Anyone ever hear of the Windows2000 stop error \'IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL\' ?
My damn PC pops that stop error up all the time. At least 5 times a day, usually more. It even happens when my PC is just sitting here running and I don\'t have any programs up.
Anyone have any idea how to fix this? I\'ve looked all over the net and can\'t seem to find anything that says how to solve the problem, just says what it is.
I\'m thinking about just trying to reinstall my OS...

Are you on the latest Service Pack?
Also how many of your PCI slots do you have taken up?
-
ahh the good old \'IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error.. I don\'t care what any says, but you should in bios set each PCI slot with it\'s own irq.. Don\'t use the PCI slot under your AGP slot, normaly it\'s sharing a IRQ with the AGP. What\'s happening, is some cards or devices are sharing IRQs, they are conflicting and causing a error. Winxp, 2000 etc are meant to be able to share IRQs with different devices. Yet, they don\'t do a very good job.
Also make sure everything is up to date, windows, Drivers etc.
If you have updated or added any new hardware.. Try removing it or the latest driver u have installed. It can sometimes help.
-
I only have 1 PCI slot taken up, it\'s a couple slots away from my AGP slot.
I tried what you said Soulgrind, but when I saved the settings, before Win2000 booted up, it asked for a disk. It didn\'t say what disk tho...
Are there any IRQs I shouldn\'t set a slot to? Something that may be used by windows all the time?
-
What is your 1 PCI device? Sound card? You might try moving it to a different slot.
-
What did it say exactly?
Anyway, you can find out what IRQs are being shared this way.
go into your control panel,
go into system. now i can\'t remember what 2000 system panel looks like.. but go into hardware, then device manager.
Now click on VIEW, then resources by type..
Look under Interrupt Request (IRQ)
Check to see what IRQs are the same.
if u know how.. Take a screenshot (printscreen key) then send it too soulgrind2@hotmail.com If you know how to alter devices then thats kewl. What u can do is Disable any USB devices, Parallel ports and Com ports that your not using under bios.. They waste IRQ resources.
But before anything like that.. Make sure you have tryed uninstalling drivers that you may have installed recently, and try updating drivers. check to see if ALL your devices are updated fully. Including MB drivers.. AGP, PCI, USB, IDE drivers etc.
You can also do what ER said.. Try using the PCI device in a different slot.. If it\'s not in the slot that\'s furthest from the AGP device, Try it there. Or try it in the 2nd PCI slot. That\'s meant to be the best slot for soundcards, So i\'ve heard.

Email sent, Soulgrind.
I\'ve got 6 IRQs set at 9. :o
I went through a couple weeks ago and updated all my drivers that had updates. This problem just started a few days ago.

Yeah, soundcard. Tried moving it and it didn\'t work. :(

Your soundcard is sharing a IRQ with your Graphics card... MOVE your soundcard to a different PCI port.. The 2nd PCI port is the best... Example
AGP - Graphics card
PCI 1
PCI 2 - use this one
PCI 3
PCI 4
In bios give every PCI slot there own irq.. don\'t have it on auto. If you arn\'t using your USB ports, Disable them in bios.. or atleast give your soundcard it\'s own irq address.
Having 6 devices sharing the 9 IRQ is a bad thing. You need to change as many devices to other irqs.. I\'m not sure if u can change win2000s irqs. But in control panel, system, hardware, Device manager, Find the IRQs that are sharing the 9th irq and change them under each devices manager.. I can\'t remember if u can alter irqs under the system manager. Haven\'t used 2000 in awhile.
You will always have IRQs sharing. But it\'s best to try and make sure your PCI devices arn\'t being shared with each other.

I put my sound card in slot 2, and when I turned on my PC it said it was sharing IRQs with another device on my system. I had the option to just leave it as is by hitting F1, so I did. Figued I\'d be able to just change the IRQs in Windows 2000, but it won\'t let me.
I think I\'m gonna reinstall my OS and change from ACPI HAL to PC HAL, I read on a couple sites that it\'s the only way to be able to change the IRQ settings in windows 2000. Right now the button to click on to change them is grayed out.
I gave every PCI slot it\'s own IRQ, but the change won\'t show up in Windows device manager.
Or, I could upgrade to WindowsXP Pro, if you suggest that. I\'d have to spend some cash I was saving up, but I could do it if it would help get rid of these problems.

Make sure if u change your Interrupt Mode from APIC to PIC you Do it BEFORE you reinstall. If you don\'t your system will probably hang. APIC is designed to create MORE IRQ for the system.

Bumping this up... I think I found where my problem is.
In my Event Viewer, in the System Log, there are a bunch of errors with i8042prt, which I found was a keyboard/mouse port. Not really sure what to do with that... I had my keyboard using USB instead of the PS/2 port, my mouse was plugged into another port through an adapter it came with (my old PC wouldn\'t recongize the PS/2 port plugin, I had to use that adapter... when I upgraded I never thought of using the PS/2 port, just went with what worked) I took the adapter off and plugged it into the regular PS/2 port.
But then in the Application Log there are a bunch of errors with something called PerfNet. I did a search on my PC for perfnet and found a perfnet.dll... I\'m wondering if that is causing it. DLL could be corrupt... Windows seems to like corrupting those things. :crap:
I checked for spyware, deleted some Temp. internet files that it found. Every driver is updated, BIOS is, cleaned the Registry, not sure what else it could be other than what I listed above.
Just wondering if anyone has heard of an i8042prt or PerNet error before...
/me shrugs

Try PC pitstop.com. They run tests on your machine give results and fixes. This might not solve your problem however its good for preventive maint.
