Just like the topic says, why do we tip in resturants? Do ppl tip you for doing your job?
-
Its like a thankyou for good service. Aussies are really, really particular about good service, so not many people tip here.
I think tipping is good. Gives incentive for someone who probably is earning minimum wage to work hard.
-
Do you have a job racer?..If so what do you do?
-
Tipping is to those people who get shitty wages in service jobs - so they partly rely on people tipping them (some places). Other places it\'s just to be friendly.
-

I work in retail. I print photos.

Id be safe at assuming you don\'t receive tips for a job well done correct?
So that being said..why should servers be tipped? I don\'t get tipped when I squeeze some xtra horsepower from a motor for a customer.
-
In some places, waiters get paid below the minimum wage due to the insane amount of tips they can sometimes get from customers who appreciate their excellent service. I was tipped $200 by a couple of guys who did nothing but drink Doms and eat shrimp coctail while they discussed about their deal with some upstart company called Motorola.
I said to them, "You guys are mechanics?"
One said, "heheh! No...we\'re into telecommunications. Wanna buy our stocks?"
I said "No thanks."
God dang it!

Its basically good business. In America, where tipping is rampant, if you gave a customer extremely good service, going out of your way to help them outside of normal service practice then I think you should be tipped.
It probably wouldn\'t happen very often in Australia though, only in fancy resturants in say Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne.

I understand that, but who\'s choice is that? When you feel under payed, you look for a new job. Why should I be forced to make up the rest of their paycheck?
-
cause not all of them are spoiled and fully taken care of by thier parents like you, perhaps?
<---used to be a waiter
-
Service people get tipped to promote good service. If they knew they were going to make 9 bucks an hour every day all day long till next year when they go up to 9.15 and hour, do you really think they would always give good service?
Do you go 100% at your job all the time? No, because sometimes you aren\'t being watched.
Waiters have to be 100% for the customer at all times. Have you ever gotten bad service at a restaurant and then gone back again? I guarantee you you had second thoughts of going back.
I always tip well. Especially bar tenders at a bar I will be at all night. You tip them heavy right off the bat they will pick you out of a crowd and you won\'t wait for that 2nd, 3rd, 10th beer....
Pizza guys you have to tip or they will spit on your pizza next drive out to your house.
-
I work as a cashier. Half of my money is relied on tips. People appreciate when you take care of them, not slow w/ food, not mean to customers etc.
It\'s a custom, tipping people because we get shit for wages. Besides that, doesn\'t everyone need a little cash in their wallet.

WHy are you speaking out of your ass? I havent been "taken care of" by my parents since I was 16..Im now 24. I certainly wasn\'t spoiled during those 1st 16 years either.
Thank You, come again.
-
You aren\'t getting tipped because of shitty wages. They could very easily tack on 2 bucks to each meal and pay you guys more. Tipping is to promote good service........
You would probably not get a wage at all if the gov\'t could really trust you waiters, etc. out there to withhold enough taxes.

Vid, i agree with some of the points you are making whore-heartedly. Im not on some anti-tipping thing here..just the thought of tipping being expected.
I ALWAYS tip bartenders well. That way they tend to make a better drink for you..or add more liqour. Good tipping a tender is a MUST!!
The same with my favorite delivery places. They remember and will prioritize your meal accordingly.
Actually, I do do my job 100% at all times when dealing with customers. If I were to be half assed, that makes me and the company bad. The only time Im not 100% is if Im just hanging around or stocking product..cleaning up etc..etc. When Im assembling, taking an order, or adding a modification, Im am always at 100%
TOBG: You get tipped from beign a cashier?!?!? I\'ve actually never heard of a cashier relying on tips.
-
Here is a little something I found..
» The custom of tipping initially met with resistance in the United States. There was even an Anti-Tipping Society of America, which obviously failed, to end what the New York City papers called in the early 1900s a “nuisance.”
» There are many theories of how tipping came to be, but the most prevalent story goes back several hundred years to England. When people traveled by stagecoach, they often sent a servant ahead to make arrangements for their arrival. The servant would give the service providers money “to ensure promptness,” which was shortened by initials to be “tip.” Today a tip is more of a thank you after good service than a bribe to get good service.
» Tourists visiting Iceland should know that tipping at a restaurant is considered an insult.
That last one is interesting. Is that true no-one?

People like you are the reason I feel that way. Why am I a cheap bastard just b/c I dont want to tip an ass or a slow server? Do your job correctly and promtly and there wont be a problem correct, but when you insult customers and potential customers you wonder why me and others think this way.

Look we get paid 2.13 an hour where I work what ya\'ll don\'t understand, is without that tip we aren\'t making jack sh!t, its people like u that get bad service cuz u don\'t wanna tip.;)
edit* i agree with not tipping or not tipping well for someone who was not good, but people who deserve the tip should get about 15% and someone shitty should still get 10% which is average.

i give good tips. "be good to your mother"
Well, i\'ve never really had to tip anyone. So i really don\'t care about tips. I guess giving the pizza dood a tip counts. 2 dollers is about my limit. I\'m a tight arse.

That\'s what I\'ve been saying all along. SOME people in SOME jobs rely PARTLY on tips. So I have no problem tipping them (in theory that is, no one here in Denmark has such a low wage).

I know what you make..I was a server for like a month. I don\'t care if you dont get ANY wage from them. Judging from this
"people like u that get bad service cuz u don\'t wanna tip"
I tip based on service..if you offer bad service form get go..of course you won\'t get a dime. Work for what you want. im not gonna stiff a earned tip.
Just recently..we went to a resturant and ate..service was decent..no complaints. I go to pay the check and I overhear our waiter talking to another waitress. "That mother****er didn\'t leave me a tip"
Well i had to get change from the bill to leave him a tip, but guess what..he didnt get one. I walked over to him with $10 in my hand..he was smiling expecting to receive the dough. I told him
"You are correct, this "mother****er" is NOT going to tip you" and started to walk away. I then hear him, "but Sir, I only assumed"
Catch my drift mjps?
-
I have usually just told pizza guys to not "worry about the change" which is usually just a few bucks
last night i went out of my way to give them.. OVER TEN DOLLARS
I like tipping.. makes me feel good :)

yeah some people are like that, but think that is a very big generealization, i heard the same thing int olive garden once me and my friends went in to eat and the guy was walking to the table and i heard him go oh god not again, we didnt leave em shit, cuz he deserved it, i\'m not saying u have to tip someone, i\'m sayin if service is good than it is feasible to tip.
-
See, thats what Im saying. I dont mind tipping when the service IS good..but more often than not..ppl expect a tip for doing shit.
My other problem is places that automatically include the 15% gratuity intot he bill. The service could have sucked, but instead of having an option to tip, you are forced to pay for shit. Also, its even worse when ppl expect a tip when it is already included..that sux as well.
-

That\'s funny luckee, but you can probably expect a special surprise in your meal if you go back to that restaurant.:surprised
I tip really well when I get good service. Giving a good tip ensures me that my beer will be poured before I even reach my seat at my local watering hole. If I get bad to OK service then I lower the percentage to send a message.
I think the best way to deal with bad service is to tell the waiter or waitress why you are unhappy with the service and that you would leave a better tip the next time if the service improves.
Then never return because you know they\'re going to add some unsavory ingredients to your meal.:)

If you knew just this guy was a jerk. Then why did you ask why any servers should get tips.

ACE: I never go back to places where I receive bad service..so Im not worried :)

Besides, it wasn\'t intended such as a personal rant or I would have posted in R&R, but more something for discussion. Everyone else seemed to have figured that out but you.
-
The whole reason you tip servers is because they get payed shitty wages. And when they miss one tip it ****s them over. I always tip some. Anywhere from 5%-20%. You wonder why the servers get edgy when waiting for a tip, some people are assholes and don\'t tip just because they don\'t feel like it.

That is true, but it shouldnt be expected by them like soooo many do. They are expected to do their job thoroughly and promtly. Some don\'t feel they have to pay, and they dont. Doesnt make them any less of a person b/c they dont tip even when service is adequate

If you don\'t tip with adequate service I would say your a bad person.
And how do you expect a server to do a perfect job when they have 5 tables to handle. After working for 7 hours straight I doubt they can be perfect. But some people think they are "special" and they are the only ones that deserve service.

I do take into account how busy a waitress is when I am being served. If I see that they\'re running around table to table because they\'re short handed it will not lower their tip.

-
I have to tell you then, if they cant handle it..they should find another job...thats why I left Ruby Tuesdays. Sure I made less money at the next job..but it was certainly worth not having to deal with customers in that manner. Other servers can do the same. I still fail t see how someone who doesnt tip can be labeled the bad person. It\'s not law to to tip. It is just nice to do. Just b/c a person isn\'t nice does not make them mean.
I bet you wouldnt settle for that excuse from your local sanitation dept. if they didnt pick up your trash for a while.

Hello again ass...since you like speaking from yours..I might as well call you that. Once again you have no idea of what you speak.
Im far from cheap..I just refuse to pay for what isnt deserved. Im only nasty when they are..Matter o fact..Ive only been nasty to a server twice..and they certainly deserved it. Now..if they would not be that way..then they have nothing to worry about correct? From me anyway..what everyone else does isn\'t my problem.
-
How would you feel luckee if you went to germany where the tip is already put into the price of the meal. This is probably to avoid the assholes that don\'t tip. And I don\'t see how anyone can easily handle 5 tables at once Luckee. Patience is always needed from the customers.

I pay all of the bill if service was good..if service was excellent, they might even get more. If the service was bad, I owuld pay the enitre bill, except for that percentage.
With minimal organization, it isnt hard. I didnt start having trouble untill I would have 8 tables or more..then it becomes a little harder. Besides, all it take si socmmon sense form the server. Go up to your guest and inform them things may be a little delayed since it is so busy. Most never do this. Communication is key, like it is with anything in life.
-
i know what im talking about luckee
i worked in restaraunts for over 10 years and i will NEVER go back to it. starting in the dish room and ending up store manager and sous chef. people like you frustrated me day in and day out
the moral of this entire thread is that yer a cheap bastid, accept it
stay home and learn to cool if you dont feel like tipping
-
Ok..lets try this agin..this time will you actually read.
I didnt say you didnt know what you spoke of pertaining to the industry..I stated it b/c you are making assumptions about me you know nothing about.
Moral of this story is..if you knew how to read..is that I tip when service normal to excellent..I refuse top pay for sub-standard service.
ONce again you make assumptions..I can cook rather well..not perfect..but that doesnt mean I dont like going to a nice resturant and enjoying better food..varieties I may not be ale to make, and just plain atmosphere.
If ppl like me frustrated you, you must have sucked as a server..otherwise..you were decently tipped.
-
i made hella money waiting tables, but it wasnt worth it when 3/4 of the people were buffoons
you bitch about having to tip = you are cheap
thats an equation, not an assumption
-
No..I bitch about being expected to to tip when it isnt derserved..see the point?
Therefore..your math doesnt add up.
-
What percentage do you normally tip?
Is it worse to not tip at all or to tip low?
Do you consider cooking time in how you justify a tip?
It\'s not like the waiter has anything to do with cooking time.
I usually tip at least 20%. If they suck however I always still leave something. Maybe a buck, or a quarter or something. I think tipping low says a lot more than not tipping at all. And I don\'t take into consideration of cooking problems with my tip as long as the waiter is aware of the length of time I had waited. If the waiter is attentive to me then I don\'t mind delays.

You also seem to get it vid :)
It really depends on the level of service. I almost always tip at least $4-6 on any meal the gf and I eat. If they are over the top..it is not unusual we tip at least $10 seeing how we were both in that industry at one time, we appreciate such good service.
I do not count cooking time..however if we are informed are meal is a little delayed b/c of a back-up in the kitchen..we certainly remember that during tip time since the server did actually tell us.
I usually dont tip during very bad service. If it is ok..but not horrible..then a buck or 2. SOmetimes I will just leave some change in the glass of water if Im feeling evil.
-
I\'d say vid was more on our side. You don\'t tip at all which is being a complete ****. While no matter what he tips.
-
being a waiter isn\'t like being an engineer, conductor, pilot, etc.
A waiter/waitress serves you. They meet your needs. They talk to you, suggest meals, they want to be YOUR friend. They serve you. You walk off w/ out tipping them, you wont get a good server when you come back.
it\'s called Common Courtesy.
I work at a restaurant, I know.

From what it sounds like you would not tip for things that are beyond their control. What happens if a server had two luckee\'s. One at two different tables. How the hell could they meet all your needs. Its not possible to have perfect service always, and a lot of times its out of the servers control. And Luckee, treat people as how you want to be treated.

No, it is quite simple. When I goto a resturant, after being seated by the host/hostess. I expect to asked what I would like to drink while the server passes me a menu. I would like them to check and see if I am ready to order after comming back with the drinks in a reasonable amount of time.
I would like them to make sure my water or other drinks are fresh. I would like to be updated if the cooks are a little behind.
After the meal, I dont want to be waiting around all day for the bill. Seems pretty reasonable huh?
As for the Xtra tip, its nice to be smiled at often and act like my business is appreciated instead of like they are doing me a favor. It is nice to be asked during the meal if Im happy or if I need anything else. Its nice after the meal to be asked how it was//etc..Now those are the things that warrant a $10-15 tip for a $35 meal.
Besides, Im not asking for perfect service..Im asking for adequte service. The perfect service are the ones who get the big tips b/c they have gone above and beyond.
As for treating ppl how I want to be treated? Uhm no..sounds like you have been in the bible too much. I treat others as I have been treated by them.
-
Well I think nothing warrants no tip unless they
1. Take a shit in your food
2. Cuss at you

that is where our opinions differ..so what. Do you pay for everything you are not satisfied with? If so, thats stupid. So what if dont share your opinion..deal with it.

On the Food Network (yeah...we watch a lot of food shows) they say "TIPS" stands for:
To
Insure
Proper
Service
-
Tipping is to ensure good service if you return to such establishment. If you don\'t tip, they remember and vice versa. If you visit frequently, they get to know you and sometimes it pays off.
For example, there is this one Japanese restaurant and they know me quite well and I get free drinks when I visit or free sides of rice and whatnot. It\'s just a nice gesture saying thank you for the nice tips I generally give.
What\'s wrong with tipping in general?

Heh..that would actually be a good idea...cough up the tip before the meal if it did indeed ensure good service at a resturant.
I know it works at my favorite titty bar and bars in general. My drinks are rarely watered down.

Who do you feel compelled to tip.

Anyone who serves me in a resturant or bar type place..if service is adequte. Hell I even tip my UPS guy..He knows that I have to be at work in the morning and no one would be home to receive the package. So he would go out of his way to make sure I had something in the morning if he was working. Why, b/c I was the first person to tip him. That was a long shot..but one day I got alot of stuff via UPS and he carried it all up to the apt..over 450lbs of seperate packages..so I gave him a few bucks.
Furniture or heavy appliance delivery people..I usually give them a few bux or some cold beer on hot days.

That is my point. When you tip people, especially if you tip them well, they remember you and go out of their way to do nice things for you. That\'s why we tip. I also explained that quite well in the post just above that I made.

Yes, this is true Ryu, but If im not happy with said service provided, Im not going to tip hardly anything, if at all. I certainly wont be going back to a place Im not happy with. Thats just asking for trouble one way or another.
-
I generally leave at least a small tip even if the service is bad. Think of it this way, they could have just dumped food all over you. Besides that, if the food is really good, I tip really well too insuring that next time, in addiition to the great food, you\'ll get great service. If the waitress is bitchy, what difference does it make if the steak practically melts in your mouth?
Just food for thought. ;)

luckee, what you wrote and what yer talking about are two totally different things

Ive said it before and I guess I have to say it again since you are both to blind to read. Bozco already brought this up and I answered him. So I will give you guys the same answer I gave him
I worded it wrong..suck my ass.
I can see why most of you thought my opinion on tipping was one way b/c of that..even still, I think my posts after the original speak for themselves. Sorry for you all being so butthurt over a slight error on my part.

OK, here\'s a question for ya. Why don\'t we tip before the meal? Then if we tip well the people will work extra hard for you.
Do you ever feel funny after leaving a big tip not knowing if the waiter was really appreciative?
Say I leave 10 bucks on a 30 dollar tab. I could have just as easily laid 5 bucks down and I still would have made it to my car.
What made me leave 10 bucks instead of 5?
Do I really think the waiter will remember me next time I come?
Or am I tipping the waiter well so he will be happy for everyone else that night?
-
good waiters remember thier good tippers, they also remember the shitty ones (like luckee) :)
thats not cream of potato soup yer eating next time you order from that waiter you undertipped, luckee
-
like i siad..doesnt matter..I dont repeat business at places iM not happy. Im ratehr particular that way. Just like in my line of work, if ppl arent happy with us, then they dont order more parts.

I will have to agree with all that Vid has said here. The only difference is that I tip 15%. 20% if they aer good and 10% if they suck. People have bad days and good days. If I can see that they are genuinly having a bad day I still think they deserve at least 10%.
*hopes this thread does not turn into a religious debate*

just keep comming back for more buddy. You will, you always do..

I usually go 20%, if it\'s under $50, give them 10-12 dollars.
$50+, if they handled kids well, met my needs, and were just damn nice to talk to. What the hell $25 dollars.

amn i like you luckee but man this is out of hand tipping is not a contest we arent there for your ****ing entertainment ive been a sever/bartender for 4 years straight for half of that ive been trying to support a family on
i like my job but when assholes come in who decide that theyre gonna take out all the anger on some innocent sever thats ****ing bullshit
i make $3.09 dollars an hour from the company and i bust my ass day in and day out trying to make good tips but every once and awhile i get some asshole who thinks im below him because i wait tables for a living
ive been stiffed a few times and the majority of the time its from jerks who get their rocks off by being assholes
i treat every table the same and i get good tips because of it but its people like you luckee who are pissed because they have to pay high prices for food or are pissed cause they know the have to tip and take it out on the server if you have issues about tipping just dont go to the resturant cook for your damn self or go to mcdonalds you aint gotta tip there
i know im rambling like but this topic has got me pissed off an experinced sever can tell within 2 mins what kind of tip there gonna get of a table and 9 out of 10 times theyre rightif your an ass as soon as they come to the table theyre gonna treat you like an ass and it becomes a vicious cycle you acted like an ass so you got treated like an ass since they treated you like an ass youre gonna act like an ass and so on and so forth
im done talking about this now cause its late and im angry but as an reference
Quality service= 20%
adaquate service=15%
o.k. to poor service=10%
if you feel that you wanna tip less than 10% ask for a manager
if you upset for any reason ask for a manager find out the situation before getting pissed off at the server
and also remember this food takes time to cook drinks take time to pour and you are not that servers only table
oh and one more thing waiting table does not only require simple organazational skills it takes tact, personallity, and food and drink knowledge
