Title: A game you enjoyed, but never again!
Post by: Ginko on September 15, 2002, 08:48:40 AM
More specifically...What is a game(s) that you have played and beaten but will never go through again.  Not because it just didn\'t hold any replay value.  I\'m talking about a game that was insanely difficult, or just grated on your nerves, or just way to long.

Mine would have to be Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future.  It is a beautiful game, the underwater imagery was second to none and the gameplay was spot on.  I\'m so glad I played it and finished it as I consider it one of my favorite gaming experiences.

However,  I will never go near it again.

First of all, the game was long.  34 levels and I\'d say about 90% of them really tested my patience and tolerance for gaming. Some of the levels were huge going on enormous and it was extremely easy to get disoriented and lost.

Second, the enemies were far to many and some of them difficult to kill.  When a pack of sharks would all start rushing you and you had to hit each one 2 or 3 times it was a challenge.

Coupling that with objectives that were either non-obivious or just to difficult to enjoy. The stage where you had to guide that manta ray all the way into the cave and hide under it while you passed the giant eel was one of most hated moments of the game.  The manta ray was difficult to control, as you had to keep pushing it with your echos\'.  Add to that the air supply was next to none and the manta ray kept trying to turn back.

The boss fights...the one boss fight I remember taking me 45 minutes is that machine with the tenticals (sp?).  You were in a circular room with floating debris that would hurt you, and you had to get a power up that were only in two places all while a current was forcing you in one direction.  Now add to that, the tenticals are swiping at you and if you happen to get rid of one...you better keep going as they regenerate.  I believe there were 5...maybe 4.  Ohh, then add to that there were only 2 vents of air in the room.

I could go on and on how much this game drove me to the verge of insanity as I have many more examples...but I think you get the point.

A game I really enjoyed the experience of, but I dare not to tread those waters again.  I would lose my mind!

Anyone else?:facelick:

Luigi\'s Mansion. Not a great game by any means, but I enjoyed it.. and then played the Hidden Mansion about 35% through and haven\'t touched it since. Other than that, there haven\'t been many in recent years. Oh, Max Payne.

Yeah, great game.. didn\'t play it much after beating it though. Grandia II as well (incredible game) and Shenmue.. although I really don\'t count RPG\'s.. as the only traditional RPG I\'ve beaten multiple times is Earthbound. (SNES)

The puzzles in silent hill 2 are fairly hard, even on easy setting which is a pity cause the game is good. I completed it once about 6 months ago and haven\'t touched it since.

Puzzles in SH2 hard? Maybe for a console game, but I didn\'t think they were too difficult from what I\'d played of it. Give GK1 a whirl then talk to me about difficult puzzles. :p

Mine would probably have to be Castle of Dr. Brain. This game puts your brain through the wringer.. hardcore.. testing everything from logic, mathematics, basic thru advanced science, history, even computer programming. I consider it to be a fantastic game, filled with gorgeous (for it\'s time) graphics and puzzles that - while they stump you hardcore - are fun and rewarding to complete. After I finished it once, I didn\'t have the desire to go back. Pure puzzle games like that aren\'t really my speciality.

CastleVania: COTM  -  It was too dark and the controls where terrible when it came to summons. Still, I loved it.

Smugglers Run - It was a guilty pleasure that tested my patience on  later levels.

Luigi\'s Mansion - Loved it while it lasted, but it was simply to repetive for me to do again.

Parasite Eve - Last Boss. \'Nuff said.

Bah, maybe some of you didn\'t read my post...Sony Fan is the only one who got it.

While okay, I\'m more interested in a game that you have played  and enjoyed...but wouldn\'t play again because it was-

GunValkyrie is a good example.

EDIT: LIC got it too.  That\'s weird, when I made this post, I didn\'t see yours or ashford\'s post...

I read your post\'s Ginko and I answered it. All of the above games I loved but will never go through again for the reasons you listed.

Silly, Ginko.

Max Payne.. Great game, wicked action.. But 0 reply value.. It\'s one of those, Same S@#T different smell kinda games. Once you\'ve finshed it. There\'s nothing new in it every time u go back. Hell, even the bad doods are always in the same places.  If they made a MP part of it.. Then i\'ll have lan partys with it...  The nightmare levels were just annoying. I couldn\'t stand them.

and

The summoner.
Great game, but for some reason. The second time i started to play it. I just got bored very quickly. Haven\'t tryed it sense.

I\'ve been sick of platformers ever since Mario64 made you work for those 100 stars and this one has 120 shines instead so the game is basically the same objective wise and I got sick of it at about 53 shines... But I stuck it out and collected 110.  I refuse to go back to it ever.

Oo, oo, this un\'s easy!

Grandia II

Stinkypoopyboringlovelyawesomeannoyingsonofab**ch. Enjoyed it pretty much, and I really could relate to Ryudo, but good grief did it get annoying at times. I completed it within a timespan of about 14-15 months, yowza. I really can\'t see any reason to get back to it, ever again.

Sonic Adventure would fall in the same category, but I haven\'t even bothered finishing it yet, yech.

I finished Grandia 3 times and didn\'t find it tedious.

Love those boss battles and that battle system.

CatslevaniaSOTN but my reasons for not playing again don\'t exactly fit Ginko\'s requirements.

It was fun. Been there, done that, nothing to bring me back

Final Fantasy VIII.

It wasn\'t nearly as good as the seventh installment, but it was enjoyable \'til the ending. Yet it served no replay-value what-so-ever.

Same with all the Final Fantasies, with the exception of VII. I am starting my third run, this time with a walk-through in hand.

Sly Cooper and the Thevious Raccoonus. What a fun ass game. Everything was flawless and i really liked the bajou swamp level. It was short and rewarding but never again will i play it. Oh well. Another would have to be Oni. I am like the only person that liked that game but i got sooooo far and almost beat it but my mom turned off the ps2 while i was saving so i could eat dinner. damn her!!!!!!!!!!!

Anything specific rastalant?  You take the time to post a reply, why don\'t you put a little more effort into making it worthwhile?

Super Mario Sunshine has been added to my list...I enjoyed it immensely, but I won\'t put myself through some of those horrendous stages or tasks.

NEXT!

Well you obviously didn\'t enjoy it too much if you couldn\'t even finish the game. This isn\'t a thread about games you don\'t care for.. it\'s about games you loved but (for whatever reasons) you just can\'t bring yourself to play through again.

Bah.. forget it.

I forgot...

Phantasy Star 2

Super long and hard RPG that made me wanna keep playing to see what happened next but after going through those immense dungeons...

I cheated with maps but I don\'t wanna go through it again...

BOF III ,  great game but the tedius puzzles/mazes and way too frequent random bandles were too much.

GT3, I still play it but no way am I going to go through it again

Max Payne- I returned it as soon as I beat it, no replay value what so ever.

GT3 haven\'t touched it in about a year, MGS2 beat haven\'t touched it since, both games I enjoyed and still would, but once I get to a certain point I kinda just drop it. Two that I currently have MOH:Frontline and Stuntman, neither have I finished liked both, but just been to busy to sit down, and kill some Nazis, or drive a car through a jump, honestly.

Sly Cooper. I just finished it about an hour ago and I will never ever go through the game again. I doubt I even load it up to go through some of the earlier levels  (which are good). I think all the mini-games and the terrible last boss killed the experience for me. Not to mention the trial and error aspect of the gameplay, due to the one hit kill factor in some of the certain levels.

Jak and Daxter, I had a lot of fun playing it but I got everything to be had in the game.  The game was different but the gameplay didn\'t support going through multiple times, eventually it just gets repetitive.

Well... I have to say it was PONG if you want to call that a game now. We played that game until our fingers bled. Never again.

Unless I was stuck in a prison somewhere.

Turok 2!  Trying to find the next save point.  The game had some big ass levels!
