Title: public service announcement
Post by: mm on August 16, 2002, 03:04:15 PM
ever see this while checking yer mail?

if you dont know what it is (shame on you), its indicitive of a virus

anytime, you recieve an email that has an attachment of this sort, DO NOT OPEN IT.  more than likely you will be infected immediately, and unless yer running an up to date anti-virus, yer in trouble

that email\'s sender went by a name on this forum and a good freind of mine, and i know it wasnt sent intentionally, which ill explain later

i dont run any anti-virus cause there a waste of time to me, plus i like dealing with PC problems, its what i do for a living

so i threw caution to the wind, unplugged from my router and ran the extension

sure enough, after rebooting, winXP was a dog.  extremely unstable and unresponsive.  something was gobbling up cycles and resources like there was no tomorrow

so i visited an online antivirus site to see what i could find
http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start corp.asp

sure enough, damned klez

klez is a nasty little bugger, cause it replicates (will resend itself to other addresses in yer emails) and will attach itself to other files and hide in yer system

its easily removed, but to not risk anyone else, delete yer email address book before running email again

so, in conclusion

if you get an email with an attachment (even if its from someone you know)  DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT!

you can click on the email header, and that 1st screen above will pop up, click cancel! and delete the email from yer inbox, AND from the "deleted items" folder

oh, and i know you didnt do it on purpose, Eik
i still wub j00!

I had the benjamin worm a while ago. Took 4 whole days for me to get it fixed. DO NOT BUY MCAFEE ANTI-VIRUS! IT SUCKS! It didnt help AT ALL, but Norton kicked the bugger out. Norton Rules.

I think that was the same Virus that basically went through the cc a week or so ago.  Pretty much ended up getting sent to everyone on the boards.

Funny that you mention it, because my brother got a virus much like that one (perhaps it even was the same one) a couple of days ago. He had a hard time deleting it, since his anti-virus program was outdated, and the virus seemed to make it impossible for other AV programs to install and get rid of it. He says he got rid of it now though.

I don\'t know what e-mail prog you use mm but I imagine it\'s outlook express or outlook b/c of that msgbox.

I\'ve heard what some people do is create an entry in their address book that starts with a punctuation mark or number and is invalid (ex.  "..000@f_u_and_ur_mom.gov") so that when a rpelicating prog tries to access your address book it reads that first entry, can\'t complete it and gives up.
