Ummm...
This game kicks ass! I can\'t believe I\'m into it as much as I am, but I haven\'t put it down since I got it home yesterday. Keep in mind I have never touched Mario 64...
Graphics are colorful as all hell, I love the platforming challenge of it, and the game is quite simply just a blast to play. This game is totally worth owning the Gamecube for, as far as I can tell.
Any thoughts out there on this game?
-
How similar is it to Mario64? I have yet to play it, but to me it looks almost the same, gameplay wise, as Mario64. Level design looks identical.
Besides that water gun thing of course...
-
IMO, it\'s better and worse than Mario 64 in different ways.
To be honest, though.. even just after I cracked open Halo and my new Xbox games.. Mario has been getting 100% of my console play-time. Flawless it is not, but it is still incredibly fun. Tough at times, but fun.
After gathering over 40 Shines in 15+ hours of gameplay.. I would rate this 95/100.
-
Does it keep track of your hours of gameplay on the game itself, or are you doing it yourself, Blade?
Nataku, as I said, I can\'t vouch for a comparison vs. Mario 64, I\'ve never touched it...but the water gun just works really well in this game. Nintendo has a knack for dropping you into a cartoon and making it fun to play. After probably 5 hours of play (which is a guess), I can\'t wait to go back to it...
The game is just addictive...while watching the intro I was thrown off by the "kiddiness" of it. After bouncing off of my first rope, I was hooked. This was while playing a Toys R Us demo. I picked up Mario instead of Super Monkey Ball 2, which I anticipated very highly.
Buy this game.
-
I\'m guessing.. and I think I\'m way off.
I have 52 Shines now, and it\'s more like 30 hours. I just get lost looking for those Blue Coins while I have to brainstorm ways to get th\' harder Shines.. it\'s great. This game deserves the accolades it gets!
-
I rented it tonight, and about 2 hours into it. So far I have 4 shines and like 12 blue coins. Just beat the octopus guy.
-
Personally, I love the game. I just got it last night, and have 35 shines and counting. It has similarities to Mario 64, obviously, but it is very different in a lot of ways. The controls on the water pack, as well as the different worlds what really have a different style to them, give this game a flavor of it\'s own. I\'m really liking it though. It has more story, more types of moves, and so far more challenge than Mario 64 did.
-
I got Onimusha 2 and can\'t be bothered to play Mario at the moment. I think I have close to 20 shines and lost interest in it already, so no big deal. I imagine I\'ll go back to Mario once I finish Onimusha 2.
-
Man! This game is awesome! Just the right amount of difficulty and not too short and not too long with fun gameplay.
-
So far I have 4 shines and like 12 blue coins.
Just so you know ViVi you can go into one of the buildings and eschange 10 blue coins for 1 shine.
As for the game its amazingly good. The day I got it I didnt put down the controller for hours. I just got past *spoiler*
Gooper Blooper(octopus) for the second time. Ive beaten, The folwer twice, Octopus twice, and Mecha bowser.
Spoiler #2!
I was very suprised ot see the bad guy was a baby bowser!
-
Yeah I noticed that cloud. I have 30 shines now :)

-

-

-
Thanks for clearing that up for me too I didnt get that part either. But how do you do that cool spoiler thing? :p
-

Got my 35th shine! Anyone else love and hate those stages without the water jet? I love that theres parts you are the original mario but it gets so annoying falling off of rotating cubes and moving ones :boom:
-
I beat Sunshine a couple of hours ago. Go me. Me>you.
Anyways, the last level was very disapointing, as was the game to a certain extend. I beat the last boss on the first try, that has to be disapointing no matter who you are. And the part getting to him was relitively easy except for the driving the boat part(died 2 overall trying to get to the final boss.
I would give the game a 9.3. 8 is way too low and 9.6 is too high.
-
Should I have already done something with that ray of light yet? I have 41 shines. If so how?
-
Yeah, the difference between those three tenths of a point are huge.
-
Watchdog it really does. What the difference between a 9.7 and a 10?
-
Yeah, but that\'s not the score, the score was a 9.3 from a 9.6. Give me a break, is his scoring system so complex that it accounts for that small a difference?
On a 100 point scale I\'d give it a 9.6.
You moron, a 9.6!! SMS is no where near that good, it\'s so dissappointing, it\'s only a 9.3.
BS, #$@# %&!@ and @#$ momma\'s #$*@&* is ##*^@$ and (#*$%)%. It\'s sooo a 9.6, did you even see Mecha Bowser?!
Oh, right, I forgot to include Mecha Bowser in my algorithm, allow me to recompile my data...processing...processing...9.7. SMS is a 9.7!
SMS is so not a 9.7, idiot. Your algorithm is wrong, you obviously accounted for shine 58 1.3452 times.
:)
See what I mean?
-
****ing wow, so my 9.6 score being too high was pretty retarded. I can admit when I\'m wrong. Do you know what\'s even more stupid? Someone giving it an 8.0. Dear god the idiocy.
Should I have already done something with that ray of light yet? I have 41 shines. If so how?
Yes you shoud...you should look at it...
That should of been obvious unless you never played Mario 64... or don\'t have common sense. ;)
-
I\'d say the bigger idiocy would be critisising someones well justified opinion just because you disagree with it.
:)
-
Well justified? Ha. He had his negative opinion formed about this game well before it was released. The deah god the idiocy part was a joke btw.
And clean out your pm box.
-
I know it was a joke.
What negative opinion are you talking about? The negative opinion that scored the game a "great" ?? You think it\'s some sort of masterpiece, he thinks it\'s very good. I read the review and he justified all the reasons why his opinion on the game was not that of a masterpiece.
My PM box is clear. Unless for some odd reason the PM box limit was lowered from 50 (then again, you might not be talking to me)
-
60 shines BOOOOOYAAA!
-
Hee hee hee. Didn\'t like Mario 64. Much love SMS. I haven\'t been able to play nearly as much since I was out of state this past weekend, but were I to cash in my 80 or so Blue Coins, I\'d have just over 100 Shines right about now.
-
The 8.0 is justified, a game with these technical flaws would normally get a 7.3-8.2, But since its Mario, the Plumber god, you must pay homage to him. I was surprised to see such flaws in a nintendo first pary expecially in a Mario game... thats just not right :(
-
Flaws? I see no flaws.
-
Uhhh CAMERA!!!
I love this game but the camera can be such a bitch.

1) How can you not like Mario 64, a game considered one of the greatest ever and set the standard for all 3D platform games, yet like SMS - a game that many consider good, but still not Mario64 quality? I just don\'t understand it.
2) You see no flaws. Have you played the game? If so - you would notice a camera. The camera is a massive flaw.
I\'m throughly confused at this point.
-
I know that a lot of people like Mario64, but I never really did. I just thought the game was boring(still do actually). I can\'t really explain it, but SMS just seems more fun. I agree that the camera can be a bitch at times, but I still think it\'s an improvement over the camera from Mario64. At least the camera doesn\'t choose from several angles that are all like 4 degrees off perfect. SMS does have its flaws, but what game doesn\'t? Overall I think SMS did manage to fix most of Mario64\'s problems.

1) I don\'t base my views on a game off what others consider the game to be like. SM64 was my first 3D game, my first experience with a 3D analog stick. By the 2nd day, I had beaten the game, by the 3rd, I had all 120 stars. That was in the fall of 1996, and haven\'t touched the game since. SMS has already lasted me more than 2x as long and growing. Haven\'t played it? I have over 100 Shines already, have found a total of 190 or so Blue Coins.
2) I think the camera is perfect for this kind of game, and adds a new dimension to the gameplay. I feel it is perfectly set up, free, fluid, and intuitive. Within seconds I can find the optimal angle for any given situation, and the whole TWO or THREE times the camera did get stuck behind two walls on me so far, a quick hit of the Y button reinitializes it, and a quick swing of the C stick allows me to continue. It\'s much easier and free-er to use than the SM64 camera.

Mario64 may be considered one of the greatest games ever. But it bored the shit out of me.
I\'ve stated this time and time again. 3-D ruined the platforming genre.
The only 3-D platform games I\'ve ever been slightly entertained by are the Crash Bandicoot games and Jak & Daxter. *shrugs* I think Naughty Dog are talented. (All though I don\'t like them that much)
-
3-D is to video games as Britney Spears and co. are to music.
They sure are nice to look at, there\'s a couple of good efforts, but on the whole, they sure ruined it.
-
^^^^^ God, I love the way this man thinks.
-
I just beat Mario Sunshine tonight, and if you think the camera is a pain in the first 4 or 5 worlds. IMHO it gets alot worse. I suppose all in all it was an ok game, but not of typical Mario standards. I found myself cursing the exhalted one more than once. Pretty much anytime I found myself without a jetpack in the latter levels. I would post a review, but I imagine everyone that is interested in the game either has already made up their mind, or cursing as we speak.
-
I cursed at the Secrets and other hardcore obstacles at first.. but after going to get some easier Shines, I came back and beat \'em. The camera still hurts at times, but I think it\'s getting criticized a little too heavily.
I just got a Xbox with some killer games 2 weeks ago, and since I got Mario a week ago.. Halo hasn\'t seen a minute of playtime. I have 75 Shines, and I\'m still addicted after a week. I\'m going to bypass giving this any individual marks.. and just put it at a 94/100 score. It\'s got some problems, but it\'s kept me addicted with its gameplay.
A fine effort by Nintendo. It would have been even better if they dropped the non-Mario features of the game like cut-scenes, voiceovers, and frickin\' Roller Coaster sequences. That is so not Mario! :)

Cool, it\'s back.
Alright, I just borrowed my friends\' cube and rented Mario Sunshine. I swear, I am so weak towards advertising...FFX\'s commericals had me invest 400$ into PS2, NiGHTS had me invest over 300$ for Saturn...well, I wanted to test Mario Sunshine before I spent anymore money because I thought Mario 64 was horrible. THe objectives were boring, Mario lacked anything special other than run and jump, and I thought the controls felt "heavy".
Well, I\'ll be picking up Mario Sunshine when I purchase my cube in the not so distant future. I was immediately hooked...the game sets you in a small fight right from the get go, and everything afterwards is an event worth playing. My favorite objectives so far have been Manta Storm, everything in Noki Bay, Gelatto (sp?) Beach, and the theme park island...I think it\'s Pinna Park.
I think what I like about it so much is that it\'s not typical Mario, I like change and innovation. SMS pulls both off, IMO.
The controls were significantly improved as I think Mario feels more responsive...but it doesn\'t help in some cases when you constantly have to mess with the camera<----the only downfall I\'ve come across in the game. Well, that and I found myself a little bored with visiting the same world 8 times.
In all I say, Thank You Nintendo.

I have an unopened Super Mario Sunshine box right in front of me. I shall post my own impressions later on, but have to say that I am very excited ;)
