There\'ll be reviews on ATi\'s new card very soon now and it\'ll be interesting to see what it can do... and before any nVidea zealots butt in - yes, we\'ll have to wait and see if they deliver as promised. :)
Here\'s an interesting article (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=4431).
-
ooo nice, 400mpps my card can only do 20mtps :crying:, and that fact that it requires its own power supply is just.....(oh i cant put it right).
*edit~ what the hell is Mpeg-4?*
-
I\'m pretty sure that if i saw that radeon running Doom III at full detail, I\'d have an orgasm, maybe two or three.
-
yes I\'m very interested in the 9700 (9 as in directX 9 compliant and 700 as in the memory speed).
specwise it is very good, up to 107 million transistors at 315Mhz. Matrox has 83 million and could only clock theirs up to 220Mhz.
But as too be expected nVidia will debut the nv30 chip soon which will be based partly on 3dfx\'s Rampage technoligy. So it will also be kick ass.
Decisions decisions, do I want Ati, Matrox or nVidia. ATi had bad drivers but the new Cataclysm drivers are supposed to be stable and good. Matrox has great features and top notch parts but is doing badly in the reviews and nVidia is well....nVidia.

I have high expectations for ATi\'s Radeon 9700.
If they already forcast 15,000 3DMarks standard without overclocking, thats a very, very high accomplishment. The 8500 series was between 9000-10,000, and with the 9700 making a huge leap to 15,000, thats a huge 5,000 point increase. Of course hardware limitations will come into play, but just to show the raw power, I\'m really excited.
The Radeon 8500, while not perfect, is still holding it\'s own even against the GeForce 4 at certain levels. ATi, while still having driver issues, released I think 2 really good driver sets? That\'s a first.
If they can release the 9700 and it has working functions (remember, when it shipped, Smooth Vision never worked) and easily out performs the GeForce Ti4600 at all levels, ATi is sitting pretty.
nVidia won\'t strike back with anything new on the market til X-mas (Q4) when it\'s expected they will release an "Ultra" version of their Geforce 4. Then NV30 will come in \'03 if I\'m not mistaken.
If the 9700 is a huge success, watch a real war take place, and I can\'t wait.

My current Radeon\'s been very good to me. I might wind up getting another.
-
Technology moves too fast I\'m still sittin here with a GeForce 2 GTS and have been thinking about the GeForce Ti 4600 but then I hear the 64mb versions of the Ti cards have faster ram than the 128mb version and now Nvidia\'s already working on the GeForce 5 which won\'t be too far away then there\'s Ati with their cards it\'s so hard to decided and the worst part is no matter what I buy there\'s still something better around the corner...why can\'t it be simple like in the old days.
-
When were the old days? Everything is always obsolete about a year afterwards.
-
Me got Ti4600 w/ my comp, me only want the best.

I mean in the beginning when companies were just getting into video cards sure they churned them out but the technology was still quite limited so it wasn\'t like a mega powerful card that would completely crush your current card was always around the corner back then the next card only pushed like 2,000 more poly\'s

OMFG, you better believe it!
http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1656
If you\'re too lazy to click the link, let me explain... In Unreal Tournament 2003 (DM-Antalus) running in 1600x1200 in high detail, the cards spanks Geforce 4 ti 4600 by a whopping 54%!
I\'m still reading, so expect more updates soon!

Then you should get Radeon 9700 instead. ;)
UPDATE: 50% faster than Geforce 4 Ti 4600 in Serious Sam in 1600x1200x32.
UPDATE: The price is about $399. The ATI Radeon 9000 Pro – aka The GeForce4 MX Killer in most situations - is about $129.
UPDATE: Beats Geforce 4 Ti 4600 with 37% in Quake 3: Arena @ 1600x1200x32.
UPDATE: At 1600x1200 with 4X AA enabled, the Radeon 9700 is 251% faster than the GeForce4 Ti 4600 (I\'m wetting myself here :p).
"The performance you’re paying for with the Radeon 9700 also buys you a card that will last you down the road. ATI has been running Doom3 on the Radeon 9700 for a while now, and Carmack has publicly thrown his support behind the card; keep in mind that it wasn’t too long ago that Carmack wouldn’t even touch the Radeon 8500 because of poor drivers. And for those of you that are wondering whether a 128MB card will be necessary, Doom3 will use at least 80MB of textures.
Our benchmarks from Unreal Tournament 2003 speak for themselves; the Radeon 9700 makes 1600x1200 a playable resolution and 4X AA something you can enable in any currently available game."
We\'ll have to wait for NV30 for nVidea to get the crown back. :)
-
dont forget yer comparing this card to one thats been out for a year
nvidia has more tricks up its sleeve than ATi could ever dream of
Based on the current specs of NV30, believe it or not, it will be faster than the Radeon 9700

Bah, you can whine all you want to. Newer card or not, it seems ATi has the crown now. Don\'t worry, it doesn\'t mean nVidea cards are bad... just accept it. :)

*points to mm\'s earlier statement about comparing cards that are new and old* :p
The NV30 won\'t be out before around the end of the year - november at the very earliest.
I\'m very excited about this. More competition means better products from BOTH ATi and nVidea. Something everyone should be interested in, company whores or not.
-
and when does the ati card come out?
This card will be fastest offering for this summer, er autumn, since this is when we expect it to see Radeon 9700 on the shelves
die ATi please, dont waste my time and someone else\'s money
ATi is like apple of the PC realm
will always play second fiddle to the big boy while matrox shivers in the closet
nvidia controls the market for a reason
look what they did to my beloved 3DFX
and since when does the fastest hardware = the best card?
PS2 > xbox, no?

Yeah, they put out a faster card. Oh yeah, that\'s what ATi is doing now.

PS2 > xbox, no?
We\'re talking about graphics cards, not consoles. PC gamers want to have the FASTEST cards to play their precious FPS in the highest possible framerate.
Besides, PS2 > Xbox is a moot point. It\'s all in the eyes of the beholder.
And quite frankly, saying that ATi should die is not only stupid, it\'s also ignorant. More competition and more choices is better for everyone. Even ignorant nVidea whores.
-
piss on ATi
they (like m$) tried to keep end users in the ice age, and look what happened. breaking off little bits of technology (cheese) to users (rodents) so they have to keep buying and buying and buying and buying
nvidia gave its users the most they could (within price reason) all at once, AND they did it by price ranges. GF mx, ti200, ti400
the SMALL minority of PC gamers that are capable of spending $400 on a vid card *laff* thats US prices too
nvidia will continue to dominate the market
just like creative labs, just like sony, just like intel, just like etc etc
better to be a devoted whore than a sheep that gets tricked and used at the latest headlines, no?
-
I don\'t mind if nVidia continues to dominate. As long as I have a better option people can buy Geforce all they like. :)
-
define better?
2 months after you crap away 400$, nvidia eats the field up?

I don\'t have time to list all the advantages right now, but basically it\'s faster than the fastest Geforce 4, it has new features, is DX9 compatible and all that... can list it for ya later if necessary.
But sure nVidea will show something faster. And then ATi will probably show something ever faster. Then nVidea again. Etc. Etc. But then you can wait forever.
I still don\'t get why you don\'t want nVidea to have competition, even if you plan on buying from them anyway.
-
Ehh, apparently mm hasn\'t read the Anandtech article.
It states, that NV30 isn\'t going to make it\'s debute til November 2002, and be shipped around January of 2003. That leaves the summer, autumn, and a little bit of winter for ATi to enjoy the speed crown.
By the time NV30 gets released, it will be faster than the 9700 (duh) but ATi\'s would have already have a refresh of the line ready, and awaiting the NV30 to stay competitive.
Did you take a look at how much better the 9700 is to the 4600 in UT2003? Q3? Jedi Knight? Serious Sam 2? And that\'s using beta drivers!
And the fact of the manner is this. Carmack endourced the 8500 now for Doom 3, and he\'s really excited bout the 9700.
!

Yes, thank you. I\'ll read more on the card later, but it sure sounds like a winner. I don\'t care if it says ATi or nVidea on the card, if it\'s good - it\'s good.
There\'s also a nice article on it here (http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/videocards/article.php/3211_1428871__2) - there\'s a chart comparing specs of Radeon 8500, 9700 and Ti 4600. Quite interesting.
-
Ati = shite
no amount of rambling and techspeak from you two will convince me otherwise
:P
-
hahahah, thats why I love you :D :D :D
-
Did they give any numbers on what they thought the initial price of the NV30 would be?
-
i would say $399
that seems to be the barrier
-
The real question is how much it will be from newegg.com b/c if I buy either one, that\'s where I\'ll get it.
-
i just go to bestbuy and steal them.
