Title: Professional sports and homosexuality...
Post by: luckee on September 22, 2002, 08:43:22 PM
WHo do you think is gay in pro sports?

I have my finger on ricky williams, kordell stewert, jeff garcia, derek jeter, I know his name, bt it escapes me now..the mets catcher that does the shampoo commercials. That tennis player roddick, and a few others I cannot think of.

What are your thoughts?

Mike Piazza is the mets catcher.

And I second Jeff Garcia.  Helluva athlete, but in interviews he has "the lisp"

yea..piazza..couldnt remember it for the life of me. A few others I suspect that I cant remember.

Sad thing is, none of them can ever "come out" or their careers will probably be over.

Haha... Everyone thinks Jeff Garcia is gay. I couldn\'t care less, if he can throw the ball, it doesn\'t matter if he has some sugar in his tank. But I personally don\'t think he\'s gay, because at the pro bowl he was in a jacuzzi with a bunch of hawaiin chicks (i know thats a really lame reason).

I also could care less about his preferance, I was only pointing out that he may be of the limp wristed variety.  Hell, if that limp wrist helps him hit T.O in the endzone, than all the more power to him.

How do you figure that? NO team is going to pass on an above average player because he is gay.

BTW, My vote is for Kordell.

Well b/c of the way society looks towards homosexuality. Sad but true, certain predjudice is still a big factor. Almost every "star" in the spotlights has kinda faded away or disapeared since publicly announcing a same sex preference.

Gohan, do you think most people would be sport\'n a Kordell jersey if they knew he was gay?  At the very least, it would hurt the teams fan base.

not to mention sales..otherwise they would be labled a "queer" as well.

I\'ve never said it out loud, but I also suspected Garcia. And from what I heard kordell Stewert got cought in highway reststop sting.Man that\'s the worst kind of gay.

Anybody else suspect Emmit Smith?

But like the rest of you i could care less if their gay or not,I just want to see the best players (sans steroids too,that\'s important to me)out there.Even if it means we have a woman playing baseball with the guys or kicking for my football team it doesn\'t matter,I just want to see the best out there.

Yeah but those weren\'t jobs based on skill and/or athletic ability. People like Rosie Odonnell etc. depend on their fans to keep themselves paid. Athletes depend on their athletic prowess to keep themselves paid.

No, I don\'t think most people would wear his jersey if he said he was gay; but if he won championships or made the team very good the fanbase wouldn\'t suffer. IMO, how they are treated or reacted to will be directly related to how they perform on the field/court/rink etc.

Are there any athletes that are \'officially\' out?

There is a football player in AUS who is, dunno his name though.

Doesn\'t Emmit have kids?  That usually is a tell tale sign that you are straight.

Most men don\'t \'realise\' they are gay until they are in their 30\'s, married and have children..

Isn\'t that right, Vid?

Hehehehe, I thought Vid was older...

Wouldn\'t homosexuality only really be an issue for all male sports? Like it wouldn\'t really be that big of a deal if a famous swimmer said he was gay as to if some big burly footballer did.

I just looked up that Ian Roberts dude. I feel really sorry for him.

Ian Roberts suffered some bad press, and I\'m sure lots of \'macho\' Australians stopped loving him as a footballer.  Which is rediculous, but hey, that\'s the real world.

I\'m sure in USA the reactions would be much worse.

Well, let\'s see.  First, Jeter was/is (I don\'t keep current on this stuff) dating the Miss Universe winner.  So either he\'s straight, or that\'s one hell of a waste.  The same goes for Piazza and the Playmate of the Century.  And Ricky Williams is a longhorn, so he\'s cool either way.

A better question than who is gay though, might be why do you care?

The same reason you or I care to know anything that we dont know already know. Curiosity...

Yes, Ricky Williams WAS a Longhorn. Yep, he\'s a queer.

Same with Chris Simms, along with Kordell. God I hate QB\'s in the Big 8/12 not from Nebraska.

See Yuz.

anybody watch MYT cribs with Ricky Williams?  He seemed to be a bit light in the sneakers, I know I shouldn\'t base my opinion of what his sexual preferance may be, souly on what I saw on a 15 minute show, but still....he seemed festive.
