, the way it\'s always been, and the way it always will be.  So why complain about it?

There are a ton of RPGs heading to the PS2 later in the future.  If you can\'t wait for them, I suggest that you and any other disgruntled "traditional RPG fans" do one of two things:  Learn to import, or join a local development team and see if you can release the next Final Fantasy before Square can.

Ahhh.. one of the best multiplayer games this Generation goes online.... I\'m going to slaughter you :)

well.. naw maybe not.. bring on TimeSplitters2 and i will :)

Paul, how long did it take for good RPG\'s on PSX to start coming in?  FF7 was out more than 2 years after the PSX was launched.

Kingdom Hearts soon baby  :eyemouth:

Bobs_Hardware: At that time, RPG wasn\'t mainstream yet prior to the release of FF7. With the PS2, SONY should continue with this momentum and not abandon us RPG fans who has made major contribution to PS for it\'s success.

Instead after 2(now 3?) years...all we ever see is one, I repeat ONE RPG worth mentioning. While the tons of me-too games being released by the bucket load.(I don\'t give **** to games like GTA3 - highly overrated if u asked me)

182Ways: I suggest u shut the F*** up. I\'m a customer and I reserve my rights to complain. Import?? Duh, like everyone on the planet can read japanese. U\'re so funny,that it\'s isn\'t even funny anymore.

Well, Paul, you have to understand that the RPG genre isn\'t really mainstream in the US yet (don\'t think it ever will be, actually)... I think the only mainstream series\' seem to be Final Fantasy and Pokemon, but even the sales on those in the US pale in comparison to the sales of say Dragon Quest in Japan.

In the first two years of PlayStation\'s life, you got crap like Beyond the Beyond, and a few gems - like Wild ARMs, King\'s Field, Persona, and Suikoden. The "big name" RPGs didn\'t come until after Final Fantasy 7, and they still took years to come out. Most of the great PSOne RPGs didn\'t hit until 1999 or 2000 -- 4-5 years into the system\'s lifecycle.

So, as far as PlayStation 2 goes... It\'s actually already doing better, and the gained "momentum" as you call it - is plainly noticable. The line-up on PS2 within this first year and a half is already better than the first two years on PlayStation - so what\'s the problem?

And as for the RPGs out now, there\'s:
~~~~~~~
Final Fantasy 10, Okage: Shadow King, Dark Angel: Vampire Apocalypse, Summoner, Eternal Ring, King\'s Field: The Ancient City, Drakan: The Ancients\' Gate, Grandia 2, Warriors of Might & Magic, Legend of Alon D\'ar, Baldur\'s Gate: Dark Alliance, Shadow Hearts, Jade Cocoon 2, Dark Cloud, Ephemeral Fantasia, and Wizardry: Tale of Forsaken Land.
That\'s already 16 RPGs, and at least around 10 of them are "worth mentioning" and definitely worth playing... Maybe even more if you enjoy niche RPGs. :)
You can also count the hybrids like -- Gauntlet: Dark Legacy, The Bouncer, EverGrace, Forever Kingdom, Legion: Legend of Excalibur, Deus-Ex: The Conspiracy, Shifters, etc. if you like... It depends on your definition of RPG really.
And if you\'re worried about the future... Don\'t be. :)
This fall alone is seeing the release of -- Dark Cloud 2, Summoner 2, .hack: Volume 1, Wild ARMs 3, Grandia Xtreme, Kingdom Hearts, Armada 2: Star Command (hybrid), RPG Maker, Suikoden 3, and Legaia: Duel Saga... Almost all of which will be "worth mentioning," so that makes 10 more RPGs worth playing.
And if you want to look even farther ahead... There\'s Final Fantasy XI: Online, Final Fantasy XII (offline), EverQuest: Online Adventures, Star Wars Galaxies, Star Ocean: \'Till the End of Time, Sakura Taisan ports, Tales of Destiny 2, the other three volumes of .hack, Xenosaga (possibly all 6 episodes), Final Fantasy 10: Yuna, Final Fantasy 10: Rikku...
Ya\'know what? I could keep going on and on, and list around 20-30 more... If you don\'t get the point about PS2\'s RPGs, and that they are in fact coming - then I don\'t know what I can say to convince you.
All I\'m saying is give it time... You\'re expecting too much too soon, and you\'re neglecting the around 10 quality RPGs already released on the console. I suggest checking out underrated gems like Shadow Hearts, Wizardry, Okage, Tsugunai, and the like if you\'re really looking for some quality game time.
Hope that helped. :)
Scott: Well, finally a person who talks my language!
Let\'s go through our list:
Final Fantasy 10, Okage: Shadow King, Dark Angel: Vampire Apocalypse, Summoner, Eternal Ring, King\'s Field: The Ancient City, Drakan: The Ancients\' Gate, Grandia 2, Warriors of Might & Magic, Legend of Alon D\'ar, Baldur\'s Gate: Dark Alliance, Shadow Hearts, Jade Cocoon 2, Dark Cloud, Ephemeral Fantasia, and Wizardry: Tale of Forsaken Land.
FF10 - completed, fully satisfied.
Summoner - completed the PC version long ago.
Grandia 2 - completed the DC version eons ago!
BG: DA - completed, good game, but I consider this more like an action game(like Gauntlet) rather than RPG.
Jade Cocoon 2: I hate the first game, rearing monster is not my kinda game.
Shadow Hearts: Have this game...it\'s urrrrggghhh...
Dark Cloud: Just got the game...but it doens\'t seems to be that interesting..
King\'s Field: Nahhh...no thanks.
As for the rest, I think they\'re too PCish for my liking...I\'ve enough of those crap on the PC and some of them has really bad reviews
Of these, I\'m really looking foward to G Xtreme,Suikoden 3 and Legaia, but the freakin wait is just to darn long. And I\'m not holding my breath for the rest furhter down the road  u\'d mentioned coz it\'s bad enough waiting for those up there.
As of now, I\'m forced to play some crappy games like Warcraft 3 on my PC to pass time...
It\'s not nice to keep your customer waiting.
Stop blaming Sony.. they have already made some RPG\'s and are putting some others out.. The rest of them are completely unrelated to Sony  :)
Well Paul, judging from your response to the games out now, it seems like most don\'t appeal to you... Nothing really Sony can do about that, but the RPGs are there - whether you like them or not, that\'s another story. At least you played some of the good ones... ;)
I do suggest Tsugunai though, and Okage to a lesser extent... They\'re niche turn-based RPGs, and are pretty good, IMO. Wizardry is another good title, although it is very PC-ish in styling, it\'s also very old-school and well done - it\'s worth at least a rent, IMO. :)
Well, the three games you mentioned are coming out in September/October, so a few months from now isn\'t too long to wait. I do see your point, though, but hopefully those will keep you busy until spring - then Xenosaga and Star Ocean, and possibly FFXI (if you\'re into MMORPGs) will hopefully keep you busy until next fall when the (I bet) next wave of RPGs comes out.
It is hard to play the waiting game, but you could also pick up a GBA for RPGs like Phantasy Star Collection, Megaman Battle Network 2, the new Castlevania, etc to help fill the void. :)
SquareSoft announced that they were developing two side-stories to FFX (using FFX\'s game engine), and they just temporarily dubbed them "Yuna" and "Rikku."
When they come out, I have no idea... But I\'m willing to bet they\'ll get localized.
I agree with everything you said except that. Ever since FF7, RPG\'s have only been getting more and more popular. Unfortunately, most players are content enough with  mainstream titles like Final Fantasy, and they tend to ignore great, but lesser known titles like Persona 1&2, or Suikoden. ;)
I never hear anyone talk about Xenogears.  That story was most likely the best i have and will ever play!
I have that. Played through it 5 times before I actually understood the story fully. I talk about it everynow and then, as its easily one of the best RPG\'s ever. :)
Well, I won\'t deny RPGs have gotten more popular... I just really don\'t see the genre as mainstream yet, minus a few key titles.
And, on another note -- I\'m willing to bet if the "future of RPGs" lies in MMORPGs, like some developers are saying, that the genre will receive quite a kink... With much more hefty entry fees, time requirements, etc -- I think it\'ll be a step back for the genre, instead of a step forward, in terms of mainstream acceptance.
That\'s all just IMO, though.
Agreed. Online RPG\'s will only hurt the genre. :(
Yeah, Persona 1 & 2 are pretty good games. Too bad my PS1 broke down completely before I can finish Persona 2 and now my PS2 is already half dead.
Oh well, hopefully I can hold off a few more months before turning crazy....or join the Dark Side with Microsoft...hee-hee.
Personally, I\'ve no wish to play online RPG. Call me what u will but I find that the problem with multiplayer game is it\'s just a waste of hack and slash time with no story because it\'s impossible to drive a good story in such an environment.
When u play a traditional single player RPG like FFX, XenoSaga, Suikoden etc etc..you\'re drawn into the story, the adventure and you are every part of the story making an incredible immersion.
This kind of experience is just not achievable in an online game.
If that is the only good RPG you\'ve played on the system I suggest you pick up Okage and Shadow Hearts. Also try getting some PSX RPGs that you\'ve never played. Since, ofcoarse, you want good games graphics shouldnt matter. Get Grandia FF7,8 (it was okish), and 9,Sukioden 1&2. Also another good RPG on PS2 is Dark Cloud I loved the game.
I might give Okage a try. Shadow Hearts is crap though.
