Title: Can I Play Music CDs on the Game Cube?
Post by: Coke on July 19, 2002, 11:07:43 PM
The ps1 and ps2, and the x-box, and a PC can all play Music, but can a game cube?

Seriously... i like some of the games on the cube, but why is it missing thses features? (eg DVD player..etc..)

Some people have stated in the other debate we had, that it wouldnt be a good idea for nintendo to go the same way as Playstation and x-box...but why??

If the system is better and its got more..or atleast some cool features.. well i think they\'d sell more nintendos!!!

well coke, like bob said~no the GC cant play music cds, unless u can find me an "mini cd" but even if u could i hardly doubt that nintendo have made their console to play anything other than GC games.
coz as mentioned in yer previous thread "the GC is a pure gaming machine" ;)

It\'s cheap, I don\'t care. Besides, I already have a DVD player.

It doesn\'t play CDs because the tray isn\'t big enough for them.  Panasonic made one you can import if you want, but chances are you already have a CD player, so it\'s not an issue, anyway.

It does play games, though, and that\'s why I bought mine.

This is just a stupid question to stir up the people who actually enjoy their gaming machines.  Oh yes, it doesn\'t play CD\'s, but I\'m sure, probably in every entertainment hub of your household, you have CD players regardless.  Off hand, I have roughly 7 CD players in my household comprised of Discmen, alarm clock radios, and CD changer stereos.  For some funny reason, I like the fact that I can watch TV and listen to music at the same time.  Sometimes during sports, the announcers are just awful and a little music drowns them out nicely.  :)

Coke,  look at it from Nintendo\'s point of view.  If your targeted audience was 9 year olds,  why put all that extra DVD cd stuff in your console when you know they dont care about it?

Somewhat of a good point clowd...

Do take a look from Nintendo\'s point of view.  What is Nintendo\'s goal?  To deliver games to the masses...giving you another way to play a CD doesn\'t factor in here.

Also, I\'m just curious.  How many of you actually use your videogame console as a means to play CDs?  not me

The only CD-based console I\'ve owned is the DC. I hate to break it to ya, but in the year I had it.. I only used it to play a music CD once. That one time coming when I was as bored as heck; I just wanted to see the quality.

So Clowd + Coke = GTFO.

The only console i ever use to listen to cd\'s is my ps1 because it has cool "lightning" and sound options. But still, that\'s very rare, usually I just use my stereo.

The same goes for me.  I have a psx, and I never use it to listen to CDs.  Why would you?  The sound quality would be so much lower than a normal CD player.  No one uses the option, so it\'s pretty much just an extra feature that perhaps costs more money to put in and to purchase, but is never used.

Becasue thats the opposite direction that all good companies will take, in regards to game SYSTEMS evolution. (wait till nintendo release their next CONSOLE...im sure they\'ll put one in it...LOL!!!)

Ps1, Ps2, X-box and EVEN dreamcast all play music cds...so why wont nintendo??

Can anyone answer this question!!!? ....other than saying the classic nintendo fanboy responce: "i dont want to do that" or "Why would i want to do that?"
I, me, myself and others want to do it! ..so why cant nintendo support such a BASIC feature??

Im waiting for some responces!!!....  :))

Nintendo set out to deliver games...they also wanted to go with a cheaper medium than cartridges and prevent piracy.  The minidisk was a great way to go. Adding in a CD player to this would have costs more money, no?

And being that it\'s more than likely an extremely under utilized part of Xbox or PS2, they probably didn\'t even think twice about adding it.

GCN hardware designer: Some guy that doesn\'t know what he\'s talking about on the PlayStation2 Central forums says that we should put a CD player into the GameCube!

Assistant: PlayStation2 Central forums? Errr, yeah.. you mean on the internet or what..?

GCN hardware designer: Yes, we must add a CD player immediately! How much will it cost us?

Assistant: Well, we\'ll have to redo the system entirely and manufacture it wasting millions.. and it wouldn\'t fit into Nintendo\'s philosophy of having a small, efficient console.. and we\'d have to redo the BIOS, and we\'d also have to-

GCN hardware designer: *cuts in* CONSOLES NEED A CD PLAYER SO LETS GO MAKE COKE HAPPY!!!!!!!

Remind me why Clowd\'s troll avatar was taken away? The boy is a rambling idiot and a troll.

No it doesn\'t play cds and you damn well knew this, so please don\'t try and act like this was a legit question. You even bitched about this in the previous thread - so your attempt at acting like you wasn\'t just trying to bring up the same topic with a different phrase will not work. We are smarter than that.

I\'m sorry, but we live in the year 2002 and cd players are friggin\' everywhere and the mere fact that you are worried that it doesn\'t play them is absurd. One would hope you have a cd player somewhere in your house . Go buy a stand alone cd player for $25 bucks. The same with a DVD player.

And there is something else you don\'t understand. The tray won\'t hold one. Why? Because Nintendo is using a propertary format. A mini-DVD that only works on the GC. The tray is only big enough for this disc. Why? Because if you could fit a regular music cd in the tray, than you could fit a CD-R. And if you can fit a CD-R in the tray, then you can pirate games. And if you can fit something of that size in the tray - then most likely it means it will read the disc of that size. And if it reads the disc of that size, it means it can be tricked into a reading a...CD-R. So what is the solution? Use a mini-disc and make the tray small. That way no one can fit a CD-R in it and there is no question on if the thing can even read a CD-R, because it can\'t even play music cds. Now, I\'m sure the was the most simplistic way to explain that and there is a bunch of other techincal reasons , but lets not overwhelm your brain all at once.

As for Clowd, we are all glad you found someone at the same level. Someone who can understand your limited view on the industry and act like they have a clue.

No chippy, its not absurd. I didnt have a CD player or a DVD player till i got my ps2. Actully i really couldn\'t decide if i should get a ps2 or wait for the gamecube to come out. But when i was alerted to the features, (or should i say lack there of!) that the game cube has; it was an easy decision. I wasnt aware fully if it could or could not play music, but i knew for sure it cant play DVDs.

Here are some facts fo you chippy: The gaming industry is moving forward. It more than a seperate peice of equipment we plug in to play games. Its evolution man! The course of evolution states: Adapt or DIE!!!
Nintendo has had its glory days.... its had its 15 minutes of fame. But it time to start to think in the present. The present where the console is  a thing of that past. Today, its gaming SYSTEMS that are the new. (hey maybe your a 60 year old man who isnt used to change chippy, its ok...we understand)

It cannot be denied that this is the way of the future lets have a look at some figures:

Current % of next-generation hardware market (as of May,2002):
PS2 -- 71%
XBX -- 16%
GCN -- 13%

Cumulative sales total as of May, 2002
PS2 -- 9,200,000
XBX -- 2,118,000
GCN -- 1,682,000

There you go, evidence that the general population DEMANDS that their systems have:

** CD player abilites
** DVD playback

The future of systems is UNDENIABLE, you either integrate or become instinct.

Can you buy a stereo for $10 + leads, speakers etc?????..LOL

only 71%?!?!? Gee, even NES in it\'s heyday had a good 90% stranglehold over the US industry!

PS2 had no competition for over 1 year after it\'s release. Dreamcast was selling here and there, but not enough to keep up with even the PSX! I think it is pretty good that GC and XBox took away 30% already, hopefully more and more gets chipped away and the other two get left with about 25% each. That would be nice.

Actually no. Go read any NES hardware, SMS hardware, or 7800 hardware FAQ available and i am SURE that somewhere in there they will talk about how NES had 90% of the market, SMS and 7800 split the other 10%, presumably 8% and 2% respectively.

AB is correct.. the NES did have a whopping 90% of the console market during the 8-bit days.

yeah, you read it as it fell out of his arse

regardless, it makes no difference,  the market is 298742396 times different than it was, what, over 15 years ago?

70% of "todays" market is a staggering percentage, and the PS2 is selling exponentially to xbox + gc

You don\'t think that the fact that PS2 came out quite a while before the others has anything to do with that, do you?

And if you\'re trying to defend X-Box, take a look at the sales figures in Japan.

You didn\'t have a CD player until you got a PS2?  That\'s sad.  If you still don\'t have another one, get one.  PS2 sound quality for CDs isn\'t great.

Adapt or die?  They are just targetting a different audience by not adding on useless things that the majority wouldn\'t use, and thus keeping cost down.  What\'s wrong with that?

Well the statistics i have provided evidently show otherwise!

The majority are not purshasing the nintendo system as much as the others that have DVD and CD music playback. Is it a coincidence?..i think not!!  :)

If there are no \'goodies\' the masses speak with their feet and wallets....thats a fact!! :)

The statistics you provided suggest people want the console with the mose GAMES, not the most features.

PS2 has the most games = PS2 has the majority of the market
XBox has the second most games = Xbox has the second \'strongest\' standing in the market.
GameCube has the least = GameCube has the least holding in the market.

It has nothing to do with the features.

Many things can have an effect on sales.  Find something that points directly to these numbers being caused by the lack of features on Gamecube, then maybe you\'ll have an arguement.

Coke, you didn\'t buy a Gamecube because it wasn\'t a DVD or CD player, but you bought a PS2 because it was.  Fine.  You enjoy your PS2, I\'ll enjoy both.  Just don\'t come crying to us when the really good games on the Cube start coming out and you can\'t play them because the PS2\'s CD tray is just too big for them.
