Title: Memory Card Problem
Post by: Speed Demon on June 28, 2002, 04:23:08 PM
A second memory card crapped out on me this weekend! That\'s 2 in the past 2 months! Am I just unlucky or could my PS2 be defective? Does turning off with the switch at the back mess up the cards? I did that a few times by accident...

Well for one make sure you always use the Sony brand ones.  I trust them by far over the others.  And if you turn off your system while saving that messes things up.

What version of the PS2 do you have, the 1st and 2nd ones are defective.  You can check by reading one of the numbers on the back, it will be something like 100089 or something if you have a version 1, version to would be something like 200089 etc.

Is there any other number on the back of ur ps2....hold on im checking mine.  No that isnt it.  It is on the top left of the back of the PS2, it is the model number.  Mine is SCHP-30001 that means i have version 3.

Well then perhaps you just got screwed with your memory cards.  They are Sony\'s brand right?

My first one was Gameshark I think and then I went to an official one when my first screwed up. I leave them in my PS2 all the time, is that alright to do?

Yes, as long as it is in stand-by and you plan on playing it again in a while.  It would be better to shut it off if you knew that you\'d be done for the day.

one way that a problem like this might be caused is when you take out the mem. card while playing a game (not neccssarily when your saving) and another thing is using unofficial mem. cards they tend to screw up alot.

^ That might be my source of troubles. I have taken the cards out during play and I have only bought Gameshark ones. I thought I got an official Sony one last time but I was wrong.

I\'ve always put in my memory cards after powering on, and removed them before powering off. I\'ve been doing this for years, as the PS1 had problems where the card could fall victim to the power surge. Its become force of habit now, but I don\'t know if PS2 has the problem. You could always try. :)

I just leave mine in when I am not useing it, but then again I unplug it because of limited jacks.
