Title: Laptops...?
Post by: Ryu on August 25, 2002, 12:56:56 PM
I just ordered a Dell laptop for about 1300 and I was wondering if any of you use laptops at all for whatever reason and what those specs are.

14.1" TFT screen
1.6GHz pentium 4 processor
256MB ram
20 GB harddrive
8x dvd rom
16mb GeForce 2
3 year warranty
all the other crap

I\'m going to be using it for the next few years for school and what not.  It\'s going to be nice having a mobile terminal I can take out anytime I need to record something important.  Besides that, since I have my router, I can use it with my DSL any time.  :)

I must say it\'s fine to cost 1300. The graphic card is a little... :) I\'ve planned to get one next year.

I bought my Dell Laptop Inspiron 8000 a year ago for about the same price.

800 Mhz P3
6 Gig HD
128 MB
Geforce 2 16 MB

Overall for a laptop it will play most games.  The only thing I am a little disappointed in is the system memory which I could upgrade - but laptop memory is more $$$ than desktop memory.

This model is supposedly a desktop replacement.  I haven\'t had any problems with it what so ever.  Now my AlienWare Desktop at home is a POS.  NEVER buy Alienware.  Crappy customer service and way overpriced.  My wifes HP 1Ghz Athlon cost half the price and hasn\'t had one problem.  Meanwhile I have had to replace the HD twice, the mouse once, the video card once, the DVD player once and the case was damaged on arrival.  The 30 day waiting period to get these built is also a pain.  Not worth it IMHO.  The next desktop I get will either be built by myself or a purchased from Dell.

IBM ThinkPad i1300

Celery 750, 192, 10gb etc...

It was a low end machine when I bought it and it\'s even lower now.

But it is quite small and light and has a built in Wireless network card, which is good since there is a wireless network in school and at home.

I got my laptop today and spent the afternoon formatting it, tweaking it, setting up user profiles for Rya and her sister, etc etc.  It\'s going to be used a lot for school especially during my free time when I write reviews and what not.  I love how it has a built in network card so when it came today, I was able to hook it up to my linksys router\\switch and load it up with mp3\'s and all the necessary upgrades from windows update.  The DVD playback is a bit iffy, but I blame that on the fact that winXP takes tons of ram to run its best.  I think I better upgrade it to 512 fairly soon.

Damn, I just got it today, and already i want to upgrade it.  Oh boy...

Not a bad laptop. My brother got an Inspiron for college and I was fiddling around with it. Its pretty good. I don\'t know what computer I\'m getting for college.
