Title: Suggestions for a new car..
Post by: Living-In-Clip on September 11, 2002, 12:45:18 PM
I found out today that they are indeed goin\' to total out my car. In the end, I\'ll have around $2,500 - $3,000 down payment for whatever I want. I\'m willin\' to pay up to $250 - $300 a month payment wise.

So, what I was hopin\' for, is some of you car buffs to give me a suggestion. Nothing outrageous and what not. I don\'t wanna be workin just for a car payment, but something somewhat sporty. I do not like big cars, let me stress that. If it has four doors, I probably won\'t like it. If it can\'t take curves at 60, I probably won\'t like it. ;)

With that said - anyone have any suggestions?
I was leaning towards the following (provided I could get a decent price on \'em..)

Suggestions? Recommendations? Etc?

You can probably afford around an 18 to 20 thousand dollar car depending on interest rates and if you buy new or used.  I just bought my wife a Pontiac Vibe and our payments are 300 a month and the car was 19000 with 1500 down.  I was surprised by the Vibe, it handles like my Jetta - it comes with 17 inch rims and the GT version has 180 hp and its just a 4 cylinder!

I don\'t think you would like it though its like a sport wagon - 4 doors and hatchback, but for a small family of 3 it fits our needs and I am not ashamed to drive it.

Ummm.... SUPRA!  Concidering all the cars you listed are "nice" cars except for the ass kicking supra.  Those other cars are not in the Supra\'s class, not even in the n/a Supra\'s class.

Down with jeeps and communist! :D

And I know, Luke. It\'s just at one time, I really really liked \'em..:D

Thanks, Giga. I\'ve got perfect credit and a nice amount for a down payment, so it shouldn\'t be to much a hassle. Only problem is, I only have around one day for the car shoppin\'. I\'m suppose to receive the check Monday, shop Tuesday and they want their rental car back by Wensday. At most, I have two days for shoppin\', which makes me somewhat uncomfortable.

Get a Acura RSX or a 2003 Honda Accord. But yeah if you really want a quick car at a somewhat reasonable price, get a Nissan Z. But that might exceed $200-300 a month based on your downpayment.

But hey, if you can get a damn supra at a good price...by all means get it! If its the Twin Turbo MKIV version, then you will have a beast that not many people on the street will be able to contend with.

Whatever you do, don\'t get your heart set on one of those cars before checking with your insurance company.

My monthly car payment=$211
My monthly insurance=$127

Not my preferred ratio.  You\'re young and in college, right?  If you get a MkIV TT Supra and it breaks....$$$$$$$  (On a side note, F&F made supra prices skyrocket anyway)

I\'m not saying you should get a granny car.  I would suggest something in the 150-200hp range, mid to late 90s model, 60k miles or so.  I notice you didn\'t mention any domestics - you might be able to find a used F-body in good condition for $10k.  Good ol\' amurrican muscle.

Not in college. I\'m used to a high insurance. I was already payin\' upwards of $700 every three months for my Del Sol. I hate insurance payments for the most part, but being 19 and a male, anything I get is goin\' to be somewhat expensive insurance wise. Gettin\' a "sporty" car only raises it even more.
:D

Nice choices for a car.. All of them would be great, but if you can find a good price for a Supra, get one!

Otherwise, try an RSX.. How about a Hyundai Tiburon? Those seem pretty cool.. and even though its a 4-door..

A Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V!

I saw one the other day and nearly wet myself.

has anyone driven one yet?  I was wondering if they handeled as well as the old minis.  I just wish they still had the old cuvontry climax engine.

BTW, today I saw a new Hummer H2.  Upclose they look like a regular hummer ran into a brick wall.  They\'re not really ugly, but they might be a little bit too futurey.  They also have a very high stance with narrower wheel base than the Humm-V that makes them seem a bit ugly.

i think the S has around 180hp

*edit
heres an epsert from an article;
The reason that the Cooper S needs the intercooler is because its diminutive 1.6-liter single overhead camshaft four has grown a supercharger. Belt-driven and amazingly compact, the roots-type blower increases horsepower from 115 to 163 and ups maximum torque from 105 pound-feet to 156. That\'s good enough, says the company, to propel the Cooper S to 62 miles per hour in just 7.4 seconds, distinctly quicker than the 9.2 seconds the company claims for the garden-variety Cooper.

I don\'t race, but I\'ll try to clear it up.

Street fun, as in the sense I love speedin\' down old country roads that no one else goes on. Takes the twisties at high speeds and handles great.

Main thing is, looks nice, dependable and good gas mileage.\'

P.S - Chicks are a bonus.

P.P.S - Mini\'s are terrible lookin. That Honda S200 is yummy tho.

Any opinions on the Acura RSX? Looks to be reasonable price wise and I\'ve heard they\'re a great car. Anyone have one or have an opinion on it? If someone has one, how\'s the insurance on it (in a general sense) and what not? Payments, etc?

Prelude\'s are nice and dependable. Alittle to "family orienated" for me, but I still wouldn\'t mind havin\' one, if thats what it came down to. Then again, I wouldn\'t mind havin\' another Honda, as I loved my little Del Sol...

R.I.P
:crying:

Edit: Done some online pricing insurance wise and there is no way I can afford the Acura RSX. The Celica GTS is a lot more reasonable inrusance wise, $900 every six months. That\'s less than I was paying.
Depending on the payments for one, I may end up gettin\' one of those.
Title: Suggestions for a new car..
Post by: luckee on September 12, 2002, 02:55:16 AM
The difference shouldnt be all that different from the RSX and Celica, I guess it is though. Is a WRX out of the  question? Sporty, great handeling, AWD..etc. NOt sure you feel about Neons, but the SRT4 is not far away..205hp..turbo..nice toque curve..handles wonderfully..but like some nay-sayers will announce..its only a neon..but yea..only one that can decimate 90% of the cars under 30k for only 19k. VW is another decent choice..the Golf 1.8t...the nissan spec-v is another..the new protoge6 or even thhe mp3 or mp5....The new tiburons are quite nice as well.

You should be happy with any of the above listed.

Ugh out of all those I would go with the mini.  Honda, Acura, Toyota - so cookie cutter.  I like being unique and no affordable Japanese car is unique.

Consider this:  The mini is made by BMW and its unique - I don\'t think you would have any problem picking up women in it.  Also I have  to agree with Luckee on the Golf 1.8t - the thing has 180hp and you can get optional 17 inch rims on it, 6 speed tranny.  Not bad in my opinion.

I think I\'m well qualified to post in this thread because I\'ve been car shopping for about a year and a half.  There are so many suggestions I could give, but I don\'t have time to write a book on the subject, so I\'ll just post a few points.  Email or PM me if you want more.

Why are you against the Miata?  Based on your criteria, I think this should be your No. 1 choice.  It\'s more like a REAL sports car than any of the other vehicles you could buy on your budget.  It\'s FR, a proven design, excellent handling, good power/weight ratio, and if you by a 1999 or newer, it will be very nice looking.  The newer ones without the popup headlights really look awesome I think.  The biggest downside is that there are so many of them on the road.  Your car won\'t be unique, but it will provide TONS of driving enjoyment.

To be realistic, you need to maximize the value you get out of this $2,500 downpayment.  The best way to do that is to buy a used vehicle.  If I were you, I\'d look for a 1999 or 2000 Miata.  You should be able to find one from a private seller for $12,000 - $15,000, maybe less, I don\'t know what the market is like in your city.  Just do some searching on http://www.autotrader.com and then compare the prices from private sellers ONLY to the blue book value on http://www.kbb.com  Get ready to bargain.

You better count on taking more than one day to buy your car.  I guarantee that if you try to do it in one day, you will get screwed.  You will definitely get screwed if you try to buy from a dealer in one day.  They will smell the urgency on you, and they\'ll be looking for every opportunity to bend you over.  I wouldn\'t recommend buying from a dealer anyway.  I think you need to plan on about 2 weeks of shopping, and borrow someone else\'s car, or just us public transportation.

I think it\'s pointless to depend on insurance quotes from the Internet.  The insurance industry is so full of shiat, you\'re going to find HUGE variations in rates between different companies for no reason whatsoever.  You might use the online quotes as a means of comparison between vehicles, but they will probably be much higher than you need to pay.  $2,800 per year for a Del Sol is outrageous, even for a 19 year old driver.  Did you shop around for that?  Admittedly Hondas are prone to theft, but even so that is unbelievable.  You should plan on cutting $1,000 or more off that, and call 20 or more insurance companies until you find it.  There are some cars like the ITR or Supra that cannot be insured that cheaply, but for any common, high production model, I think it\'s quite possible.

Then get married.......

for only about 300 bucks a month you can\'t go much more than 15,000 for a car.  That is with 8% interest.  You can probably get less than that though.

Maybe not much less though on a used car.

To add to what Videoholic said - on a used car you can\'t finance as long either.  A 60 month payment is going to be less than a 48 month payment obviously.

I have a Acura RSX-S and its a all around good car. If you can afford a GTS than you can afford the RSX Type S if not you can definately afford a Base RSX.
The celica is more expensive than the rsx-s car payment wise, while the rsx-s will be more expensive insurance wise. It all comes out even in the end...i guess. Plus 2003 is coming up, there should be good deals all over for 2002 cars.

Ha, I\'m a 16 yo male, but my insurance is still less than LICs. I can\'t imagine a Del Sol being that much more expensive than a Camry.

I still don\'t understand why his insurance is that high either.  Its not like he\'s driving a sports car. :D

Too many 16 year old highschool girls drive Mustangs ... theyre the "daddy\'s girls" car if there ever was one (at least around where I live)...

Grab up one of these:

Honda Civic Type-R is a good all rounder. Don\'t know the cost in the USA, in the UK they are £16,000.

Mustangs rule all. The fact that stangs out number civics, is because Mustang is the better car. What is so interesting about civics anyway?

The reliability and re-sale vs other similar economy cars. Its ability to be able to rape some stang drivers that think they are the shit b/c they have 4 more cylinders and a icon of american muscle. Build quality...fords just plain suck :D Not to mention the challenge involved...anyone fool can make a 8cyl. fast easily. Its alot more fun for some to make a 4banger faster than the 8\'s.

Screw those Mustangs. I\'m throughly annoyed by the fact that I see one every 10 cars , it seems. I\'ve road in one before and wasn\'t impressed with the ride quality either. Then again, I just hate Ford..

And yes, my Del Sol insurance was that high. A  nineteen year old male, with a sports car that is considered a high theft risk will make your insurance frickin\' outrageous. I priced other places and could not find any place cheaper, some even more expensive.

Mustangs are great....but not so great when the road gets bumpy and there are lots of corners. And most places in the world, the roads are bumpy and make lots of turns. :)

Mustangs are pretty good in the straights. They\'re quick. But if you want an all-around great 8 cylinder muscle car....get the Corvette Z06. Quick off the line and can take F1 turns quite adequatly! Plus, you don\'t see to many mullet heads driving Z06\'s (unlike Stangs and Maros)!!! :p

No mullet here my friend.

Although, I would rather have a mullet than a rice mobile.

It seems that there is a disease that infects certain people who buy imports. I refuse to subject myself to that threat.

You can see what I mean here, and it\'s good for a laugh here (http://www.riceboypage.com/).

So any import is rice to you? Especially from Japan?

I thought so. That\'s typical of most WalMart shopping NASCAR fans like yerself. Say hello to your sister, Petunia, for me, okay Goober?

American designs just do not appeal to me in the least, never have. Everyone in my family loves Ford\'s and Chevy\'s and to me  - even the trucks appear to be the ugliest things possible.
It\'s all personal preference.

Personally I don\'t like the new Celica\'s, then again the only person I\'ve known to drive how is this 300 lb bitch that goes to my school.  I\'m sure you\'ll have fun with it.

Good choice L-I-C.  I didn\'t think you were looking for something that new, or I might have suggested it.  You probably got a good deal on a 2002 by buying this late in the year.  How much did you pay, if I might ask?  Did you get AT or 5-speed?  What color?  Can you post pics?  Carbuying is a joyful experience that should be shared!  :D

Automatic - they didn\'t have any Manuals....Sticker price was $20K and after I financed the loan, etc it was quite abit more, but still worth it. Black. ;)
