Warner Bros. plans \'Superman vs. Batman\' movie

Published 7:55 p.m. PDT Tuesday, July 9, 2002
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Maybe the Man of Steel is fighting with the Caped Crusader over top billing?

Warner Bros. announced production plans Tuesday for the warring superhero film "Batman vs. Superman," which would pit the two DC Comics characters in a "battle of the titans," according to director Wolfgang Petersen.

"They play off of each other so perfectly," he said. "(Superman) is clear, bright, all that is noble and good, and Batman represents the dark, obsessive and vengeful side. They are two sides of the same coin and that is material for great drama."

No actors have been cast for the title roles yet, according to Petersen, whose credits include "The Perfect Storm" and "In the Line of Fire."

The new film is not a continuation of the previous "Superman" series starring Christopher Reeve, last brought to theaters in 1987\'s "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace."

"Batman vs. Superman," written by "Seven" screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker, is tentatively set to begin filming in early 2003.

I don\'t know about everyone else, but I\'m looking forward to this movie, only thing I don\'t like is it seems as though Batman will be the villian, and I like Batman more than Superman.

I doubt this ever see\'s the light. Warner Bro\'s has three other Batman projects on the back burner already. Batman: Year One, Batman Beyond (live action) and Batman: Year Two. Plus they have a Superman movie that they can\'t get out of the scripting / casting phase . It seems to me that they are just digging themselves a hole by announcing all these movies that very well may never see the light of day.

All I have to say is go Batman.  Superman wasn\'t half the hero he was.

Batman made himself a hero, he didn\'t have super powers like superman.  Superman just came to this planet and was practically given powers, but Batman is a self made man.

So long as Batman remains methodical, technical, and thorough, he can outsmart Superman at every turn.  The true scope of Superman\'s powers have been scanned, tested, and brought to its knees.  Only uninspired writing and an awful resurrection story brought him back, but in the end, Batman could finish what Doomsday started, with his brains and wit alone.

batman would get his hands on some kryptonite, make a full on suit of it, and then go to work on superman.  Let\'s face it supermans one weakness is a very large one, and can be capitalized on quite easily.

George Clooney is still under contract to play batman one more time. And as far as I know, warner hasn\'t bought him out of that contract. Personally, I didnt like clooney as batman. But he was better than Kilmer.

i would like to see a new batman, only because Keaton (sp) is too old.  Also superman will be played by someone new, unless the figure out a way to hide a wheel chair during the fight scenes.  Anyone have an opinion on who should play these roles?

Batman can always do the "Matrix" on him like most movies do, nowadays.

Keaton was and still is the modern Batman. I cannot think of one person they could cast that could match the intense stare he had in the good ole\' Bat suit. As for those other wannabe\'s (Kilmer and Clooney)..Well, they are just terrible.

Oh and if good ole\' Christopher Reeve can\'t be Superman, than no one can..

Just my two cents.

It\'s kind of strange that they would present batman as the "dark, obsessive and vengeful" side.  I mean, have you ever seen some of the early batman shows and movies with Adam West?  That batman was presented as a humorous sort of superhero.  For some reason, they decided to evolve him into this twisted, insane "dark knight."  Ah well, maybe dark and obsessive sells better.

the key to being a good batman is being a good bruce wayne fighting scenes can be faked but being dorky neurotic and having a dark side at the same time is what makes batman a young tom hanks or a young alec bladwin would be good but theyre old and fat and hanks wouldnt be belivable only because of other roles he played nick cage but hes a wuss and doesnt know the meaning of "toneing it down"

Oh man I laughed pretty loud when I read that.  Not good to read this stuff while I\'m at work.

Yeah I read this story in the Hollywood Reporter a few days ago, but I was too busy to post it.

I think they should make this a full CG film, with CG versions of real actors.  That way they can cast Christopher Reeve (with his consent of course) and a muscled-up Michael Keaton.  They\'d have to get someone else to do Reeve\'s voice though, because doesnt\' he have a pretty severe speech impediment now?

Bob Kane\'s original version of Batman was dark (back when it was called "Detective comics"). Infact , Batman even killed someone in the original comics. He then went towards a more light hearted approach to the comics and eventually went back to the dark obsessive Batman that we know today.
As for the 60\'s show with Adam West, I\'m a huge fan of that series (even have the DVD movie). The show was about camp. It was never meant to be taken serious, Adam West and Burt Ward went through a lot to keep it that way durin\' all the shows different producers / directors.

Oh and I agree a hundred percent JoP. Bruce Wayne is the important side of Batman, but still, you need to have that stare..Ya\' know, that one dark intense stare. Michael Keaton had it, damnit.
