Hi! I havent posted in this forum in ages! I see there\'s still a lot of the \'ol posters from long ago wich is a good thing. Anyways here\'s my thread:
I currently finished Shenmue 2 for my DC and i was blown away by the game. This game story and themes moved me in a way no other videogame has done since FF7, Lunar, SUikoden I and a few other compelling rpg classics of the mid or late 90\'s.
What really got my attention is that this game has a real mature feeling about it. The pacing is slow and calculated, there\'s a lot of japanese philosophies involved, values, characters seem to care for one another and there\'s no real bad evil guys or good "i will rescue the world" guys either. It\'s almost like real life in this game, everybody acts according to their personality. You even have to search for partime jobs to get money. You just dont find money and powerups in random crates and boxes.
What im getting at is that this game IMO is much more mature than Resident Evil for example. There\'s a lot of "mature" rated games that seem pretty childish to me. Blood and guts, crude language, polygonal breasts, etc doesnt make a game Mature IMO on the contrary these are just gimmicks to attract gamers into thinking they are playing something "mature" when they\'re really not .
The number of people u kill in SHenmue 2 is 0. Yup the bodycount is 0. I think this is the first third person adventure/action game where u dont kill anything. I think when u play this game (and few other quirky games) u will realize the endless posibilities videogames could offer. Genres that have never been done before can be made. A game like State of emergency isnt that mature IMO.
How about a videogame comedy? A game where u play a doctor! Some of these original ideas could sound stupid at first but who would\'ve tought making a fat italian plumber jump into a turtles head would end up being fun?
Some more non traditional games are needed and as a 22 year old gamer who has been playing games since i was 2 years old im frankly getting bored of games where A button is to shoot/punch, B is button is for kicks/jumps, etc. I still love these games as much as the next guy but i think people should start supporting non tradional games more so we can really get something new instead of the same \'ol stuff packed differently. Mature games just doesnt have to include bloody fatalities, poligonal panties, and other gimicky stuff they could be so much more. What do u think?

[Dr. Evil]Riiiiiiiiiiight.[/Dr. Evil]

Speaking of Dr. Evil... That guy is hella funny. GOLD MEMBER!!!! IN THEATERS TONIGHT! YAY. for me at least.. :D
Edit: Silly me, forgot my opinion. Blood&guts + violence + sexuality = mature, it will always be like that. Just like movies. :nut:
-
Leisure Suit Larry, the only game in my opinion that deserves that title.
-
lol, man, that game is stupid.
-
In a game I\'d rather kill someone and take there money then go get a part time job.Geez how real do you want? Maybe a Burger King game and you get paid $0.05 per hour and you can ask if they want fries with that?
On a side note did you know in Australia Burger King is Hungry Jacks?? what the hell is with that??? On the bottom of a Hungry Jacks bag it still has Burger King so why??????

Stuff like this ;)

I think this should be in Console Discussion...

Yea, lol. I\'ve been to the land of the Aussies twice and I still haven\'t figured it out.

Jeesus Astro.. I live in BFE Indiana where we barely get any video games at all.. and if we do it\'s usually Sony products.. and yet I got Shenmue 2 way before you did. What\'s you\'re excuse?? We should string you up and have Altered beat you with a rubber hose. Christ dood, couple more weeks and the Xbox version would be out. ;)
Anyhow.. as far as you points..

Agreed. The storyline is top notch. In Shenmue 1, it was marred by horrible voice acting which really destroyed the sence of atmosphere it built up imo. In Shenmue 2, you didn\'t have that problem. It was all subtitled.. which I think they should have done with Shenmue 1 also. Hearing them speak in Japaneese really helped set the mood. It\'s like, if they had used some cheese Native American accents for the Souix in Dances with Wolves.. the movie probably wouldn\'t have made such an impact on many people. It\'s a mark of sophistication.. which I\'ll get to later. I guess if you wanna get picky, you could bytch about how everyone in Hong Kong China speaks perfect Japaneese.. but to my untrained gaijun ears, it\'s all oriental sounding to me. They couldda been speaking Vietnameese for all care.

Big knockers, lots of blood, cursing, implied sexual innuendos.. those are marks of a mature game. There\'s a huge difference between mature content and sophistication. Just becaue a game lacks sophistication and culture, dosen\'t mean it\'s appropriate for children or any less appealing to adults.

Tru.. but how many people do you beat to edge of death? How many people did Ryo probably put in the hospital. Jus because there\'s no death, dosen\'t mean there\'s any less violence in this title. The game just dosen\'t revolve AROUND violence like so many other do. Actually, I was dissapointed a bit in this title since it seemed like fighting was much more a part of the gameplay than the original.
I think this is the first third person adventure/action game where u dont kill anything. - Astro
I can make a list longer than than this thread just of Adventure games where you don\'t kill anyone. And if you do, it\'s simply the finale to the game... and really.. there isn\'t even much action involved in it at all.
I think when u play this game (and few other quirky games) u will realize the endless posibilities videogames could offer. Genres that have never been done before can be made. - Astro
I think Seaman and Samba De Amigo are better examples. Shenmue\'s genre has been done to death actually. :D
How about a videogame comedy? - Astro
Again, I could probably make a list as long as this thread full of comedy games. Jus off the top of my head, try; The Monkey Island Series, Sam & Max Hit the Road, Leisure Suit Larry Series, Legend of Kyrandia Series, Les Manly Series, Leather Godesses of Phobos, Freddy Pharcus Frontier Pharmasis, Willy Beamish, and the Space Quest Series.
A game where u play a doctor! - Astro
There\'s already been one made. Try the Emergency Room series for the PC. It\'s a game where you play a surgeon and must evaluate patient correctly and administer the proper medication and/or operate on them.
but who would\'ve tought making a fat italian plumber jump into a turtles head would end up being fun? - Astro
Shegiro Myamoto(sp?) :D

Sounds to me like you just need to get away from console gaming for awhile. Many of these "new ideas" and "innovations" have been around for a very VERY long time on the PC. Like.. well.. Shenmue for example. It\'s an Adventure/Action game... although a slightly different breed of adventure that replaces item puzzles with dialog puzzles. If you want games like it.. then look for PC adventure titles from Interact, Sierra, Dynamix, and LucasArts. The Zork Series is also a legendary series that should not be missed. Most of the newer Adventure games are hybrids.. mostly with a bit of action in them like Kings Quest 8 (Cough* Tomb Raider in Daventry *Cough) and Quest for Glory 5 (Adventure/RPG). Try the older titles for a more true "pure" adventure experience. I think you\'ll find that even Shenmue\'s realtime day-night/weather transitions and impressive interaction have been done already.. sometimes as far back as the 80\'s or even before.
Oh.. and you should also try CountDown, Martain Memorandum, Mean Streets, and LucasArt\'s The Dig.
BTW: I think that if you\'ll go through and play all those titles, I think you\'ll find that as an adventure game.. Shenmue fails pretty badly. It\'s story line is top-notch yes, but it\'s adventure elements are weak as hell.. and it\'s fighting elements are too few and far between to support the game on. For a console adventure.. it works wonders. As a member of the same Genre as Gabriel Knight, Leisure Suit Larry, Monkey Island, The Grim Fedango, and The Longest Journey.. it\'s mediocore.
Props go to Sega for doing something none of these other companies have been able to do before.. make an adventure game on a console that\'s actually FUN to use a controler with.

Yeah, USA can accept violence and milk it for all its worth.

LOL :p
Actually i have had Shenmue 2 in my posesion since early this year. However i never got around to play it. I was on my last year of college and didnt played much videogames during the first half of the year. Now that im currently unemployed (hopefully not for long), and with lots of free time i started played videogames heavily again!
"The game just dosen\'t revolve AROUND violence like so many other do. "
Yup that\'s what i meant.
"Big knockers, lots of blood, cursing, implied sexual innuendos.. those are marks of a mature game. "
I sometimes go to my local EB just to hang out with an ol\' friend who works there and what do i see? Little kids playing Resident Evil at the GC kiosko, Halo on the Xbox kiosko, and GTA3 in the Ps2 kiosko. WTF? Arent these games supposed to be for adults? WHy are kids so attracted to this titles if they are so mature?! Because graphically they might be very mature but in terms of content and gameplay they might be so dumb even a kid could figure it out in no time.
Im just a little worried that it seems that the next batch of games tend to focus on the mature graphics stuff instead of some new mature content. WTF is that DOA naked volleball crap, or dave mirra xxx, and with GTA3 been such a huge hit u can expect next year to be full of the goriest, bloodiest and dumbest "mature" games ever.
"I can make a list longer than than this thread just of Adventure games where you don\'t kill anyone. And if you do, it\'s simply the finale to the game... and really.. there isn\'t even much action involved in it at all."
I would love to see that list. I dont really recall lots of console adventure games were the gameplay doesnt revolve in killing or destroying stuff.
"Sounds to me like you just need to get away from console gaming for awhile"
Yes ur right! I been a console gamer all my life starting with my ol\' trusty Atari 2600! The only gaming i\'ve done on my PC is playing dozens of console and arcade emulators :D
"I think Seaman and Samba De Amigo are better examples. Shenmue\'s genre has been done to death actually"
He,he im a huge Samba de amigo fan. I even have the SDA Ver 2000 import wich is much better than the original. Very creative game. The maracas are the best pheripheal ever! But Shenmue 2 i think is pretty original in its genre 2 and I dont think Hong Kong Kun FU movie style games have been done to death.
Overall very informative post dude and i will try to download some of those games u mentioned :D

Well, if you\'re talking PURELY console Adventure games, then that shortens my list down considerably. There\'s still a few out there worth checking out.
King\'s Quest - Sega Master System
King\'s Quest 5 - Nintnedo Entertainment System
Monkey Island 1 - Sega CD
Willy Beamish - Sega CD
Heart of China - Sega CD
Rise of the Dragon - Sega CD
Myst - PSX
Broken Sword 1 thru 3 - PSX/GBA
(THere\'s more on PSX.. but my mind is drawin a blank right now)
Stupid Invaders - Dreamcast
Monkey Island 4 - PS2
Shadow of Destiny - PS2
I guess you could double that by addin in some of the goofy Japaneese adventures which are really jus elaborate dating sims like Love Story 0 and whatnot. Console\'s have never been a very accepting home for Adventure titles because the general console user is cultured and groomed to enjoy action and gameplay that\'s as shallow as pushing a few button in a certain order rapidly over and over again. The few that are mixing themselves with Adventures.. like Resident Evil, Fear Effect, Silent Hill.. ect.. usually have very weak puzzles. Compair Monkey Island 2\'s puzzles with Resident Evil\'s.. and you\'ll see just how dumbed down those games really are.
Anyhow, as far as how a game can be "mature" when there are lil kids playing it. Come on.. don\'t tell me you never craved Hustlers and Beer when you were young? Ever seen a kid shaving with Dad even tho he has no chin hair? Kid\'s tend to gravitate to things that make them appear older and more mature than they really are. Ever wonder why they say "I\'m x and a HALF years old"?? Of course they want to play what\'s taboo for them.. what the "big" kids play.. but does that make those games any less mature? No.. Does it stop them from going home with their new "M" rated game and stopping by their buddies house to trade pokemon cards? No.

SonyFan...
Maybe we should hang you upside down, strip you and beat you with rubber chickens cause you didn\'t get your copy of Shenmue 2 until like 2 months ago.
And it was used...
BLASPHEMY!
:p
-
But I got it goddamnit.. I got it!!! Look at where I live. We have more Havester Tractors than game consoles in this entire state. My story is a triumph over adversity. Sides, I\'m not the one who\'s one of the forums most famous Sega Fanboys. :p
-
And proud of it...
Actually, to be honest, I haven\'t really been all that impressed with Sega except for Shenmue.
