Apparently this message board has a ban on roofing, but no problem talking about other trivial crap.
Before Soulgrind locks yet another thread, could someone who has dealt with putting on a new roof give me any advice.
I have a guy coming on Saturday to check it out and I know I am going to be raped, but I just don\'t want it to hurt.
kind of like going to a used car salesman.
I have 3 tab shingles and I am thinking about going with directional shingles. How much should I expect to pay extra per square?
ANy other advice would be greatly appreciated.
I would have asked this in my other thread, but of course I never had a chance.

we just had our house re-roofed last month, actually
i dont know any specifics about shingle size/type
but i do know it cost us $2000

$2000? That\'s not much for a new roof I believe (not that I\'m an expert on the subject or anything, but I think it can cost WAY more).
-
oh, im sure it could
i only have a split level ranch style house
but still 2g\'s is a lot of cheese to give away
-
Had mine done in 99.. Cost about 6500. Insurance paid for it (YES! ).
My house is about 1500 square feet, and I have a dormer off the back end, just to give you an idea. BUT I also have found that Minnesota has higher than average prices on service jobs (painting, roofing, contract work). I don\'t know why.
-
2,000?? How big a house? 500 square feet? I was expecting more along the 5 grand area.
I have 6 companies called now. I\'m guessing that should be enough to give me a solid ball park figure.
I have 4 spots now in Logan\'s room. UGH!@!!! F\'n rain. I guess it\'s better than my house being on fire though in Arizona.
Hopefully it won\'t rain today. I think I found where a leak is coming in but I have to get up there and do it. I need the insulation to dry before I start getting mildew up there.
Our house is 1700 square feet single level with 2 car garage.

Finished Living Area: 1414 Square Foot (not very accurate)
there is a two story addidtion behind the house that you cant see from the pic
we built that porch by hand too

As a Floridian I must ask, "What the heck is wrong with your lawn?" "Is that some white fungus?"
2 grand for that roof? Hmmm. Well it\' a pretty easy roof since there are only 2 valleys. I dunno. That seems awfully cheep. I hope to have good luck with the price. We\'ll see.
Lona just called me and said there were two more spots on our ceiling. All in the same line. So apparently one piece of insulation is soaked. Ugh.. Hopefully it won\'t rain today.
-
mm, what state do you live in? It depends on the state which depends on the price. A larger population has a higher price. Lower has a lower price (actually, I don\'t know what I\'m talking about).
We had our old house shingled from slate a few years back. I don\'t remember what the final price was. Anywhere from 2-5 grand.

BAH!
Any self-respecting man should be able to put a new roof on himself...
vid- I suggest you follow these steps:
1: check pants for penis
2: put your own roof on & save $$$
3: buy broodwar.
4: get some poonanni.
;)
CLOSE THIS THREAD IT\'S NOTHING BUT SPAM!

You obviously don\'t live in Fl in the summer. That\'s why I make money. I pay people to do the crap I would never in a million years want to do. Although I do have an air compressor and my dad has a roofing gun.
I\'ll just go into debt. Unless you bastards want to help me with a ten dollar donation.

lol
/check pants for penis

Here in Jersey, everything is expensive.

You don\'t owe me a darn thing.. I\'m guessing you got it working. I gave it to another buddy the other day and he got it working so I figured you could figure it out eventually.
PS: If you want that to be your job I could possibly hook you up here where I do my editing. They are looking for some one right now.

Video goto askme.com and ask a roofing expert I hate that site but it has its purposes

wow, that would be my dream come true. I have to admit that I\'m just a hack at this stage. Maybe in a year or so I\'ll get confident enough to consider quitting my $40k job (plus health insurance & 401k) to commit to such a change. I\'m still learning all the time, and my skills are improving.

I know it\'s just my weird perspective being a westerner, but that house looks like a house where a serial killer lives. Or... that kid from the movie "A Christmas Story." You know..., ragged leafless tree in the background, patches of snow on the ground, rusty screen door. I always imagined Jeffrey Dahmer lived in a house like that, and kept his trophies in the basement. :) We don\'t have ANY houses like that in California or Arizona. Our serial killers live in bungalows or apartment complexes. :D

Well I\'m half way there to hunting down that sick bastard mm.:D

OK, I\'ve figured it out!!!
All of you who were planning on seeing Mr. Deeds, DON\'T!!!
Send me the 20 bucks you were going to waste on this awful movie instead!!
I just watched the thing and I laughed once. I think it may have been out of pity though.
Getting 5 estimates tomorrow. Hopefully I will get MM\'s roofing company to come to FL.
-
This is off the subject, but mm my sister lived in Crafton, PA for a bit. I looooooved Pittsburg

OK, get this. I got one bid of 3900 bucks. I thought that was pretty good and the guy was real nice. Large company so I know they have the man power to rip this sucker out in a couple days.
Then another guy comes over. He tells me I should just put new shingles over my old one cause it\'s cheaper. I already knew I could do this, but I didn\'t want to cause I had a leak. Anyway he said it could save me 1600 bucks so it\'s worth an estimate. He did an estimate both ways, one where he stripped the old shingles one without. He actually wanted 7200 bucks to reshingle and 5600 to just put shingles over the old ones.
How the Fizuck could he be so much more expensive? My neighbor had a bid on his house for 3900 as well from another person so I think the 3900 guy that bid my house was right.
Dude, did this 7200 guy really think I was going to use him?
He went on and on about how they may cost more, but it\'s because they have real good insurance. Um, I don\'t give a crap if you have real good insurance. The other dudes had insurance as well.
I just hate it when people try to rip people off. Another guy comes tomorrow. Interesting to see what he says. I\'m just floored at the dramatic difference in doing the same exact job.
-
Its good that you found someone that will do it cheap.
-
Well speaking as a former roofer I can tell you 7200 dollars is outrageous for a home your size. And as far as only reshingling I would\'nt suggest it as you have already had a leek so there is definantly some wood damage that will only get worse even if it is covered over.
If you really need to save money tho their is an alternative called flintlastic.It\'s really no more than a roll of shingle material just like the roofing paper under the shingles, but in my opinion it\'s quite ugly and only a last resort .
The first guy you were talking about seems like your best bet right now.But you should\'nt expect a quick roof on your house due to this being the"season" for roofs.Probably a 3 week wait.
Most important of all. They say they are licenced, check it out. They say their insured, check it out.Just don\'t want to see you get burned.Good luck.
-
Yeah, they are a large company. 14 crews. I like them. I\'m not worried about the cash. I want it done right. I feel like calling that bastard who tried to charge me double the rest and tell him to shove it up his ass.
That is so ridiculous. A guy came today and laughed when I told him. He measured out 30 squares. The guy who charged me a lot more said 40 squares. The guy today asked me if the guy even looked at the job when he quoted 40 squares cause that was ridiculous.
Very odd.
Looks like I\'ll have a new roof within 3 weeks. Yahoo!
-
Vid, jus do yourself a BIG favor before hand. Photograph EVERYTHING.. before and after. Sometimes, even tho these guys cut you a good deal, they\'ll end up f*cking you anyway they can. A few years back we had this guy name Mike Eggloff come out to put a roof on our house. Cost about 4 G\'s all together, but he wasn\'t just tearing shingles off either.
Anyhow, the extension ladders they used to get on the room didn\'t have eve guards, so our guttering got all torn to shyt in like 6 different areas. He offered to replace it, but it would cost extra. (A LOT extra, it turns out). They also managed to break off a stink pipe (It\'s an old house) which they wouldn\'t replace, and actually thought they could get away with sticking a cheap piece of tin foil around the Chimney for flashing (or whatever it is that keeps water from running down the outside of the chimney into the house). After alot of bad noise, we did finally get him to replace the flashing and do the job right although he thought since he had to do it twice that he should get paid twice. There was alot of other things too.. there\'s huge cracks in the plaster at alot of places in the house because they\'d litterally just throw 50 - 100 lb bricks of shingles around carelessly. In a newer house, that wouldn\'t be a problem.. but my house is over 100 years old and it\'s foundation is pretty well past it\'s prime.
Anyhow, I\'m sure you already know, don\'t pay them nothing upfront except what they need for materials. That way, if they damage your house you\'ve still got some bargaining chips.. well.. as long as you remember to document everything so you can use it in court if you have to.
-
Actually they want nothing up front. They said they would bill me about 3 days after the work is complete.
Good idea on photgraphing stuff. I don\'t have gutter though so when they lean the ladders up against the edge, they are leaning it up against stuff they are replacing anyway.
