Title: Sega have seen the light.
Post by: MAKAVELIUK on June 27, 2002, 12:50:55 PM
and are supporting the PS2 most

At a stockholder\'s meeting today, Sega revealed their software strategy for the next year and commented on a number of topics. Due to be released this year are 42 games for PlayStation 2, 15 for Xbox, 20 for GameCube, and 12 for Game Boy Advance. No titles were mentioned for PC, but Sega said it was still an important platform for them.

In the question-and-answer session afterward, Sega reiterated that they would not be developing any new Dreamcast games, although there are still a few Dream Collection rereleases of hit games for the system, and a few third parties still had games in development.

Interestingly, they also mentioned that the most important market for them is North America. Such was their reasoning when asked why they continued to support the Xbox, which has a weak following in Japan but stronger support in North America.

In Phantasy Star Online related news, they mentioned that the lack of a fee collection system was one of the reasons why the PlayStation 2 wouldn\'t be getting a version of Sonic Team\'s hit online RPG. Sega also announced that a version of the game for release in China was in the works, though they were unsure of which platform it would be for.

Chrono may stop, but this will only promote more whining from Altered Beast.

I\'m (somewhat) in agreement with fastson.

Simply because Sega is releasing more games on the PS2 does not ensure any quality.  They may be a renowned company, but they\'re far from being perfect.  They\'re capable of releasing trash, too.

But it is always nice to see support for the PS2.  The more games, the merrier, I say.

Yes, I agree Ryu...PS2 support is very nice...considering Microsoft is buying out companies like crazy with their heavy wallets. It\'s getting quite old.

I don\'t think it is thanks to games like NFL2K2, NBA2K2, WSB2K2, PSO and of course Sonic. Just with those 5 games I’m happy. Sega has put a lot of effort in their sports series and they really show a lot of improvement from their past titles (Sega Sports titles from the Saturn really were not good at all. The only good title was WSB). Besides Sega has already experience in online playing and I think that will help the PS2 in the battle to win this market. That\'s why I\'m happy of Sega supporting the PS2.

They are buying out people? Who? What have I missed?

Honestly, I would take this Sega support with a grain of salt. Have you seen some of their "support"? How about a port of Virtua Cop 2? Yeah, that is what they are "supporting" the PS2 with...

Quanity does not equal quality, folks.

There are a couple things I find interesting with this quote...
1.  Does this mean that Nintendo is also planning a pay-per-play service?  I didn\'t know Nintendo even had an online plan yet.  When is FSO due for release, late 2003? ;)

2.  How does Microsoft\'s Xbox Live payment method make the Xbox more desirable than the PS2?  Doesn\'t all money paid through Xbox Live go straight to Microsoft?  And aren\'t the companies who charge additional fees for their games required to have seperate servers and their own payment methods?  I guess there\'s a lot of details about Xbox Live that I don\'t understand.

Exactly.  The only game that I can think of that was displayed by Sega at E3 was Shinobi.  If the PS2 is getting 40+ games this year from Sega, why weren\'t there more at E3?  My guess is because they are all crappy ports of really old games that didn\'t sell well on the Dreamcast.  Um, woohoo?  I can\'t wait for Seaman.

Ironfist - that quote is complete bullshyt. The Dreamcast dosen\'t have a collection systems set up. The Xbox PSO isn\'t going to use Microsoft\'s XboxLive collection system. Nintnedo dosen\'t have any solid online plans.. let along a collection system. Let\'s not forget the PC version, which also dosen\'t have a solid collection system.

It\'s a BS move, an excuse.. a diversion. From what, for what.. I don\'t know. But I do know that using the ISAO and Dricas websites would work just as well for a PS2 version as it does for every other version of PSO.

The only way that statement could fool anyone is if they had absolutely no experience playin PSO v.2 and dealing with buying a Hunter Licence.

IronFist: U r probably rite about 40+ games from SEGA. anyone care for Daytona USA : Championship Deluxe Special Double Cheessy Edition??? LOL.

If they start making NEW games like Panzer Dragoon X to the PS2, then it\'s a different story.

Got $50 bucks there Ironfist?? :D

On a side note: I gotta defend that game. People complain about the videogame market not having enough originality and innovation.. and when a game like Seaman comes along and truely does innovate.. everyone bashes it. WTF? They can\'t all include blood, boobs, and guns. There\'s more to gaming than jus what\'s in front of our eyes.. but unfortunately, that\'s all we\'re gonna get if people don\'t embrace the new innovations that come along.

And really, calling Seaman a game isn\'t even exactly accurate. It\'s more like software.. a simulation, but much more. I think its at least worth a try, and could really bring a whole of new gamers who are into this thing into the game market. Did you realize that in Japan (at least), 40% of all Seaman purchasers were Female.. and around 60% of the people who bought and played it.. weren\'t even videogamers.

I think games like Seaman are good for the industry, and can only help it grow. If that\'s not what you\'re looking for, then that\'s cool. But try it before knocking it.
