Post by: Titan on June 27, 2002, 03:33:04 PM: I want to get one. We saw them in Bio class (well, a lot of video\'s). They friggin rock. I also want to get a sun dew. Watch the flies and bugs get stuck and slowly digested :facelick:

Post by: Titan on June 27, 2002, 03:43:20 PM: After a Venus fly trap eats a bug, new traps spawn up. Each trap is only used about 3-5 times. Not a long life. But new ones spawn up for each fly eaten.

Post by: GmanJoe on June 28, 2002, 04:41:02 AM: I used to have one too. Actually, I had about 80 mouths of traps in one pot. First, it started out as 4 traps....then as it kept eating, it got more and more mouths. I had to move it to a large pot and get top soil and a lot of moss on top of it. Then I replanted the Venus Fly traps there.

And WOW! I left the thing in the backyard and a month later, the pot was FULL of Venus Fly traps! I\'m talking about 1 and 1/2 inch long mouths! They were huge and yellow-jackets and flys were the prime victims! I\'d leave a piece of meat in the pot to attract more flys and about 3 hours later, half the mouths would be closed - probably a fly in each one!

Unfortunately, bumble bees were also attracted. That wasn\'t good for my plants. Eventually, after a few years, I gave up on these vermins and let them dry up and die.

The "mouths" will seal itself like plastic. Once it\'s "sealed", the mouth fills up with digestive juices and drowns the insect. It takes about 4 days for it to open again. Sometimes longer with ground beef

DO NOT EVER PUT IN SEASONED MEATS! It will kill the mouth.

Carnivorous plants live in like swamps where there is no nitrogen. The plant eats bugs as a way of getting nitrogen that is usable. So when the plant catches a bug, it releases digestive enzymes that break down the bug and uses its nutrients. In the case of the Venus fly trap, for each bug caught, more traps spawn :D
