Hey guys, I didn\'t know where else to go about this little problem I\'ve been having.
I got my PS2 about 2 months ago, and about a 4 weeks ago I went to take out GTA3 and put in GT3. The tray opened and went I went to close it the tray stayed open about 1cm. I just pushed it in and started playing the game. Then I went to open awhile later and it wouldnt open.
I called Sony\'s tech support and they told me to put my hand over the tray door and try to open it. That didnt work, so they told me I should send it in.
I just dont want to wait for it to be fixed and sent back... is there anything else I can do to fix this problem?

I\'m not sure if this will help. You can try unplugging the unit and then plugging it back in and that might help get it open.
Not sure though.

heh, believe me, ive tried that :)
-
I kind of figured you might have. I\'m not sure what you can do other than sending it in for repair. Have you gently tried to persuade it to open as you pushed the eject button?

i tried pushing in on it while pressing the eject button, and tried prying the door open with a screwdriver (the front plate just popped off). i dont know if i should take it apart or not because it might just be a minor repair that i could do myself.
-
If you\'re a brave soul you can pop the top and try to see what\'s wrong. I know this is obvious but make sure you unplug the unit.
Good luck!

anybody else have any input? :(

have you tried listening while pushing the eject button, to see if the problem is the button relay, or the tray motor?

the tray makes a little click noise (not really a click, but thats the best i can describe it) and the right side tries to come out but doesnt. the left side does nothing.
-
try prying it out, gently. When you pushed it in, you may have knocked it off it\'s track, and by prying very gently, you might realign it.
-
i kindof tried that and the front face plate of the tray popped off. i was considering getting 2 pair of needle nose pliars and pulling both sides out evenly. should i? :-\\

Have you tried sticking it in the freezer yet? :D
-
well I\'m no expert, but if you did it very carefully, I would say it\'s worth a shot. you could also take the thing apart (open the box), and see what\'s preventing it from opening. because something is obviously stopping the path of the tray, if the motor is in working condition.

yes, 3 times now, hasnt worked yet

try this, it\'s a tray calibration;
Take the top of the dvd drive off now i need you to remove your tray hit the eject button and get it out as far it will go flip off the switch in the back and unplug it flip the ps2 over you will notice a screw at the bottomside of the tray securing a metal rod loosen that screw pull out the rod and remove the tray by pulling it forward and out now towards the front of the ps2 you will notice a long white rectangular gear push it all the way to the right now start sliding your tray back in keep pushing the white gear left until your tray nicely slides back in reassemble don\'t forget to reinstall the rod if it won\'t fit flush turn it to the other side one is longer and one is shorter and give it a try.
-
oh btw, did you push really hard on the tray when you hit the eject button? you have to push real hard for that remedy to work. that helps if it is off track, but if it needs calibration use the above tactic.
-
you could always try the throw it against the wall method
-
Or you could send it in to Sony to not risk damaging it even further.. :)
-
yes he could send it to Sony, but would that be any fun? no it wouldn\'t. And he\'s a man, and it is in our DNA to take stuff apart, and furrow our brows when we relize that the job is above our skill level, yet we continue to TRY and fix it until we break something, get annoyed and throw it against the wall.
-
Or you could take the Paul approach and sit around pissing and moaning about it in several random threads which have no relevance to your problems at all until someone just gets tired of your temper tantrums and buys you a new one just to get ya to STFU.
 @ Paul.. least he\'s doin it in console debate where it belongs now.
BTW: If your warrante is already expired.. jus go ahead and pop the top. If your motor is in good working condition and there\'s no problems with the DVD lens.. then it should be a snap to fix. I have absolutely 0 experience working on CD players.. and the same problem you\'re describing happened to my cousin\'s CD burner. I just poped it out.. took it apart.. realigned it back on track. Slapped it back together and it worked perfectly. Even without those two screws which are supposed to go... well I dunno where. I\'m still scratching my head over that one....

Is there a game inside?
-
yes there is, GT3
-
i\'m not sure but their might be a possibility that the game cd might not have been placed correctly and that it might have(the cd i.e) wedged itself in the tray. i dont know how to explain this in any other way but i can tell u that it almost happened to me once but i pressed the eject button in time.
-
so, now for the moment of truth. what should i do? take the top off or just attempt pulling the tray straight out?
-
Yeah, thats what I figured when he said there was a game inside. Perhaps the game slid out from the tray, maybe you should grab your PS2 and shake the shit out of it trying to dislodge it....
-
I would just take the top off, your not endangering it by doing so.
-
is there directions anywhere for doing so?
-
I don\'t think so. But I\'m not sure, but I think you destroy the warranty if you open it. I would think all you\'d have to do is unscrew the top off...
-
look personally i dont recommend opening up the ps2 as it can be very tricky i dont recommend it even morso if it was a brand new one or if the warranty hasnt expired, it would be better off if u send it to sony and survive without yer ps2 for a few weeks rather than screw it up.
-
i dont think the CD is lodged inside anywhere, because i turn it on and it plays fine, so it must still be in the tray correctly
-
I bought a ex-rental game before and when they took the sticker off the centre of the disk it left a sticky circle in the middle of the disk, and every time I opened the tray it would get stuck about 10mm out and I had to force it to open. But once I cleaned the sticky stuff off it worked fine.Could be your problem??
-
forcing it open can strip the gears, then you\'re up an unsanitary tributary.
either send it to sony, or open that bad boy up.
-
i got it to open... heres what i did.
when i pushed the eject button and i saw the tray try to come out, i just pulled a little with a pair of needle noses and it opened right up. the bad thing is i have to keep doing this, and it still stays open about 1cm when i push close, so i have to force it back in.
-
Well.... That kinda blows that you still have to yank and push it back in when you wanna play and stop.. But at least you got it fixed.:)
-
after a while you\'ll strip the gears. you may want to leave it in the open position, and try to find out what is stopping it from functioning like it should be.
-
I had something similar happen to me about... 2 minutes ago. Only it involved my PS2 falling into the floor, making it bounce TWICE and eventually getting my GTA3 and CD tray stuck! I got it out and my PS2 is fine, no dents or scratches, I\'m surprised. The same, however, cannot be said about my GTA3. Oh well, it wasn\'t THAT fun anyway. Starting a killing spree can get boring after 10 minutes... To each his own, I guess.
I\'m going to buy the vertical stand first thing this morning, I have to be more careful. :p
-
I had a similar problem last christmas but my system was screwed luckily I had that warranty and got a new one the next day....it was a godawful wait well it was the day after christmas you know....so the lesson is ALWAYS buy the warranty they do come in handy
-
heres what you do,take to ps2 to Wal-Mart9even if you didn\'t buy it there)and say you just bought it and when the guy saysno you call his boss and lie about it to him and say that you\'ll sue and they\'ll give you as many ps2\'s as you want.(beleive me i worked at Wal-Mart)
-
Oh, I like that last idea.
-
have you tried standing it vertically and tryied to open it? it might work, it did for me
