Title: Taking the Playstation 2 Online
Post by: Kimahri on August 23, 2002, 09:14:05 PM
Ok, a lot of questions have been asked in the past, and most of them answered.  But incase you still have questions maybe this will clear some of it up for you.

Taken from [glow=red]SCEA[/glow][/u][/size]

[glow=blue]What you get[/glow] - For the price of $39.99 USD

[glow=blue]What You Need To Connect[/glow]

[glow=blue]How It All Works[/glow]

The Network Adaptor easily connects to the PlayStation®2 system by lining up the Network Adaptor connectors to the Expansion Bay located at the rear of the PlayStation®2 system. Gently tighten the mounting screws using a coin, and you’re on your way!

Once your hardware is setup, the Network Adaptor Start-Up Disc must be inserted in order to setup your ISP network configuration data to connect to the Internet. Simply go through the “ISP Setup” process located on the Main Menu of the Start-Up Disc. You will need a Memory Card (8mb)(for PlayStation®2) with at least 137kb of free space. Please note your network configuration data will be saved onto this Memory Card (for PS2). The ISP network configuration saved to the Memory Card (PS2) will only work on the particular PlayStation®2 system you used for the initial ISP setup. Network configuration data is not transferable from system to system.

It’s extremely user-friendly and the pay off is a world of limitless possibilities as the PlayStation®2 impacts the way people will use the Internet.

[glow=blue]FAQ[/glow]

What is the Network Adaptor?

The Network Adaptor is a small device that provides online connectivity for the PlayStation®2.

What are the Network Adaptor specifications?

It offers both broadband and dial-up connectivity, featuring a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet capability combined with a V.90 analog modem.

What is included with the Network Adaptor?

* A start-Up disc with an installation video, ISP connectivity setup, product registration and game demos.
* A mail-in offer for a FREE (yes, free!) copy of
Twisted Metal:Black ONLINE (offer expires 12/31/02)
* A hardware and software manual.

What do I need to connect?

A PlayStation®2, network adaptor, Memory Card (8MB) (for PlayStation®2) with at least 137kb of free space, a type of Internet connection (like DSL, cable modem, or a plain ol\' phone line) and the Start-Up Disc.

Which ISPs will it support?

The Network Adaptor works with just about any ISP, including AOL, AT&T Worldnet, Earthlink, Prodigy/SBC and Sympatico. Check with your ISP for details.

How is the Network Adaptor installed?

The Network Adaptor easily connects to the PlayStation®2 system by lining up the Network Adaptor connectors to the Expansion Bay located at the rear of the system. Gently tighten the two mounting screws using a coin, and you\'re on your way!

Do I need to use the Start-Up Disc every time I want to play an online game?

No. Once the Start-Up Disc is installed, the ISP settings are saved on the Memory Card (8MB for PlayStation®2) and all that is needed is a network enabled game to play online, or use the demos that are on the Start-Up Disc.

[glow=blue]Router Information[/glow] - If you wanna have your PC and PS2 online at the same time, READ THIS.

Ok so you have your ISP and you have your Modem but how do you get your PS2 online now?.....Simple. Spend more money.:(

Yes thats right you have to buy a router.  A router splits the cable that goes from your modem to your computer into two cables so one of them can go to your PS2.

So follow Ryu\'s diagram and you should be set.

ps: No you do not have to buy a Gamecube and X-box for it to work:p

[glow=red]From IGN[/glow]

Sony has games like SOCOM and Everquest coming to suit the interests of the one camp, and the Idol Minds-developed My Street is intended to address the other. Its presentation is clearly aimed at younger players, but gamers of all ages should enjoy its collection of puzzle games, board games, and other multiplayer party-style competitions for Sony\'s online gaming network.

My Street takes place in a simple online world patterned after a residential neighborhood -- players are all kids wandering around and getting into competitive games with each other. After customizing your character, you head for the backyard, the basement, the local park, or some other locale where a game is going on, and join in with up to three other players. Eight games are available altogether, most of them with relatively self-explanatory names:

Marbles
Chemistry Set
Volleyball
Pigs and Chickens
Dodge Ball
Corn Field Maze
RC Racing
Lawn Mowers

Alright, we\'ll admit to a certain confusion as to the details of "Pigs and Chickens." Chemistry Set looks like a fun Puyo- or Columns-type puzzle game, though, and the RC Racing and Dodge Ball games should excite the imaginations of old-school NES fans. The added element of online play can make any well-done arcade-style competitive game much more fun, and My Street also includes multitap support for four-player games offline.

This is certainly a funny direction for Idol Minds to go, given that the developer is best known for the later Cool Boarders games. My Street should fill an important niche for PS2 online gaming when it ships this winter, though. Online games don\'t have to be complex or ambitious, though -- they just have to be fun. Hopefully My Street will deliver an addictive, easily-accessible good time to PS2 gamers of all ages.

I\'ve seen the screen shots and they definetley look "kiddie" but that doesnt bother me.  I like these type of simple online games and at the very least this game is at least a renter for me.

I have a simple question.

If I were to send the Mail-in offer for a FREE (yes, free!) copy of Twisted Metal:Black® ONLINE by the time I get the adaptor, when will it arrive?

1 week, 2 weeks?
Title: router setup question
Post by: xxmayorxx on August 29, 2002, 09:35:44 AM
I have a linksys wireless router and a dsl cable modem which uses popoe or whatever that is, which requires a password for connection.  When I try to connect through my router I get the unable to connect try again later message.  I hooked everything up exactly like the diagram and used the automatic setup and put my password in.  When I hook straight to cable modem I connect just fine.  Are there any special settings I need for the router?  Thanks in advance.

I figured it out.  Since I am going through my router I do not have to use my password.  An automatic with no password will sign right on.  Thanks anyway.

Actually....I have a cable modem and no router (i bought one todat but i havent hooked it up yet) but i tried all last night to hook up my modem straight to the ps2 and it would NEVER pass the connection test. So do you HAVE to have a router? If so they should tell you that before you buy it.\\

If anyone knows how to hook it up WITHOUT a router please lemme know

*yes i have tried unplugging my modem for 30 seconds and pluggin it back in, that didnt work either*

You have to have the cable modem hooked up to your ps2.  Then reset your cable modem.  Then once it\'s set turn on your PS2.  I think this should work for you..

You have to reset the cable modem though I think which may be your problem.  Luke is running his now without a router so PM him.

I had never actually hooked up online until i got ATV offroad fury 2.  I figured since i liked the game so much, other probably did too, and it was an excellent time to look into the online option.  Come to find out, there are more people hooked up and ready to go than I thought!  Which is great because now I can play this awesome game not only with PS2 fanatics, but even real quad riding extreme sports types as well.  Definately worthwhile!

PS2 online sucks. Too much hassle, unstable, full of wankers, hacked, just generally shit.

I\'m not going to go through all that shit for it. Not worth it.

No one\'s going to notice this, but anyway:

Do I need to have a router to play online on my PS2? Or can I connect some other way?

Depends....

You can either unhook the internet cable going into your computer and then hook it into your ps2

or

You can buy a router that splits the internet connection into two separate connections and have one going into your computer and one going into your ps2...

The downside with the first method is that you can only have your ps2 or your computer connection at any given time...

What about having two NIC cards in your PC and connecting to your PS2 from the second and using Internet Connection Sharing? I think I read about that somewhere.

Now, I just got the network adapter yesterday. I\'m having problems with my router (rather, my mom is having problems with the router. I told her not to buy that one) and having a friend come over today and we\'ll give it a go. I don\'t have a line going down to my PS2 but I want to get a wireless adapter that will plug into the back of the network adapter. Is this doable or do I have to run down a line to the room where my PS2 is? Luckily for me, the computer is right above my PS2 so I can run a line down easy enough if I have to but I doubt my parents will appreciate me drilling holes all over the house. My second question would be, does Verizon (I have Verizon DSL) allow this or do they have charges or do they not care? Thanks for the info. I\'ll check back during my photo class for a response. I want to get Star Wars Battlefront online. I just thought of another question. Do I need a USB keyboard for startup?

you can buy a wireless gaming adapter for about 70 bones from Best buy.. that should set you up just fine.  Other than that, just buy a  long ass CAT5 cable and run that bitch to the PS2...

I doubt it has to be long ass. Maybe 10 feet to run from the router, through the wall straight down into my PS2 :)

the cable doesnt really matter.. any cat 5 cable you can get your hands on will work just fine.  We make our own here at work for the network.  I would go to Radio Shack and pick one up.  it will work fine for you. :)

I agree.

SOCOM 2 is a "must-have" online game.

It has never worn out it\'s welcome in my house.

"Ratchet and Clank: Up your Arsenal" is also a great online game for when you are looking for a light-hearted fun battle.

Anyone else here play NBA 06 online? I have yet to buy a router to hook my PS2 mini online so I\'m not sure. It\'s kind of cool to think games like NBA 06 and Ratchet & Clank have such good singple player and can also play online. Kind of brings a new level of replayability to the games. ^sorry if this sounds noobish, I\'m just new to the whole console/online thing
