I was just thinking of this the other day and I came to a conclusion that Sony is now my favorite developer.
Now back in the old days of PSone I completely hated there games ( cough: cough: 989 games). But now with PS2 they have really been making some top-notch great games. With Psone I think I only had two Sony games, GT1, GT2. But now I\'ve been getting every game they make upon release.
So, I decided to put a list together to show how many great games they have put out and will put out.
Gran Turismo : Best racing franchise ever, IMO.
The Getaway : Has serious potential to be GOTY
ICO : This game really surprised me especially comming from Sony.
Jak and Daxter : Two classic characters and one classic game.
Socom : Not really into that type of thing but looks cool.
Twisted Metal : Back in Black was one hell of a way to bring the series out of the grave, and has now set the standard
Sly Cooper : Looks very interesting and fun, mixing MGS and platforming is pure genious
Parappa the Rappa : I always loved this type of game
Ratchet and Clank : Looks amazing and should set a standard for the genre
Primal : One of my most wanted games of the year.
The Mark of Kri Also very innovative, looks very promising according to EGM.
See, most of these are new franchises to, Sony just doesn\'t keep bringing back the same old games over and over. More than half of the games on that list a completely new franchises for PS2. And they still manage to keep the old ones (GT) new with every new instalment. In close second comes Konami as my favorite developer.
What is your current developer of choice and why?
-
Sega
Sonic, NiGHTS, Panzer Dragoon, Virtua Fighter, House of the Dead, Crazy Taxi, Skies of Arcadia, Space Channel 5, Samba De Amigo, Shenmue, Phantasy Star, Sega GT, 2K series, Chu Chu Rocket...
While they seem to be churning out nothing buy sequels lately, I\'m still a big fan from yesteryear. Originality, innovation, and quality have always been a factor in Sega.
-
Yeah Sony tops my list along with Square, Namco and Capcom :)
Sony has really got their act together brining us AAA games.
Right now I think Sony has a better 1st/2nd party lineup than Nintendo (please dont kill me ;)).
Sony is becoming bigger and bigger.. Btw, their Game division has made major profit this year (even bigger than their Film division) so Sony is investing even more money.. Woho! :D
-
Don\'t forget Syphon Filter. Thats a quality series from Sony. It needs a PS2 update.
-
The only Sega game I own is Virtua Fighter and I pick Tekken over that. But now that Shinobi is comming out I might change my mind out Sega.
And I agree fastson, Sony does look like to have the best first party line-up this gen, with Nintendo in close second, as for Microsoft I don\'t like a single title they are making :eek:.
Yeah I just loved the first Syhon Filter the explosion thing was wierd though. I never played the last two but a PS2 update might bring me back in the Filter fun :D .
-
I\'m not impressed with MS\'s first party efforts either...I\'m curious about a few though. Same with Sony, most of their efforts were medicore but it seems they have raised some standards. It\'s all for the better...I expect good things to come.
Nintendo comes in a really close second for me...but it\'s also considering Rare\'s games.
Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Banjo, Perfect Dark, Eternal Darkness, Donkey Kong...classics and of the most quality.

My favorite developer is still pre-1998 Sierra. Back before the Oakhurst incident, and around the time Ken Williams was still in charge. Since that company is long dead, I\'ve been seekin out and playing games made by ex-Sierra designers and programmers. Most of em are retired now, but they\'re still my favorite.
Sega\'s next up in my fav list. Ginko\'s right.. I\'m dissapointed that they\'ve been turning out almost nothing but sequels and rehashes lately. Some updates to older franchises I don\'t mind.. since the generation gaps leave lots of room for not only grpahical, but game play innovations as well.. but come on, 3 Crazy Taxi\'s? PSO v.2? and not to mention all those streight (BARELY enhanced if at all) ports? Ecco, Seaman, Headhunter, Shenmue, Rez, SA2:B...
They haven\'t made an entirely great impression going into it this generation. Tho I\'m sure they\'ll get back up on their feet soon. Least.. I hope so. I\'d hate for them to turn into another EA or Post 1998 Sierra. = /
-
Castle of Dr. Brain...was that a Sierra game? I have fond memories of it...

Sorry but what games have Sierra made? The name sounds familiar but I think of anything.
About Sega you guys are right, to many sequals :( .
-
Favorite developer? Well, for consoles.. easily Nintendo.
I\'d tend to agree that Sony is getting better.. but let\'s see if they can keep it up. I think they will.
-
Most from your list aren\'t out yet so I\'m not sure you can really talk about how good they are going to be. It\'s all hype and means nothing.
Sega, Capcom and Nintendo are know quantities, and have been producing quality for sometime now. There is no comparison.
-
Yes GAMES so is having a long streak of good games coming. I agree with you.:)
-
Tom G - Yes, it is. I have it. Parts 1 and 2. Was designed by one of my favorite game makers actually. :)
GAMES - They\'re mostly famous for their Adventure games. King\'s Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest, Quest for Glory. All of those series have anywhere from 5 to 8 sequels, cept for Police Quest which was transformed into the SWAT series. They also did Slipheed, LodeRunner, Gobliiins, A10 Tank Killer, Ect.

I\'m just guessing here, but I\'m assuming GAMES that you really havent played many Sega games? Get a dreamcast and saturn and catch up with the times.
And yes im extremely happy with what \'Sony\' has put out as far as games go recently. And their future releases have huge hype behind them and are sure to be.. at the very least average, at the most, brilliant.
You have also left out a lot of online titles Sony are working on (i.e. Twisted Metal Online, 969 Sports titles etc. etc.), and many unnanounced titles that are in the works.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Square are my favorite developers. If only they released all their games down here
*makes puppy dog face until someone sends me their copies of Xenogears, Einhander, Final Fantasy Tactics and Chrono Cross*
I guess I could go looking for a Dreamcast because I have been hearing nothing but good things about it\'s games lately now that the system is dead, but I still don\'t know. As for Saturn, I haven\'t seen one of those in about 3 years, so there\'s no way I could play those games if I wanted to.
The reason I left out the online titles like TM and 989 sports titles is because I only listed games that I am looking forward. :D
Sega - They are the kings of changing the industry, for better or worse. They can blaze a trail like no one else and still come out with the best product. They are making tons of sequels now, but I think they may be doing that to get back into profitability for a little while. The original content is coming. Besides some of these "sequels" haven\'t seen a game in their series for years.
Capcom - kings of rehash, kings of quality. They rehash so much because they are constantly tweaking their games. Also, they still make the best fighting games.
Old Konami - back in the old days with their "Ultra" team, they made some truly memorable titles. Now, alot of their games fail to impress me.
Tee hee, thats prolly true though ;) :D
No offense faston but I think you should be banned from console debate. You never bring up good points and your view is completely one sided.
-
Bozco,
uhh.. exactly what is he doing wrong?
Altered has always been that way, everybody (with the exception of a few) pokes fun at him.
Yes, fastson can be one-sided as well as myself (although after buying the lunchbox, thats changing).
He does bring up good points
That really hurt :(
I never bring up good points? Huh? Have you read any of the debates Ive been in? Do some searchin my friend.
I\'m not trying to be mean and I think your a pretty cool guy but you lean heavily towards Sony. And it seems like all you do is laugh at the other consoles. Maybe I\'m wrong but thats how I see it.
-
Let\'s not forget 3DO for their fantastic army men games!:laughing:
What else is new? ;)
Btw, I dont try to hide it like some other people.
Party true, I laugh at a certain something whenever someone posts salescharts :D
But Im actually planning on getting a GC in the future (mebbe after xmas).
-
No you idiots. I own a PS2 and have had 3 Playstations, why would I stop liking their games because they make them on a console I own and actively play? :rolleyes:
They just don\'t have that Contra or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feel anymore. They take themselves too seriously and end up with some convoluted plot that really takes away from the gameplay that could be more of. IMO, They were best on NES, made by a company I have less respect of, Nintendo. SO shut tyhe fuck up with this stupid black/white crap. Not everything has to be about the "Console Wars" you idiots. Look at my most memorable games of the 32Bit era, half are on PSX, hell some are made by Sony.
You guys never fail to amuse me.
I think a bit too many people are confusing Altered\'s case of terminal nostalgia with an Anti-Sony bias. I think if you actually look closely at what he has to say, he\'s not doggin Sony.. he\'s dogging the state of the industry and wishing that it would go back to how it used to be. And he may not see it either, but he does have a bit of a anti-Sony bias.. because they are seen as the ones who caused a major change in the game market. And rightly so.. tho I think this was a long time comming. It\'s apperant if you look at the PC market, that it\'s been in the works since before Sony came along.. they were just a catalyst for the console market\'s change.
Anyhow, that\'s how I see it. I feel the same way too sorta, but I\'ve jus given up hope. :D
BTW, we got more smilies I see. w00t! :nut: :hold: :boom: :snore:
-
Yes, I would agree with sonyfan
Good words :)
-
Bozco, do you think everyone who is biased should be banned from this section? That would be pretty ironic, especially considering this is a PSX(2) forum (hope I\'m not wrong on this one) and I hardly know anyone who is NOT biased at all.
As for the topic though, I must agree that Sony has come a long way. Their lineup for this year tops them all IMO. :)
-
Well, their is biased, and their is faston.
-
You agree with SOnyFan, yet you mock me, although his post was clarifying my point of view of the industry, and correctly, might I add.
The industry sucks nowadays. The only company who seems like they are still in it for the pure fun of games anymore is Nintendo, and I have still have a strong bad taste in my mouth from the shafting they gave me with N64. Everyone else, even my dear old Sega, seem to be buying up everyone and selling out to the highest bidder. Perhaps this is why my Saturn, Master System, and Gameboy are constantly on and my PS2 and XBox have an inch of dust on it.
I agree with Altered, the last console game by Konami that I enjoyed was Shadows of Destiny and before that it was CastleVania: SOTN . Anything else in my opinion has been crap. NOte that I am not including their handheld games which they still have a good touch for .
-
You mean their great handheld games like YuGiOh? or great games like Frogger?
On whole the company has gone down the toilet in quality, along with many other publishers. They do produce some quality games every year, but nothing to match the 8Bot/16bit years.
Needless to say, I am waiting for C:HoD, because it is one of the few things they have left that actually interest me.
I know, I was just messing with you Clip. I am excited for Castlevania games as much as the next jaded old-school gamer. It is the only piece of \'Old Konami\' I have left.
Eric Jacob
-
While we\'re talking about old school, I never thought Altered Beast was a terribly good game. Why do you love it so much that you chose it for your nick?
-
Every game is a great game when you are 6. I used to play this, Rastan, and R-Type all the time when I was young on my Sega Master System, good games or not, those games and their soundtracks are forever planted in my mind.
AlteredBeast was great for what it was, a tough beatem up with awesome morphing.
"Power Up!"
Eric Jacob
-
I wasn\'t much older at that time, but I can confess to loving r-type and rastan.
-
I still love playing Altered Beast (although through the aid of an Emulator).. i still think its pretty hard.. and oh so satisfying when you power up :D
-
I finished Altered Beast on Christmas day, only hours after opening it. It couldn\'t have been that hard.
-
It was extremely short yes... but i find it hard.. :shy: .. I dunno ive always been retarded at that game :)
-
I simply just noticed, the inappropriate word usage in the title of this thread.
-
The Genesis version of AB was nowhere near as hard as the arcade version.
-
That\'s true, teh arcade version was tougher.
lol, so did I.. I was hoping the author would notice it but aparently he did not
