What do you think? Which looks better? Does PS2 ingame graphics look better than some of PSXs FMVs?
I say yes. Sure there is some extremely nice looking FMV on PSX, but IMO PS2 beats most of them.
I tried to find shots of GT1 and 2 FMV but I didn’t find any good screens. However GT3 easily beats them IMO.

This is something that I have always said, but I will say it again. Because of the way the PS2 graphic engine works, its very difficult to get graphics that look like rendered FMV, and this is because of jaggies and shimmering. Sure, character models and textures are very similar, and the games do run at 60 instead of 28, but on the whole FMV always has looked better, simply because of the smoothness and perspective camera effects.
I am certainly thinking that something like GT4 could easily top some of GT1\'s intro\'s (GT2\'s intro was actually a GT 2000 build running on two PS2\'s). Thats how that got rid of the jaggies.

...ehh?
What\'s with that doctored shot of Tidus?
Please, enlighten me.
-
LMAO.......his face looks like he\'s on drugs so someone must have thought it would be funny to conveniently place that needle there.
-
may I ask where the fifth picture came from? It sure as hell isn\'t in the damn game.
-
I made it :)
I couldn’t find the unedited one so I had to use it ;)

The bottleneck isn\'t the PS2 graphic engine (you probably ment GPU), but the lack of effort and talent with most developers.
Ah yes Fast, I agree about the FMV thing. Jak and Daxter looks incredible in motion and reminds me more of a Disney cartoon than anything else. Baulder\'s Gate has some awesome animation (the lip synching is probably the best I\'ve seen in a game, together with Jak & Daxter), Final Fantasy has some great character models, GT3 looks significantly better than the intro in GT1/2 (thanks to wet stages and real time reflections on the cars), Tekken TAG looks about as good as the FMV\'s (would have to compare them again to be sure though)... and and and!
The great thing is, there\'s still heaps to be improved graphicswise....
*waits for Jak and Daxter II

those FF8 FMV pics completely blow away the FFX in-game pics.

And IMO FFX ingame characters assrapes those in FFVIII ;)
-
Ouch.. those jaggies are gonna hurt *flinches*

Perhaps the detail of PS2 characters is bigger, but I think PSX FMV are better in quality than realtime PS2 graphics. Of course, it also depends on the game you compare, because FFVII FMV are not the FFIX FMV. Perhaps next generation has twice the quality of PS2 FMV :D I don\'t think so ;)

HAHAHA, I just noticed the syringe :D:D:D

Screenshots... BAH I say. (notice usage of capital letters).
Look at FFX ingame, IN MOTION.
Look at FFVIII FMV, IN MOTION.
Eh?
It\'s nowhere near that FMV guality. It does surpass some lame mid-90s FMV, sure, but you\'re really lost with this comparison... :)

The picture quality is better in the FMVs (FFX has some shimmering problems). But the models look like ass.
Im not just comparing FF series though.. Have a look at GT3, Ace Combat 4 vs AC on PSX ect.
Some things look better, others dont.

It actually looks like a little fighter jet crashing into Tidus\'s neck..hehehe

Don\'t forget the Cocaine:D
thats the drug you do with the spoon like that right?......bah, why the hell should i know.
-
Actually I think its heroin :D
You put it on the spoon, you the lighter so it melts and inject it in your arm.. I think ;)
Remember to get lots of airbubbles.. Adds to the effect!

The reason why ff8 cg look a bit better than ffx are because...
it run at a resolution of 320 x 240 at 15 frames per second. Even ps2 4 mb of vram is more than enough to give eye candy texture and lighting effect with only 15 frames per second and 4 times less resolution than ffx game. Because CD storage capacity is so limited. It runs at that resolution (VCD quality MPEG-1 compression) and half the frames rates of most vcd movies(30 frames) to save more memory for 2-d background.
I am pretty sure FFX runs at 640 x 480 at 60 frames per second. That\'s 16 times more than ff8 cg movies. That\'s just my guess though. But FFX polygon counts does equal ff8 cg except the lack of lighting effects and weaker texture and jaggy. ps2 4 MB of VRAM don\'t have enough for resolution higher than 640 x 480 or better texture.

That is incorrect my friend. Do some math, and you will see that is indeed possible to have a higer resolution than the above mentioned. It wouldn\'t make much sense though... after all, the majority of TVs canot display much more.

I\'m still curious as if the HDD will also act as the N64 ram pack did and act as an extra #mbs\'s of Vram. Is that even possible?

No.
HDDs are just too slow for that, but it\'ll speed up load times and let you store some extra stuff (like music, demos or mods).
ON TOPIC:
FFX looks good, but FFVIII FMVs look ten times better IMO.
So what are you expecting from this generation graphics, Fastson?
Just curious.
-
think of it this way: the HDD will allow lazy devs to get a headstart what loading times are concern. Basically, the PS2 should be able to handle ZERO loading times.. unfortunately, most devs can\'t handle it.
HDD == Gimmick (taking out online features).

on the whole when comparing those pics you are comparing the models and as far as they go they look relatively the same cept for some texture issues
but surroundings are lost in ffX when compared to the FMV
thats all i gotta say about that
