Title: Aaargh, help meh!
Post by: Samwise on September 18, 2002, 01:56:11 AM
:(

Dammit, I got a GF3 (Asus V8200 Deluxe to be exact), but when I installed it and tried to boot, my PC gave a couple of beeps and there was no signal to the monitor. So I plugged the old Voodoo3 back in, and it worked fine.

Assuming the card is working alright, what could be the problem here? I think I read somewhere that the Geforce line of cards use a great deal of power, and that if the PSU can\'t handle it, it won\'t work. But I\'m not sure if that\'s the deal - my PSU is 235W. I would of course buy a new case with a 300+W PSU if that would help... any suggestions?? :crap:

EDIT: The PC seems to boot/start fine. But there\'s no signal to the monitor; i.e. the card isn\'t \'found\' or something. Argh!

Your MB might not support it.. a MB also has to have a lot of power for GF cards.

what other drives do you have in yer box?

2 hard drives + two cd roms + floppy + a few fans will suck up 235w power supply like water

i have a 434w in my rig

Yeah, I have 2 HD\'s and 2 CD-ROM drives... so you suspect it could be the PSU that can\'t handle it?

Samwise, I think I can help you. That sound is a nice hint to solve ther problem, but I need to know what kinda bios you have (Phoenix/Award/Ami) and how long are the beeps (short/long).

Tell, me, i\'ll try to help you.

I think it\'s an Award BIOS. The beeps were rather short I think, and there were 2 or 3 of them.

Perhaps the first beep was a bit longer than the rest? Sorry, I can\'t remember it exactly. :)

What you described is the exact same thing that happened when I tried to put My GF card in my current comp.

My problem was simple, my MB doesn\'t support it. The GF card is an AGP 4x card my MB only supports 2x AGP. Don\'t know if that is your problem or not, but my PC did exactly what you described and it\'s my MB.

Me building new PC now. Although it\'s way behind schedule.

As has been said before, that little psu of yours is most likely the problem.

Or maybe the card is a homophobe :p

j/k

Aw, crap... My motherboard is an Abit BM6, so it\'s an "old" one. I\'m pretty sure it doesn\'t support 4x AGP. :(

I guess I\'ll have to upgrade quicker then. :)

I wish I had known all this before I had bought it. I was gonna use it temporarily until I got the money and energy to upgrade. :crap:

Samwise I think your problem is this, according to your quote:

The graphic card is all right but your motherboard doesn\'t support it. Sorry :)

Maybe you could put in a new motherboard like a P4.

I think I\'ll upgrade to a XP 1800+ and some 256 mb DDR-RAM. Should be fairly cheap yet quite powerful. :)

to tell u the truth the only advantage AMD processors have over Pentiums is their price (IMHO offcourse).

soon all will change.. EVEN NOW motherboards are being released with thermal diodes for AMD processors.. Soon the only difference will be the price. :)

*yawn*

AMD cant catch intel\'s speed

thier reaching thier temp ceiling and need a drastic change

Things change yea.. till intel drop there prices i\'ll stay with AMD.  Intel are around 3.5ghz or something like that.. AMD are at 2.6ghz. I wonder if they\'ll catch up..

ahh not bad..  There getting cheaper.. I wonder why? ;)  100 bucks does make a difference to some people.. If you can get a cpu that\'s cheaper, but performs the SAME AS A EQUAL PROCESSOR then people will go for the cheaper.. The only difference right now is the amd processors get slightly more hotter then intels. Once the thermal diodes are fully into the AMD motherboard lines, that will change.  Without AMD, Intel will still be rip offs.

I have a 250W PS, a DVD-R, Harddrive,Floppy, and CD/DVD player and my Motherboard (the cooling fan needed power). I plugged in my ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (It needs the PS and the Harddrive...dunno why).....and I have had no probs yet. I htink I am at my top........I am thinking of by8ing the ALL in one DVD/Burner/Cdplayer Combo I saw at Bestbuy I think that is where I saw the ad from.

I will.. While i get cpus that outpeform there equals. I\'ll be happy. The next cpu i\'m getting is a 2.6xp  My motherboard atm supports up to it. So till my mb can no longer support any new amd processors. I\'ll be sticking to AMD..  If i did have the cash, sure i\'d get a p4. But it doesn\'t really bother me either way. Till you own a AMD xp processor. You won\'t understand. :)
