Let\'s start off by saying since this is ps2 number 2..I have been VERY careful with keeping it clean..not leaving discs in when I power it up..etc..etc..
GT3..doesnt load at all..the game has some minor scratches but nothing serious..plus I played it a few days ao and it was fine.
GTA3..when it does even load..I can only play for about 2 minutes b4 the colors get all funky and the game freeze\'s *error loading the GTA dvd* pops up at the bottom.
TMB..same thing as GT3..was playing it last night..no problems. I put the game in today and in the main menu..no sound..I load anyway..funky colors and none of the control buttons do wat they are supposed to. Well..each button works..but its like I have change the configuration when its still the same. Also, no sound in game either.
Madden2k3 works fine..it just takes forever for it to start up now.
I have just gone through and check my other games...they all work fine.
I was thinking that maybe the lense needs to be cleaned? I keep all of my discs clean and cleaned them again after figuring out they werent working properly. Anyone have any ideas?
O yea..and of course..Im out of warranty, just like the first time.
-
How long did this second PS2 last you before it started giving you problems? Just curious.
I\'d suggest trying to clean the lens of the system. It\'s a very good thing to do every so often.
-
I have had this one since october of last year. Can I clean the lense myself or is this something I should send the ps2 to a repair shop for?
-
I would pay attention to the electronics you have around your PS2. Big speakers, vaccuums, blenders... There are alot of electronic devices that have bad filters on them, and ofcourse speaker magnets are never good. If you have something running alot around it, it can actually damage other dvices. I good test is turning a blender on while watching TV. I have seen some tv\'s go to ant races until the blender is turned off. My advice is: cut back on the margaritas man ;)
-
I sit the ps2 on the table when I play and move it back to the TV when off.
-
Just buy or borrow a lens cleaning disc. Then if it still doesn\'t work your ps2 is probably knackered.
-
Advice, don\'t buy your next PS2 from somewhere in the US. I think it has the highest breakage rate in the world.
You want one from Australia. I don\'t know anyone who\'s had ANY problems.
Not that I helped :)
-
You know when mine went bad and it was under warranty I really wanted a new one but Sony fixed mine instead and I\'ve had only a few problems since then and they\'ve been DVD movie related.
I think you\'re actually better off having one repaired since these taiwanese crap-boxes come off the line with a 35% failure rate.

might sound weird , but is te room you got it in ever cold??? it just i used to ahve my window open in my boat during winter, and my old ps1 was a bitch to make play early in the morning, maybe the lens got frosted over or some shit ( and i dont mean actual ice on it) i mean like it had a small bit of vapour in it, and it mists it up
-
nope..room temp.
-
All rooms are room temperature....;)

Before my console totally died and it was giving me minor problems I use to pop the top off of it and clean the lens with a Q-tip and alcohol. You might want to try that. You might not.
Also I have read that lens cleaners scratch the lens. Because they use small brushes to go over the lens. I never use lens cleaners, I always clean the lens with a Q-tip and alcohol using small circular motions.
-
Do you have any tips for me? Or is it basically removing 6 screws to get the top off? ANything I need to be explicitly careful of?
-
Ya its easy you take 6 screws out. Just be cafeful when you go to pull the top off. There is that little metallic looking strip that you don\'t want to break. It runs from the eject and power buttons to the underside of the PS2.
You \'ll have to pull the top towards the front a little to slide it over the controller ports & disc tray and you can see that metallic strip I was talking about. Just lay the top over to your right if the front of the PS2 is facing you and you won\'t have any problems.
Once you have the top off you need a small screwdriver to remove the 4 screws that hold the cd lens cover on. It has a sticker on it that says *Danger of lens radiation when on*. Remove that and you\'ll see the lens.
Then just take a Q-tip swabed with alcohol and gently clean the lens eye. Use very small circular motions. And don\'t apply a lot of pressure. Give it a minute or so to let the alcohol evapporate then put it all back together.
If all this sounds too complicated then I suggest taking it to someone, but it\'s really not that difficult. Again just be sure not to lift the PS2 top straight up and break that Eject Power metallic wire. You have plenty of play so you shouldn\'t have much to worry about.
Good Luck :)

God, your PS2\'s really punishing you!
I found that without explanation if I stood my PS2 up then disk read errors just stop. I gave up thinking about why.
-
WTF do you do to your system, I have never run into to problems w/ consoles. My very first PSone is still in top notch condition. So tell me, wtf is happening to your consoles?

Cheap and very random build quality on Sony\'s part methinks. I have one of the older ones, it still suffers from disc read errors but nothing like some of the newer ones that people I know own.
-
take care of yer stuff, plain and simple
ive never had any problems with any of the dozens of console i own
-
I\'ve never had any problems with any consoles I\'ve owned before, just slightly with the PS2.
I blame the vents along the front, dust and dirt can get in too easily. Although you can cure that by cutting a pair of black tights into the shape of the vents and sticking them in with blu-tac on each corner, gives it that little bit extra filtering that it needs.
-
I\'ve had 6 PS1s. They just crap out. There was a voltage prob on PS1s. There\'s drive/lens probs on PS2s.
-
As I\'ve said in an earlier thread, I don\'t really like Sony laser units, two knackered DVD players and a wasted CD player helped me decide.
Does anyone make a third party replacement laser unit that\'s maybe a little hardier?
-
6 PS1\'S?!
are you the kind of guy to open the lid before the disk stops spinning and even then, reaches in and stops the disk spinning with yer fingers?
-
I\'ve always taken pretty good care of all of the systems I\'ve owned since the pong machine, but most (not all) have had their share of problems. Problems that cause consoles to act up are nothing new, and people shouldn\'t act like console malfunctions are new or that the PS2 is junk just because some people have problems. Here\'s a list of things that anyone who has been gaming for long may remember:
NES:
A couple of common problems. Just about everyone should remember these. The dreaded "insert the cartridge and get a black screen" problem. This is the one that everybody tried to fix by blowing air into the cartridge opening, or into the cartridge slot on the NES and re-inserting the cartridge until it finally worked (usually after about 5 tries).
Then there was the blinking title screen that would happen after a cartridge was inserted. Basically it was like the game would just keep resetting itself before going to the select/start menu, and you had to keep taking the cartridge out and inserting it again until it worked.
Just about everyone I knew had this happen eventually on their NES\', even those who took good care of them.
Sega Genesis:
Not too many problems, at least from my experience, but there were a few times that games would randomly lock up and distort the graphics, although it was pretty rare for this to happen.
Sega Saturn:
I had 2 Saturns. The first one quit reading games at all after about a year, but it would still play music CDs. I kept the lense clean, but it happened anyway. I had a friend who had a saturn that wouldn\'t spin up to speed properly when the disc lid was closed, so he rigged the console so that he could remove the lid and start the disc spinning, then when he put the lid back on, it would load the game fine most of the time.
I don\'t know how common these were, but that\'s my experience.
PSX:
Just about everyone knows about the disc read errors that could be resolved by turning the console upside down.
I\'m not saying any of these consoles were junk, it\'s just that when you use electronics with moving parts, lenses, and cartridge slots, they are susceptible to wearing out/getting dirty.
And, taking good care of a system and keeping it clean will certainly help to prolong the system\'s life and to prevent some of the problems inherent to any electronics.

Once again..thanx for the help and info Dajo!!
I had 2 ps1\'s as well..the first one overheated..I know that one was my fault. I went on vacation for a week and somehow I left the damn thing on.
