What verion is that? My linux knowledge is not very good...
Looks very nice tho. If only they had the game support Windows (ugh) does.

Redhat 7.3
any Id game (quake 2, Quake 3, RTCW) and most games that use its engines (SOF 1 and 2, Jedi Knight 2) and Unreal and Unreal Tournament wun perfectly fine under linux
although i wish more devs would support linux, doom 3 will come to linux and thats all that matters
-
Had any problems or crashes yet mm?
:)
-
I like how KDE has become so much more mature in recent years, I used to run Red Hat 5 and 6, but rarely used that partition so I went to a Windows only drive. But lately I\'ve been getting the urge to run a different OS
-
doom 3 on linux, without windows sapping resources = teh shit
-
it detected all my hardware just like windows would, so no problems there
not a single hiccup since i really started playing around with it
everything is open source in linux
there\'s no hidden source code, no registry, no m$ proprietary bullshit
support for all games is the only thing holding me back from switching over entirely
-
here\'s my desktop

mm. what exactly is the deal with linux anyway? could you explain a little more to a neophyte?
-
linux = open source Operating System
kinda like windows but ummmm, free and without the arcane licensing tactics
you can just download the disk images, install, and boom ya got an OS
http://www.linux.org will get ya tons more info
Linux is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world. Developed under the GNU General Public License , the source code for Linux is freely available to everyone.
but its NOT for noobs
its not like you can download any little program off the internet and install it. basically everything has to be done manually. but linux becomes more and more automated everyday as more and more people install it and perfect the source code
-
I had a Linux box running for a while... but I got tired of it and switched back to Windows. :(
It\'s cool though if you want to discover a whole new world of geekness. :)
-
Now that i got everything switched over to my new system, I\'m going to take my old computer and pop Linux Mandrake 6.5 on it temporarilly so that I can learn the in\'s and out\'s of it. Then I figure later on when I get a new system and a good PC emulator for playing Dos games on Win2k comes out (I expecially like the fact that under emulation you don\'t get runtime errors! :D ) I\'ll set my system up as a dual boot between Win2k and whatever newer version of Linux I can get my hands on.
BTW: MM, you need to change that "Trash" icon from a Trashcan to a Windows Logo. :p

Welcome to the club, mm.
The only thing I don\'t like about konq is that is sometimes plays the .gif avatars of the people here on the forums very fast and eats up cpu.
On a side note, if you haven\'t you should install gkrellm, it rocks. Add the IceWalkers tab to Mozilla, and download lbreakout2.
Oh yeah and go here for all things KDE:
http://www.kde-look.org
-
I\'ll probably get it for PS2 when the price goes down.
-
i prefer windows. if linux had better support. I\'d use that instead. but till then.. windows is my os "sigh"
-
I use Windows because I have to(not literally, but because of the programs I use) not because I want to. If developers were 100% Linux too, I\'d damn sure be using that.
-
You can have Windows and Linux on the same computer, right?
-
yes, you can dual boot

Yeah, on different partions of your hard drive.
-
I\'ve heard multiple OS in different partitions may produce so many errors... is that true?
-
I have a dual boot Windows ME/XP Professional on my puter.
Haven\'t gotten any errors.
-
it can only produce user errors

man why even bother with that ME bullshit i had it for like 6 months and i thought i was gonna kill myself

Windows likes to be on the primary partition of any drive. Usually if you install it there, there are no problems.
-
I hate using multiple OS.. I had 98SE and 2000 on my machine at one time.. I was using 2000 for the internet and for normal use of programs. I was using 98 for gaming. Once i got Xp i didn\'t find any need for it. Infact i\'ve installed BOTH OS on the same partition and had no errors. :)
-
thats the most retarded thing ive ever heard
thats defeats the entire purpose of dual booting

Cool. I want to put XP on my computer but keep on 98SE for what my mom uses it for. What if I were to put a second harddrive? Could I put XP on the new one or does that not work?
-
yes, you can do that OR you can partition room on yer current HD if you have a large enough drive
-
20 Gigs big enough? :)
-
for yer OS partition yes
partition the rest of the drive into another drive
always best to give an OS its own partition
-
try using partition magic, it\'s great for those who are new to partitioning, very user friendly.
-
I\'m not saying that I\'m going to do it, I was pondering doing it. My mom was wondering a while back if it was possible. I knew it was but I was wondering how to do it. Thanks guys. I want to update to XP and my mom wanted to keep things on 98. If I were to upgrade to XP, would all the files still be there or no?
-
Well, I can\'t say everything works w/ XP that I have, and WinME is a tad faster for me than XP.
mm makes it sound like he has never used ME before, concidering the fact he was raging bout how XP stunk and what not :D Now look at him, on XP and bashing ME.
heh, don\'t I make things a little interesting??
-
jm, just imagine me ripping the clothes off yer avatar and

I don\'t think mm was bashing you ;) j/k. I know what you meant. I guess you learn to love your OS.
-
Hmm.. Ive been thinking of installing Linux on my laptop, but I never got around to download it.
I was thinking of trying Linux and Lindows. :)
-
I\'ve never really seen the need to run 2 versions of Windows on 1 machine. If you\'re running 2k or XP all your software should be supported. Emphasis on should.

I\'m bored

It makes sence to have Win98 and Win2k on the same machine if you\'re into old games since Win2k\'s Dos Emulation sucks ass. But it\'s a pain switching back and forth everytime you wanna switch between a Dos based and a Windows based game.
....
I never tried it.. but I wonder if you could have both Dos 6.22 and Win2k runnin on the same machine?
-
what\'s linux\'s flagship OS at the moment?
-
AHAHAHAHHAHAa
ahhhh, I wish Linux had a single flagship OS.
there\'d be a helluva lot less trouble then.
there\'s like 1982736 major builds!!!!!!!!
just pick any one of those.....
-
and they all better than windows?
well I guess having so many OS\'s is a problem for developers.
-
Just get Mandrake... that\'s the one I\'ve been using, and it was great (AND userfriendly - it found all my hardware just like Win). Cost me like 10 bucks (and legally of course :)).
-
unless you have a software modem..bastards....

Linux IS the OS; there\'s no such thing as an OS within an OS unless you count emulation. The desktops worth looking into are KDE, gnome, blackbox, and Windowmaker and probably in that order.

Sammy, there\'s no way in hell you can pirate Linux, cuz the GNU License ENCOURAGES free distribution. If anything, you were ripped off. :)
And EMP, we know what he meant, stop being nitty picky.
-
yes, Linux = free (for download)
when you buy it in the store, you get it pressed onto a cd, a manual, and normally 30 days tech support (email)

Duh, I know that. But seeing as how I bought it online and it was two CD\'s + shipping, it wasn\'t bad at all.
