I have been puzzled by the word Ifrit...
It occured after playing Final Fantasy X and I summoned the aeon who uses fire, Ifrit...and then I remembered the word from the name of Dante\'s gloves in Devil May Cry and they were on fire...
I\'ve looked it up on the net and I only get the video game references on the saerch engines...
Is it a real word or made up?

also spelled AFREET, AFRIT, AFRITE, OR EFREET, Arabic
(MALE) \'IFRIT, or (female)\' ifritah, in Islamic mythology, a class of infernal jinn (spirits below the level of angels and devils) noted for their strength and cunning. An ifrit is an enormous winged creature of smoke, either male or female, who lives underground and frequents ruins. Ifrits live in ...

Shiva makes people shiver. Or was that too obvious? :p

Exactly, the hindu god of death.
-
I thought that was Hades.
-
for Hades I found this...
Greek Mythology. The god of the netherworld and dispenser of earthly riches.
This netherworld kingdom, the abode of the shades of the dead.
also hades Hell.

Alot.. almost all of Final Fantasy\'s summons come from ancient gods. A few are based off of mythalogical creatures like; Pheonix, Leviathan, and Bahamut. And a few I think are jus Square\'s creation. Least, I dunno where Carbuncle or Pandemonium fit in... but then you have Mog and Chocobo and all those too which are definately Square\'s doing.
BTW: Quezicotal was the name of the Aztec Sun God I believe.

go study again FIRE~naar/hariq ;).

shiva is the hindu god of war and destruction, NOT death
a carbuncle is a precious red gem , hence the gem in the FF characters forehead
any more brain busters?

What about Alexander. That summon looks nowhere human or god. (Kinda like some sort of robot.)
How about Ramuh? God of thunder? From what mythology?
And the unicorn in ffx. The hideous beast that belong to Seymour.
The Magus Sisters. So were these made up from square?
-
Thanks for all your help...
But let\'s not let it get out of hand...
-
i always assumed alexander came from the macedonian king of the same name
the magus sister\'s name derives from the latin root for magician
ramuh comes from a hindu poem called Ramayana
-
The Magus Sisters. - Tho I haven\'t played FFX, if there are three sisters involved it may be an allusion to the Stygian Triplets of Greek Mythology. The three sisters were all blind witches who shared one eyeball that they\'d pass back and forth. I believe they also held the threads of fate, and when someone died.. it means the witches had cut their thread.
You might remember them from the flick Clash of the Titans.
-
oh wow! Yes in FFX the Magus sisters came in three. And when you take on the Dark Magus Sisters they will DESTROY you unless you try and take them on individually. If one is gone, then they can\'t use their most powerful attack.

I studied a vast amount of words in many dialects, but in classical one (Coran) fire is that way (If i remember right)
