New info on the Japanese hardware sales. It appears that Microsoft STILL hasn\'t sold its initial shipment of 250,000 Xbox\'s in Japan. Thats what, 4 months? Man..... I can\'t help but laugh. Sony sold that many PS2\'s in 4 hours... On the Nintendo side of things, it appears that they are still the biggest money making 1st party developer. Check the article out.

The launch of Xbox in Japan and the time since then has been an uphill struggle and, in a report from Reuters, the struggle was really put into perspective. According to Enterbrain, publisher of Famitsu and other Japanese magazines, Xbox sold 236,372 units from its launch on February 22nd to June 30th. In contrast, PlayStation 2 sales totaled 2.08 million for the period of January-June, a number that surpasses both Xbox and GameCube as the two systems combined sold 478,202 units during the period.
Analysts have attributed low sales to lack of games that appeal to Japan and, despite the May 22nd price cut down to 24,800 Yen, the system hasn?t moved its full launch shipment of 250,000 units in the region. Enterbrain?s report continued by stating that the top title for the first half of 2002 was Konami?s World Soccer Winning Eleven 6 on PlayStation 2. The game sold 974,605 units and, although boosted by the World Cup, Capcom?s Onimusha 2 followed closely with 963,529 units. Furtermore, it was revealed that Nintendo ranked in as the top developer for the first of half of the year in Japan with total sales of 2.55 million. Konami and Sega closely followed with 2.45 and 1.68 million respectively.
Enterbrain concluded it all by revealing that game console sales shot up 10.6 percent year-on-year to around 97.89 billion yen for the first half of the year. Software also saw an increase of 18.2 percent to 144 billion yen. The full report can be found by hitting the link above.

Xbox Struggles in Japan
Reported By Dennis Day
According to data released by Japanese research agency Media Create, sales of Microsoft\'s Xbox remain sluggish despite aggressive price cuts and a series of special events in the region. Since its launch in February through June 30, a total of 236,372 units have been sold. To put things into perspective, Sony sold nearly 2 million units of the PlayStation 2 during the same time period.
I figured I\'d post another URL, because I know certain members will start complaining how you got your information from a biased PS2-site.

I\'m not sure to take you serious or not. Either way, I sometimes question your ability to judge reality.

Honestly I still don\'t can\'t find a good reason to get an xbox I don\'t really like halo but that DOA volleyball game looks cool but I\'d never buy any console for one game it\'s just a waste. Maybe once it comes down to $50 I\'ll buy one used for $40
-
I have an Xbox but I use the hard drive to copy music and listen to it when I\'m playing my PS2. I\'m still waiting for some games to come out for the Xbox.
-
xbox doing sluggish in Japan is a nice way of putting it
I said before launch and it still fits
the xbox in Japan is about as popular as an O\'Henry bar in a public swimming pool
-
If you don\'t like HALO don\'t buy one. B/c I haven\'t found anything else on it I like.
-
Hmm.. Mebbe MS can save the xbox with this sweet looking watch?

-
I prefer digital watches but that\'s just me
-
Lets all hope it turns around so we can can have great games coming from all corners.
I know this is somewhat radical but hey that\'s just me.
To be honest all my systems have been idle for a while. I\'m not sure why but I\'ve been playing a lot less.

WHAT!?!?! XBox is failing in Japan? No way! I am so glad you brought us this surprising news! None of us had no idea of this happening.
In reality, I would love to see XBox end up with about 2 million consoles in Japan by the end of it\'s life. If they can do that, combined with a nice USA and a decent European base, developers will stick with it, and I will keep getting some classic titles. XBox needs it\'s high profile Japanese game, hopefully it finds it sooner than later for Japan\'s sake.

xBOX has been doing bad since it\'s launch in japan so this is old news. Ooops!! I came out of my cave:D
-
How can any console survive with (extremly) poor sales in Japan? I tell you one cannot one simply cannot. The clock is ticking toward midnight...tick tock tick tock...and when it hits 12:00..something goes into a long quite sleep
-
Personally, I\'d already be suprised if they managed to get their initial shipment sold by the end of its lifespan........
-
I hope that\'ll be you :D
j/k (?)
-
How will xbox survive?
The will that it be so backed by unlimited funds
MS has both
for now
-
So if it had to be anything, what would finally make Microsoft pull the plug on the ol\' X-Box?

If x box live fails I think thats when they will pull the plug. Honestly, who would want to see x box go on but nintendo become 3rd party? Not me

Thats the funnyest thing i have heard all year
If being out Sold by the PS2 at 44 to 1 is a Success then i woulden\'t want to see your idea of a "a Complete and total rout"
Now Quddus you person of poor Music Taste please rearange this into a well know saying.
XFlops..The....Sell..Europe...Can\'t...In...Japan.....Save..to...Self

Wow. I have never seen so many people so afraid of a gaming console........
-
"So if it had to be anything, what would finally make Microsoft pull the plug on the ol\' X-Box"
Good question Tom. I don\'t think the failure of xbox-live would be enough. Say xbox gets outsold by PSone this coming Nov-Dec, I\'m not saying it will happen but it is quite possible. It would then be obvious to nearly everyone any objectives MS had planned with the release of xbox were done for. Even if such a pathetic scenario took place I wouldn\'t put it past MS to stick it out long enough to launch xbox2.

NPYYZ,
Huh? PS2 killa

The Xbox is one of the most success U.S.A system in Japan. Averaging 3,000 in hardware sales a month in Japan (or was it a week?) I don\'t know but it\'s still a great system. :P
-
Yeah x box is the most succesfull USA console in Japan.
Now how many USA consoles have been released in Japan?
-
Its a shame its not doing so well i want it to suceed; but lets face facts the xbox graphically produces the prettiest games i have ever seen on a console but they are the most boring piece of crap to play.example the new bruce lee game is a waste of time its the games that break the system get those developers to make some good software and xbox will sell . They need a good fighter a good rpg morewind doesnt count because thats a pc rpg
different people play pc rpg a good platformer and they are in buisness its not the pretty pictures we want we want games that imerse us in there world make us drool to play it like final fantsay 7 dang the graphics the hieght of cheesy. the games story line had me hooked like a crack addict on friday night microsoft are you listening

Dont make me laugh. Even so, it cannot outsell playstation 2 on a weekly basis. That\'s sad coming from a system that would destroy PS2.
A great system? To a select few. A failure? To the business world.

Errrmm... wait a tick. Are you trying to tell me that the Sega Mega Drive was a complete flop because it tanked in Japan?

In short no
-
Wow. I have never seen so many people so afraid of a gaming console........
What? Were afraid? Thats so good news afraid of X-Box you know its deadly? All 9 pounds of it from a windows could hurt ya know :)
j/k ;)
-
In short no - Clowd
No? No what? No you aren\'t going to tell me that? No the Mega Drive wasn\'t a failure despite it\'s bombing in Japan? No that it wasn\'t a success? Clarify, cause as it stands your contridiction just destroys your post that I quoted. How could the MegaDrive have been a success if consoles that tank in Japan have no hope of survival?
-
Well Bill Gates placed a 3.5 billion loss allowance on Xbox. So far it is projected to lose about 2bil into summer 2003.
As it completely loses Japan it loses most of the game developers so I guess it has no chance. It sucks anyway, a bunch of hype. If you disagree, do some research on its components especially it\'s so amazing 750mhz chip (cheap POS).
I want it to fail A) **** Gates and MS and B) Get Sega to make PS2 games and C) Give Gamecube more market share
-
The Mega Drive was not a flop, but Sega and Microsoft are facing two completely different situations:
- Microsoft is an American company.
- The support from Japanese developers is still quite weak
- The market has grown bigger.
- Sales are very weak, despite its low price tag
I do agree however that you don\'t need to do well Japan in order to succeed. Although... it depends really what the Japanese developers think and if they\'ll support a dead-(American)-console overthere in the long run...

Successful because the LAST US console was the 3DO
:laughing::laughing::laughing:
Mean while the Playstation 2 is selling weekly somewere between 20,000 and 60,000 a WEEK
yup the "Console war" is Over for the Xflops

uGh , the 3DO
great console
no sales and hardly any A+ titles killed it
sounds like some other console i know
hmmmm

Thanks seven  I, and everyone else with half a brain know the reasons.. but that question was directed at Clowd becaue I wanted to hear HIS response. To see if HIS argument held any water (which it dosen\'t). Now all he\'s gonna do is copy your post and dodge the question.
-
argh, sorry about that. I admit, I didn\'t pay much attention when I replied, just taking part in the debate. :(
And quite honestly, I don\'t even care if Clowd would have been able to answer that question or not. I even have my doubts that he would have replied if I hadn\'t.
Anyway, the real reason why I did make a reply is because you brought up some very interesting points with the MegaDrive. It obviously didn\'t do very well in Japan, so the question is, why did it still get the support from them? Because Sega is a Japanese company? Because it did well elsewhere? Because the market wasn\'t big enough then to just jump console? Or because of other reasons?
Now, the final question is, what will Japanese developers do if Xbox completely dies overthere? Will they keep supporting it? Or, how good would sales elsewhere have to be that they don\'t just dump it?
It\'s very speculative, I agree - but quite interesting as I do believe the Japanese developers will play a very big role in the future success of Microsoft in this industry. What are your thoughts?

Wait wait wait waitwaitwaitwait!
Xbox still has a lot of work to do in Japan before it catches the 3DO :)

I could be wrong here, but doesn\'t the U.S. make up just a little less than half of the 20 billion dollar videogame industry?
I think that warrants enough reason to develope for the Xbox...but of course focus on more widely accepted consoles.<---That\'s what will always keep Xbox in 2nd or 3rd place.
-
Need for speed on 3DO rulez. No platform i\'ve played it on has ever come as close to the 3DO version..
As for xbox. I don\'t care, i don\'t have one. I\'ve already updated my pc.. "xbox isn\'t a pc moron, It\'s a console"
Ohh..
-
Sonyfan - I dont know what the mega-drive is. And if it bombed in Japan but was succesful elswhere Im sure it didnt last long. My argument is that if a console doesnt get good sales in Japan its outlook for the future is dim. aka Dreamcast
-
Megadrive=Genesis
It didn\'t do very well in Japan, but thrived in the U.S. Third Party support was still great...granted that was then. It was only Super Nintendo vs. Genesis...
Now, there are 3 consoles on the market so developers have a choice. It makes sense to go with PS2, but is it worth it to invest time and money into GC and/or Xbox also?
U.S. Xbox> GC
Europe GC> Xbox...not sure about this one
Japan GC> Xbox
in regards to sales
If I\'m not mistaken, U.S. has become a strong force for sales and has picked up on the development side of things too.
Xbox has no future in Japan, but I do believe that the support it\'s garnered in the U.S. will carry it on...
-

So we can, in other words, look fowards to lots of more PC ports?
American Developers are mostly PC developers.. and since the xbox is so similar to a PC, thats what its been getting.. and thats what it will continue to get.
-
No, Chrono...I wasn\'t hinting at that.
I was suggesting that since the U.S. is such a large part of the game industry that having success in this one territory will be enough reason to continue development. Though not as a primary focus...
American developers are coming around...I believe Acclaim(Turok was made right here in Austin), Retro Studios (Also Austin based I believe), Silicon Knights, Bungie, etc. are talented and just the tip of the iceberg.
-

First of all, thanks for the mature reply :)
Second of all, you can have Akk-lame
Silicon Knights made one great game.. sadly it took then 5 great years.
Bungie made one great game, AKA Halo, but once again thats on the PC also.
so.. umm, like what am I expecting on the xbox.
1st party = MS trying to continue their PC series on the xbox
2nd party = Bungie.. which might make a good game every few years
3rd party = a collection of 3rd rate american developers, with a gem here and there.
I guess if you like PC style games, you will like the xbox.
Sadly, the PC itself provides a much broader selection of games, with more options such as a keyboard and mouse.
-
hmmmmmmmm, mouse/kb combo
/me feels warm all over
-
Also, sega in regards to the USA situation and not doing too hot in japan.
1st of all, it did ok in japan.. but not as well in the USA.
The xbox on the other hand has yet to outsell the 3do
2nd of all, Sega had Sega, while MS has virtually no system seller 1st party. Sega was able to make games that sold systems to americans, and MS is not doing that.
-
First of all, thanks for the mature reply
Why does that feel like an insult?:(

You missed my point...where were these developers last generation? (That\'s just a few examples, and fyi, Turok was a pretty good game)
It use to be that all the triple A titles or anything worth playing came from Japan. That looks to be changing as talent is popping up here in the U.S. too...
-
Sega was able to make games that sold systems to americans, and MS is not doing that.
Did Sega manage all this within the first 9 months? I think MS is extremely focused on the U.S. market and their lineup shows that.
Doesn\'t want to make list...
-
Why does that feel like an insult?
Actually, I was being nice :)
that was meant as a compliment
When you see those titles, let me know. I\'m going to go back to playing the games that are out now, and that will come out this fall. And of that list, the xbox is not on it. If, by some chance I could find 3 titles worth owning on the xbox, I might buy one.. but its not happening. Its been how many months, and only one AAA title?!? come on now.. the year mark is approaching!
People said the ps2 had a draught after launch, however thats nothing compared to the xbox post launch draught. Where the ps2 had alot of great titles its 2nd season, the xbox has just a few exclusive titles worth owning..
Perhaps i\'m being too hard on the xbox, but after all the hype ms created. Should I be?
-
Did Sega manage all this within the first 9 months? I think MS is extremely focused on the U.S. market and their lineup shows that.
No, but was sega up against 2 companies with great footholds. Nintendo is bringing out the guns, what does MS have to counter?
we already know what sony has this fall.. once again, what does MS have to counter?
Doesn\'t want to make list...
Make it, and don\'t include PC titles or ports, otherwise you will proove my point for me
-
Its been how many months, and only one AAA title?!? come on now.. the year mark is approaching!
You have to keep in mind, and I remind myself, that this is MS\' first venture into videogames. I\'ll admit right up front that they were ill-prepared...however it looks to be changing.
Personally, I\'m looking forward to Brute Force, Unreal Championship, Whacked, Sega GT 2002, Blinx, Unseen, Crimson Skies, Fable, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Strident...
I know it remains to be seen whether the above turn out to be worth owning, but it looks like MS is making an effort whether it be first party or securing rights for exclusive third party titles.
-
that this is MS\' first venture into videogames
no, theyve been dumping thier crap titles on the PC market for years
-
well Ginko, I just hope you have a secondary plan.
Your tone has thus far changed over recent months, perhaps your not as single minded as I once thought.
After getting a gamecube I pretty much quit caring as to what happens.. tonight I decided to come on and post.. not sure why yet, its just one of those nights I guess :)
Frankly, with a list like this i\'m not sure why I would need a xbox even if it had some titles worth owning.
Chrono\'s Game list for this fall
8/13 Madden 2k3
8/26 Super Mario Sunshine
8/26 Super Monkey Ball 2
8/27 SOCOM
8/27 Network Adaptor
9/15 Grandia X
9/15 Wild Arms 3
9/15 Sly Cooper
9/23 Star Fox Adventures
9/24 TimeSplitters 2
10/1 Resident Evil 2
10/1 Legend of Legaia
10/14 Kingdom Hearts
10/21 Mario Party 4
10/21 Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
10/29 Jet X20 PS2
11/05 Resident Evil 0
11/05 Tony Hawk\'s Pro Skater 4
11/11 Wario World GC
11/12 Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness
11/15 Suikoden 3
11/15 Ratchet and Clank
11/18 Metriod Prime
12/01 Resident Evil 3
12/? Star Ocean 3
12/14 The Getaway
12/15 Dark Cloud 2
Unknown Dates/Undecided
Auto Modellista
ATV Offroad Fury 2
Shinobi
Zone of Enders 2
11/05 Spyro
11/15 DDR Max
Its going to be difficult to narrow that list down..
-
Consoles, we\'re talking consoles!!!
They haven\'t owned up to the hype, but then who has?
Nintendo is bringing out the guns, what does MS have to counter?
They\'re only considered "big guns" because they\'re are well established franchises. MS doesn\'t have that...
I ask you, honestly what do you expect MS to do that haven\'t done already?
-
well Ginko, I just hope you have a secondary plan.
Your tone has thus far changed over recent months, perhaps your not as single minded as I once thought.
I don\'t need a secondary plan...I have an Xbox, PS2, and soon to be GC.
My list consist of a few titles spread across each system...that\'s besides the point.
oh, and I may have been a bit biased but I\'ve always approached arguements from a subjective pov. Alot of people here ignore it though...bet you wouldn\'t believe me if I told you I\'m considered a PS2 fanboy at TXB forums would you?;)
-
bet you wouldn\'t believe me if I told you I\'m considered a PS2 fanboy at TXB forums would you?
Actually I would belive you,
I bet they think the forum graphics are ps2 fanboys
-
A few months ago I would have laughed, but ever since I decided to start posting there again I\'ve noticed a change.
Granted, there are a much greater number of members there so of course come the idiots...but there are some awesome TXB members worth having debates with.
-
How come all the threads in this forum all contain the same arguments?
