Title: Socom - demo impressions
Post by: Shining_knuckle on June 28, 2002, 01:49:04 AM
Hey guys.
I finally played the Demo for Socom - US navy seals,so, here are my impressions.

First off, the graphics caught my eye..the intro sequence looked REALLY smooth, and you could notice a lot of details even though it was all snow.
The way they did the graphics, how the horizon faded and how far you could see was perfectly done.
So, you couldnt easily kill enemies from afar, but not so bad that you would die without spotting the enemy.

The mission in the demo is set in Alaska, a snowy mountain place, with cabins and trees scattered throughout the area.
You have a mission, like in this case, retreiving a laptop before the terrorists erase the info on it, and that mission is split into smaller missions so you dont get lost, such as securing a cabin, rescuing someone. Its all very nicely done...you can go your own way, or follow the path they give you to the dot.

Skill wise, Its kinda hard, i\'m still trying to beat the first mission, and get used to the controls.
The thing that caught my eye the most about this game is that you could switch out between the 1st and third person views, and still play the game without feeling as if you\'re missing out on something cause of the view you\'re in.

Theres no headset yet, so it was kinda annoying to order around the rest of the team.

The first mission is prettyhey, cool..you get like , the MGS feel at some points when sneaking around, then it changes suddenly..Its just really fun.

Woah, thats a lot of typing..but, yea..anyone else who played the demo post your impressions also

Thanks for the impressions..

Ive only read good things about this game, so I cant wait to try it out.

I like the stealthy part of the game, I hope it will work the same way in multiplayer so it doesnt turn out like Quake.

Does anyone know the releasedate for Europe? I saw 1st of August somewhere.

During my whole time Beta testing I never had a snowy level...:( Always got assigned to dessert or jungle. Eh. No matter, I still sucked at it:p

Thank you for your inpressions, two questions though, where did you get the demo and CygnusXI, how did you become a beta tester?

Members of Playstation Underground were sent an email asking if they wanted to sign up for Beta testing, filled out a survey. They picked from the entries, I was one.

It\'s been over now for about a month, but us testers will get a free Network adaptor and online demos :) for our "hard work".

July issue of PSM has a write up on the online deal and there\'s a piece in their by Agent: CygnusXI-- aka me.

Did the beta for this aswell, funnily enough it gave me a slight bit of motion sickness due to the way the controls are set up(yes I know you can change the control setup). But default is very bad.
I have to disagree about the graphics which I thought were actually very standard as was the intro. Ordering the bravo team around is fun up to a point, but then quickly fades to disapointment but again this is due to no head set and having to command via the menu. Didnt like having to start the mission all over again when u die, ie no save point, but then it is only a demo. The radar(top right) is pretty good, but sometimes due to the background you cant see the alphabetised assignments. Good
quick weapon changes controled by the L1 & L2 buttons. Forced reload by the right analogue stick.
IMHO as a one player offline game, it will get very old very quickly,
but I can see with the added enjoyment of the headset and online multiplayer capabilites that it could go far. One thing I had noted though......................when it does hit online, frame rate will drop to 30 fps, which will suck bigtime.

I got the demo from a friend at EB.
I\'ve heard they have demos set up at a lot of the game stores, such as EB, babages, etc.. So go to your local game store and see if they have it. Also, ask them for it, someone nice might give it to you, cause they got extra copies.

I didnt have a problem with the controls at all, now that i\'m used to them.
Commanding the team, like i said, is kinda annoying without the headset, because you kind of have to stop and go to the menu, but with the headset, its gonna be a blast, i\'m sure.
oddly enough, I still havent beat the demo, but i shall soon.
IMO, the graphics are above the normal, I mean, they\'re not extraordinary like Zoe, but they were still better then the regular PS2 games.
Either way, This just makes me want the final version even more..I cant wait.

Definetly good.
I dont think i\'ve seen any posts with people actually not liking the game..Its really gonna live up to all the hype, it has the makings of something that\'ll be around for a long time.

Yes it is very good.  I played it for 45 minutes at my local gamestop :)  Very very nice, everything felt normal to me.  Very in depth.

THIS IS BULL****   I showed up at my local Gamestop and they told me none of their stores would have the demo and that theres no such demo.  He tried to make me feel stupid.  I should have planted my foot in his ass.

That\'s right Boz.. You should\'a showed him who\'s boss. lol

I don\'t think you can play it in stores or buy it... I thought only "special" tester people can play it.

Anyways. This is the one game I can\'t wait to get my hands on... That is.. For the single player experience only, cause I don\'t have BB.:(

No BB here either but I\'m still getting it for the offline mode. I think it looks cool and the headset it a major plus for me.

Th motion sickness worries me. I get it with MOH underground which makesit impossible to play. Only game it happens to me though.

Also the analogue keeps pausing the game in undergorund every 2 secs

I know that the game retails for $60, but it\'s only money and I can make more. This game will be mine within a week of launch.

Motion sickness isnt too bad, but I will not play a game if it makes me ill, no matter how good it is.

I\'ve heard a lot of people talk about motion sickness with MOHFrontline so I would say its the worst case scenerio for a game.

Yeah, THAT\'S how REALISTIC the game is!!!  Even in the very beginning one of the on screen soldiers vomits from motion sickness.  When I started playing, I vomited right along with my fellow men... all over my controller while thinking "YEAH, THIS IS WHAT WAR IS ALL ABOUT!!!"  Now I just wish I could feel the STING of a HOT BULLET!!!... now THAT\'S some AWESOME gameplay!!!!!

uh, .......  the graphics are good too....

LoL, Bozco, you should have yelled at him..ofcourse theres a demo..i think people are selling them on ebay..
Infact, show him a picture and make him feel really really stupid.

Wow, motion sickness? thats crazy..I dont think SOCOM should give you that problem, but like someone said..no matter how good a game is, if it makes you ill, dont play it.
Also, for those of you who dont have broadband.. you know that you can still play other games online, not SOCOM though.
I think the network adapter supports 56k ...I\'ll have to check up on it.

The network adapter does support both BB and dial up but I\'m still waiting on a good game that uses dial up. All the games that are coming out by the end of the year that support dial up are no games I want. I might be able to get BB next month as someone is finally putting it in my area.

Hey?  I only know of SOCOM that is BB only.. TimeSplitters 2, Twisted Metal, Madden etc. should all run on 56k.

Yeah, but theres still the question of how good they will work online.
Atleast with SOCOM, we know theres not gonna be any problems enjoying it..I\'m still doubting 56k online gaming though, specially after DC.
Guess time will tell..But honestly, I dont see 56k being used for online games other then tetris, or something.
