Microsoft stakes IP claims on OpenGL
By Andrew Orlowski in London
Posted: 10/07/2002 at 13:27 GMT
In January we revealed that Microsoft had acquired a chunk of SGI\'s graphics portfolio. At the time we mused if the Beast had a plan to scupper OpenGL.
This was taking paranoia too far, wise heads told us.
But in the minutes of the OpenGL developer meeting, it\'s clear that Microsoft has staked an IP claim on portions of the OpenGL spec, and it\'s willing to license it\'s patents on RAND terms.
"Microsoft believes they have patent rights relating to the ARB_vertex_program extension. They did not contribute to the extension, but are trying to be upfront about it. They\'re offering to license their IP under reasonable and nondiscriminatory terms; will license rights to the extent necessary, provided a reciprocal license is granted to MS. Granted on 1:1 basis for OpenGL 1.3, 1.4, and earlier versions. Contact Dave Aronson for more specifics ... Microsoft does believe they have IP claims against fragment shaders, too."
This gives the first public indication that hardware manufacturers are beginning to rub up against Microsoft\'s patent portfolio. Whether the Beast\'s goal is to kill OpenGL with kindness, or simply to let the GPU manufacturers know who\'s da boss, we don\'t know. The wording is misleadingly benign: non-discriminatory licenses are only non-discriminatory until there\'s some discrimination.
And right now it\'s too early to say. All we can see is the shark\'s fin.
But we\'ll be keeping our eyes on two patents filed by SGI - which created OpenGL - particularly this one and this one. If we discover that these have been assigned to Microsoft, it may be time to leave the beach entirely.
Any views from Linux developers or OpenGL developers on non-Microsoft platforms? ®

If MS does this the GameCube will DIE cuz it uses OpenGL.. Im dont think the PS2 uses OpenGL though.
Still this sucks!

GA Forum (http://pub111.ezboard.com/fgamingageforumsfrm17.showMessage?topicID=8782.topic)
Lots of other articles on there aswell.

Can someone say.... MONOPOLY???
-
You guys don\'t get it, do you? YOu cannot patent the numbers one and zero , as it is binary language. If you *could* then MS would own the whole computer market, not to mention every other thing electronic..
Its a joke article.
-
This article is a joke.
-
bullshit
they CANNOT patent the binary system
m$ DID NOT create it
-
DAMN YOU L-I-C!!!
If only i didnt hesitate in replying to read the rest of the article i would have beaten you!!!
-
Wrong article :)
Its about OPENGL not binary code.
-
Microsoft trying to copyright OpenGL is one thing, but this article was about copyrighting the BINARY SYSTEM ITSELF
Which you cannot do. Read the comments by Steve Jobs and others.. they are obviously FAKE .. an abacus for the 21st century?? analogue computers??? animals??? please

Needless to say the article was hilarious
"Think of this as a partnership," Gates said. "Like the ones and zeroes of the binary code itself, we must all work together to make the promise of the computer revolution a reality. As the world\'s richest, most powerful software company, Microsoft is number one. And you, the millions of consumers who use our products, are the zeroes."

Doh.. I copyed the wrong article from the beginning.. It was supposed to be the OPENGL one.. *looks like an idiot* :)
-
Puh, for the last time.. the article is making a JOKE ABOUT MICROSOFT COPYRIGHTING OPENGL
The first article is A JOKE
Unfortunately, posting the first article has ruined a perfectly good thread about Microsoft and OpenGL

I thought they meant some OpenGL code or something. As I said, I copied the wrong one.
(note the title says OPENGL not binary code.

Just by reading the article it was obvious that it was written by no one of consequence. It\'s amateurish and doesn\'t garner respect.

Yeah, let\'s keep reminding folks this is the right place go for insulting one another:rolleyes:
Your turn Eric:mad:

Is this the part where I correct his grammar and tell him that he should have said "reading and understanding skills.
But that would be pointless, no?
pstwo - He is no Ripclawe, all he does is rip off "news" from the GA forums, then brings it here with a touch of spite.

Eric is the SEGA version of Lazy8, pstwo.
PS: Im still waiting for those amazing F355 screens you were talking about Eric. ;)

random quote i found
Microsoft seems bent on controlling all sectors in the computer entertainment market.
i cannot wait till the day m$ stumbles
if a corporation was the epitome of the devil, it would be m$
i can only hope for them to be the next enron
-
Then the whole PC market would go under. You think average granny Martha wants to learn Linux after using Windows? Windows has that same draw that AOL has, ease of use. If MS went under, the whole PC sector would fail.
Standard Oil wa the devil, by the way, MS is more like Hitler. :) If Rockefeller had his money today, it would be worth around 100 Billion dollars, Standard Oil was massive.
Eric Jacob
-
i\'d take standard oil over OPEC anyday
and why couldnt she use linux?
its not command line driven anymore and can use a GUI in case you didnt know
-
Actually, I didn\'t know. Its been a while since I have seen Linux in motion. Even still. Old people are set in their ways and Windows is the easiest to use, even if it is the buggiest. Much like AOL.
I would take SO over OPEC, too. Since SO was AT LEAST all about low prices to kill the competition, that is until the competition was all gone, then the jack came. Some companies are never meant to be broken up. Look at AT&T, the whole phone industry is shot because some whiny bitches decided to break up a well oiled machine. That well oiled, well run machine turned into many irresponsible companies such as WorldCom, etc. Breaking up MS would be a mistake, while eltting them run rampant is obviously not an option, either.

The phone system break up has had it\'s plus and minuses. We can now shop for cheaper long distance rates but multiple severs has opened the door for them going hog wild in several directions. Seems now that the Fed has more than one neck to keep its foot on, AT&T has decided it\'s okay to try and openly swindle consumers now that being broken up is no longer a threat. The latest I heard is numerous complaints about the speed of BB in one area being only slightly faster than dial up, after doing heavy promo for sign ups with the fine print in the ads and contracts reading there is no guarantee of a minimum speed.
Another good one in the news a month or so ago was AT&T sending out a calling card worth 100 free hours for signing up for their long distance service. The catch is once you used the free hours, at $.96 per min. (very steep) the rate leaped to $3.95 per min. (OMG!). I could go on with more but you get the idea, freed of their monopoly and the Feds focus that went along with it, they feel they can afford to be downright dirty tricky bastards.
MS is a different story. Never a true monopoly they\'ve felt free to be bastards all along. My ideal is not to see them broken completely (well, we can always hope) but only to see the core of their closed OS become public domain. Failing that, even preferably, would be to see consumers slowly turn to an alternative OS owned by noone. Behold;
PS3 and Linux, the Trojan horse makes ready to enter the MS kingdom. Bill, we have a seat behind Steve waiting for you, Window users all over the globe would like nothing better than to see your ass take it. What\'s that Bill? xbox2 will keep the mighty horse at bay? In your dreams!
Oh sorry, I do tend to ramble on. Don\'t I?

whenever you sign up for broadband service, ask to speak to one of thier techs (not the service people, they dont know shit) and ask them what they\'re CIR (confirmed information rate) is
thats the minimum bandwidth they\'ll guarantee

When MS goes down we can all buy Macs!
Mac OS X >>>> Windows
I just need some money to buy that DP 1GHz Mac I want...
