Found this on /.
http://news.zdnet.co.uk/story/0,,t269-s2120395,00.html
sounds cool, altough it feels like they haven\'t been working on the chip very long.
-
Very cool. Playstation\'s processor will still remain on top. DEATH TO X-BOX :fro:
-
That\'s too soon they need more time to work out all the kinks and take another year to add in all the new developments that will ensue in that 12month span.
-
That article really has little to do with the PS3, it only mentions it once. It basically just tells wha the Cell processor can do.
I don\'t think that processor has been confirmed for use in the PS3, has it? It\'s just rumors as far as I know.

Yeah but what about xbox2:rolleyes: .I think the chip is finished too soon to become a chip for the PS3 in 2006.
BTW:This thing sounds VERY POWERFULL.
While the processor\'s design is still under wraps, the companies say Cell\'s capabilities will allow it to deliver one trillion calculations per second (teraflop) or more of floating-point calculations. It will have the ability to do north of 1 trillion mathematical calculations per second, roughly 100 times more than a single Pentium 4 chip running at 2.5GHz.
How much floating point calculations can PS2 handle?
-
Haha... you said "X-box 2"....
-
Well yes I said.
What? There wont be an XBOX2 in the future???
???
-
Got I hope that\'s sarcasim... Xbox2 comes out 2006--EGM

This is mighty impressive if you ask me. It would be still great to wait up though for some more detailed specs. Anyway, I think it\'s a given that this will be the new PS3 core. Sony (and Toshiba) are investing a lot of money into this - I doubt Sony has another chip up their sleaves.
Even more interesting is the question, how a next Xbox or Nintendo console would fair. I don\'t see any of the two competitors putting that much of money in R&D for a next gen console yet - I also doubt that the PC will be able to compete due to its old architecture. It will be interesting to see if Microsoft goes the same route with Xbox 2 and how they\'ll fair against this one...
-
I really hope MS doesn\'t go the same route with their next console as they did with the Xbox. They can\'t if they ever want to be #1.
PS2 does has a Floating Point Performance of 6.2 GFLOPS.
-
Yep, and from the article above (and others), the Cell is rumoured to have a floating point performance of 1 TFLOPS. That would be 162 times more than the EE has. Hmm, on second thought.. didn\'t we expect more? Maybe yes, but then it\'s only a peace of silicon and in its state only existant on paper so who knows how powerful the end result will turn out...?
I do agree however that Microsoft will have to go the other route. With Nvidia signed up, I wonder though how far they\'ll go. And - shouldn\'t we already be hearing things from the MS camp? It\'s awfully quite... which also lets me suggest that the next console will be some PC hybrid... which infact, isn\'t a bad thing due to low and easy development, but could turn out to be a mistake where performance is at stake. We\'ll see though how fast the PC platform evolves though... when PS2 was designed at the time, no one thought PCs would be able to match it, yet the PC has already gone pass the PS2\'s capabilities, if not in all areas though.
-
I love it.... Can\'t wait till I get a job and start saving up.. lol so I\'m ready when it comes out, and the next console wars heat up. It just might.*shrugs*
EDIT - Will this site change at all? Will this place become http://www.psx3central.com?:) I hope so.

Well if they make Cell a CPU only and add a GPU that`s state of the art in `06 , then it`s not too early.
Also they could link 2 or more cells together to get more power if needed.

I can imagine PS3\'s alternative VUs.
-
This would be radical new technology we are talking about here. If Microsoft (or anyone else) wants to match it they will have to do the same radical approach. But if Microsoft are just going to leave it up to NVIDIA to do another PC GPU, then chances are it will fall behind.
I wonder just how serious Microsoft are. This is what Sony do best, forcing everyone else to change their tactics.
But Microsoft don\'t need to spend so much money on a new chip.. it\'d probably be cheaper just to buy Square/Enix/EA/Everyone ;)

If they can.

I don\'t think that\'s the only problem. Buying a name is not as hard as making sure all the minds that helped establish a name come with it or at least not go somewhere else soon after the deal is sealed. Maybe what happened when MS stated their efforts to buy out Sega and Square fell through due to becoming \'too complicated\'.
Anyway, it sounds as if PS3 is moving along right on time
-
Cool article. This seems very nice. ;)
-
Please Sony don\'t name it PS3.....

Why shouldnt they? The name PlayStation is the most reckognised console name.I expect the next "PlayStation" to have the same name with no 3 next to it for the same obvious reasons the second one kept the "PlayStation" name and logo.
-
They should call it "The PowarrStation 5000" with cell mitosis technoligy.
That would sell like hot cakes
-
I hope they\'re going with PS3. I see no need to choose a silly cryptic name like Xbox, Dolphin, Project Midway or whatever.
Playstation .. short and it explains what it is.. A Play Station :)
a three indicates that its the third in the series.
I don’t think Sony will ditch the most recognized console name right now.
PlayStation now = Consoles
Before it used to be Nintendo = Consoles

I wound\'t mind POWERSTATION 3.
Still keeping the number. The X-STATION remains....but POWER invokes.....um....power! :D

How would it look when newer hardware is released that is more powerful? ;)
I say stick with PlayStation.. :)
-
I also think they should keep the PlayStation name. Who cares if it\'s "not original" - it\'s a really well-known brandname, and PS3 just sounds cool to me...
-
I nintendo took a hint from Sony and went from NES SNES N64 to Gamecube. It plays games and it\'s a cube.
I too believe keeping Playstation 3 as the name is going to be the most effective way to see the console.
-
They are no doubt going to call it the PlayStation 3. Their sales probably would be impacted because people would think it\'s a different console. Just my two cents.

I don\'t really like this whole parallel computing thing that Sony invisions, I don\'t plan on playing anything online.
And how exactly are they going to expect to be able to calculate information in real time over the internet?
-
Oh man...... I\'ve never laughed at a Penny Arcade pic before... but that was beautiful!!
-
They should call it "G-man\'s PS3"
Sounds better, In my honest unbiased onion....pin.
-
how about 1337 Station ?
-
I was thinking the how cool it would be when we\'re sittin\' down eating a snack when we see the first "PS3" commercial come on and we then proceed to crap our pants...
Exciting times...*sniff*
It\'s still too early to tell what kind of power this thing will deliver...plus...specs always change...ALWAYS
EDIT: That comic is funny as hell...;)

You bet it is.Talented stuff:).There is no mistake in this one.

i hope they spend ages on the PS3 and wait till Nintendo and Microsoft (if they dare) release other consoles then the PS3 could b better than them...=]
