As many on these boards know I\'m a cop in training. And now I\'m getting close to entering the academy, so I need to start applying to Departments so that I\'m paid for going to the academy. I\'m wanting some opinions on where I should apply to, preferably warm climate (not completly nececary though), with desent night life. Anyone have some ideas?
(west coast would also be best)
-
Vegas... I\'m not being biased either... It barely rains, the police force here is also one of the best in all the cities I\'ve lived in (Police cars everywhere). And did you say night-life?
Also, shoot the asshole that created the Love Letter virus.
-
I was actually thinking of vegas, it also has a low cost of living index, average city=100, silicon valley=366, Vegas=80
-
And there are alot of hookers for the taking.
.... to arrest of course.
-
Meh. You can pretend that Vegas is good, but we all know New York is the greatest city on the planet :p
-
I\'m also looking at Portland;
Approximate annual salary: $34,861 at entry, $42,536 after six months, $57,096 after five years.
Overtime is paid at time and one-half.
A zero interest, 10 yr. loan for moving expenses, up to $5,000, for entry level officers moving over 100 miles.
Paid time off: 9 holidays, 3 personal days, and 13 sick days per year.
After 6 months of employment, $50,000 life insurance. Additional employee-paid life insurance available at group rate.
City provides uniforms, weapon, handcuffs, flashlight, duty belt, body armor, helmets, etc., and $90 a yr. equipment allowance.
Annual vacation: 0-4 years = 80 hours; 5-9 yrs. = 120; 10-14 yrs. = 140; 15-19 yrs. = 160; 20-24 yrs. = 180; and 25+ yrs. = 200.
After 30 days, fully paid family, medical, dental and vision coverage.
City contributes 100% into retirement.
I like that they pay for moving expenses.
they also have lower cost of living, too bad they don\'t pay as well as Berkley (100,000 a year after 5 years)

Skanectaty(sp), NY pays over a 100 grand a year, but I don\'t like that 364 cost of living index. ;)
-
What are the numbers like for New York? I\'m curious :)
-
well it\'s 365, only behind the bay area of Cali, in the US.
And number 8 in the most expensive in the world. (1 is tokyo)
-
New York? Well, that\'s a bit misleading. New York is so huge. It\'s damn expensive, for example, to live in manhattan, but other areas are much cheaper. You could live just outside the city too. Most of my family lives there, and it\'s really not too bad if you know where to look.
-
Las Vegas would be nice. I actually wanna live there someday. Not quite as hit year around, and there\'s alot more to do.
Don\'t move to Phoenix, though. But, if you want to be a firefighter we have some of the best of those. :D
-
i noticed that Pheonix had a low cost of living (78), but then I remembered that it was like 114 degrees there the other day....and that was the end of that thought.
Seattle is also up on my list...don\'t know why.
-
San Francisco\'s weather is pretty nice, but the night life isn\'t as vibrant as New York\'s.
-
I live very close to SF (reletivly speaking), and was seriously considering San Fransisco and Berkley for a while, but unfortunetly the damn cost of living is way up there.
-
I think Seattle would suck. It\'s cloudy there far more days than it\'s sunny. And it rains too much. I like rain, and i wish we would have more of it in the Phoenix area, but not as much as Seattle.
And theomen, it gets hotter than 114. Tomorrow I\'m guessing it will be around 116 with 40-50% humidity from the storm tonight. Monsoon stroms - awesome.....except the dust. Like tonight the dust from the storm was so bad it got through the vents into my house, then the power went out. So when you shined the flashlight you could see the dust in the light, and you could smell it. It sucked. Alright, now i\'m babbling.
-
My cousins live in Seattle. I wouldn\'t mind living there myself. It really is a beautiful part of the country.

Seriously. After what happened tonight, I\'m inclined to agree with ya there. :(

good lord!! If that happened here in Cali, I would think God was puniching me for some reason. (hmmm, maybe what triggered that weather in AZ is Fayded\'s addiction to Nun porn.....it\'s a bad habit ..hahahahahahahahahahaa....oh I\'m so funny!)
-
I say Seattle too... Just cuz.
-
For me, it would be a toss up between Portland and Seattle.
Portland is honestly the nicest, cleanest, most unique city I\'ve been too. I have plans on moving there someday or just visiting regularly...It\'s been a year since I\'ve been, I miss it so much.
-
Bergen in Norway... we have only 250 days with rain each year... and if we are lucky, about 1 month with sun. Lets not mention snow :/ But we have good nightlife.
-
Agnino come to Spain, after you arrive to Norway, I\'m pretty sure that you will love cold snow :p
-
Come to Lincoln, Nebraska ;)
Hot in the summer, cold in the winter, get to experience all of the seasons, living cost cant be THAT high (Hell, me and my dad are swinging an apartment and he only makes 32 thou a year, and that\'s for the both of us), and nightlife can be good at times, but if you\'re around for a night after a Nebraska Football Home Game, that\'s where the fun starts :)
See Yuz.
-
If you like rain, riots & loose women, give Manchester a try.
You won\'t be disappointed.
:D :D :D
-
Move to a suburb of Chicago. That way you are close to the greatest city in the states..(ALWAYS something to do in Chicago 24 hours a day) The benefit of living in the burbs of the city is lower crime rate..cost of living is cheaper than in the city itself.plus the suburban departments pay pretty well, not sure how it compares to the CPD though, but at least you don\'t have to worry about your life as much :)

No kidding. That was insane. I looked outside right after the D-Backs lost and I couldn\'t see 15 feet. It was eerie, just enough light to see whats happening. The side of my house that the wind was blowing towards had dust all over it, shingles fell off my roof, we had this big shelf type thing on my back porch and that got blown into the yard, along with everything on it. My neighbors had a block fence, some of that got blown down. That had to be the worst dust storm I\'ve ever seen here.
-
Orlando.. Its always pretty warm here, and the night life is good. I like it here. And, I suppose if hookers are your thing, there is alway OBT (Orange blossom trail) AKA hooker lane

I like Göteborg. :)
I also like smaller towns.
Maybe Ill buy my own island in the Stockholm archipelago. ;)
-
I like the town I live in. For the most part, it\'s peaceful and calm. But the politicians are assholes.

Do you live in the valley area? We had much more than just dust. Extremely heavy rain, raging winds, trees falling into houses, powerlines doing a domino effect. The apartment complex next to ours burst into flames. It was scary, the police and fire departments running around our buildings. I stayed outside with my friends in the extreme downpour and just watched the building burn down. At one point the roof collapsed and we were met with a huge burst of heat to the face. When the smoke got thick the firemen made us go inside. I got sick from smoke inhalation. :crap:
The scariest part was when they told us to be ready to evacuate, cuz it didn\'t look like the fire could be stopped. I was in major dispair thinking my home could be burnt to a crisp with all of my belongings. Sigh...thankfully it didn\'t come to that. They eventually stopped the fire and the power came back on. This was about 12:10 am. Needless to say, I didn\'t sleep well last night. Did you get a chance to drive around town yet? Like a freaking tornado blew through. :(
-
I live in mountains and heavy woods. But through developing, the trees are being cut down.
-
Austin is a very nice city to move too. Pospering very good and continuing. Night life is great and is also the Live music capital of the world if your into that sort of thing. Issues you might have with it though are humidity around the summer months, horracious traffic and housing around there is sky high. Austin is considered one of the top ten cities in America to live in or it was if it isnt anymore. Im not trying to win your vote but just merely a suggestion, give it some consideration.

I live in Queen Creek, you probably don\'t know where that is, but it\'s about 45 minutes Southeast of Phoenix.
It\'s basically all desert the way the storm came from, so the dust storm was huge. It knocked down trees out here too. Today when i went to the mall there was a metal roof awning wrapped around a power poll. My pool is a mess, there is half an inch of dirt on the bottom. Then after the dust we got a pretty good downpour for about 10 minutes with thunder and lightning. Then after that it calmed down.
I saw pictures on the news of what happened in Phoenix. Roofs blown off, one of the runways at Sky Harbor had to be closed.
Chaos.

Who was the one that said San Fransico\'s weather was nice? From what I\'ve seen its nothing short of terrible.
Time for the general geography lesson for the day for Bozco.
In this world, there are many different climates, but the best climate in the world is in the San Francisco Bay Area and in the Mediterranean. The climate I am referring to is called the Mediterranean climate and those two places are the only places in the world where it exists. It basically means that the weather, ran or shine, generally hovers in the 60-70 degree range which is perfect because it resembles room temperature. It may get foggy, we may get wind, we may get rain, we may get sun, but in almost all cases, the temperature stays fairly consistant and we don\'t get too much rain or too much sun. It\'s just the right amount.
*Exits the classroom

Which reminds me of something I have heard before.
"The coldest winter I have ever spent was the summer I spent in SanFransico."

Austin and surrounding areas are extremely nice. (Round Rock, Georgetown, Cedar Park) The music scene is great and the culture is varied...lots to do.
Only downsides are the whether and traffic as PSX_J said...
Whether always seems like an extreme. It\'s either too hot or too cold, too wet or too dry. Traffic is just bad, I think Austin is ranked in the top 10 worst drivers in America.
-
Hooray Ryu, to bad I\'ve noticed the weather there rains far to much from what my cousin tells me. And its colder than I would like at times during the summer.
-
Phoenix and Mesa (a big city linked to Phoenix) are like 1-2 in red light runners. Then I think we have the 4th highest too.
Go Valley of the Sun.
-
Personally, I would hate to be in a climate that hovers around the same temperature all year. Here in upsate NY, we get some extremes. We get some cold snowy winters, and it gets pretty hot during the summer, but I love it like that. I would hate to not have the heat of the summer, and I would hate to not have the snow of the winter. The seasons seem to all come out in NY the way that they are meant to be. Generally we get rainy springs, with mild temperatures, hot summers with things like thunderstorms, brisk falls, where you can see the beautiful leaves changing in the mountains over here, and cold snowy winters. I wouldn\'t trade it for any other climate.

Boston is a wonderful city, historical too. Low in crime. Good for business too.

"The coldest winter I have ever spent was the summer I spent in SanFransico."
That\'s probably true. It doesn\'t reach 90 and 100 here all that often, but to give you an example of how the climate is so limited to this region, just drive north or south from SF for about 30 minutes and the temperature adjusts a good 10-20 degrees higher. It\'s the fact that it remains consistantly at 50-70 all year round that makes it desireable.

That\'s funny, it hasn\'t rained here in quite awhile. You must have been talking to your cousin during el nino.
-
well I\'ve contacted the Portland recruiter, and have e-mailed a few others. Still no contact from Portland though, either they\'re assholes, or they don\'t check their e-mail often.
-
best city?
sydney of course.
-
I\'d love to check out Chicago because of the talkshows.
-
yea..its nice to be in the front row at JJ or JS and get flashed by nice lookin bewbies!!!!
