Story, Sound, Graphics, Gameplay, etc. What did you think?
I just got a PS2 a couple weeks ago and figured it\'s time for a new game!
-
I think the game is great. The gameplay is much harder than the original MGS1. The enemy AI are much smarter and they can group up to a team of 16 people searching for Snake if he get caught and they even radio each other, unlike MGS1 where the enemy AI are limited and only a maximum of two enemies shown on screen.
But I like the puzzle in the original MGS1. I think MGS1 is a classic with a great story. MGS2 story is so confused and overdone with stupid dialogue about why this happen and why that happen... Also, MGS1 have more bosses and they are more enjoyable than MGS2. MGS2 still have cool bosses but they aren\'t many compare to it predecessor.
Still I have to give Konami credits for working so hard on enemies A. I. It a very big leap improvement over MGS1. The ingame cutscenes look very cinematic too, it have a hollywood movie felt to it. The music, well I like the MGS1 boss music better, but MGS2 main theme titled The Best is yet to come: is awesome.
MGS2 score
Gameplay: 9
Story: 7.5
Music/Sound: 10 Awesome sound quality thanks to DVD ROM format. Some cutscenes, you can listen to dolby digital 5.1 surround sound. Some good music.
Graphic: 10, very good facial expression and motion movement of hair, body, and water...graphic is pretty good. Amazing physics. Detail is very high but don\'t expect high polygons because something have to give to get amazing A.I.
Replay value: 9, once you finish it the first time, you might want to play it again to maybe get the story or collect dog tags from enemies. You probably going want to finish this game at least 2 or three times before you get a little bored of it. The game isn\'t as long as you think it might be though. But longer than the first. Probably you will finish this game in 15 - 25 hours depending if you skip the cutscenes or not.

Annoying story.
Overly long dialouge.
Terrible new character.
Nice graphics.
Uhm..Yeah - there is my "two cents".
-
i really enjoyed it, i hadnt read any plot spoilers etc, was as i expected, but i really enjoyed it....
maybe you should wait for mgs2:substance... whens the release date again???
-
Very good game, quite cheap now too!
Very intense storyline, lots of long cutscenes to watch.
Great graphics and sound.
Will last you for ages, lots of replay value.
Go and get it now!

DONT get this game if your looking for a shoot em up. This is definately not that. You have to take people out without anyone else seeing of hearing. Basically you are hiding the entire game. But If you like story based games, this is one not to miss. If you want a good game with lots of action, toped off with an excellent story, I suggest looking at Soul Reaver 2. I will always love this game. I beat it about 4 months ago, and I think Im almost ready to but it again. You could even look at getting blood omen 2, but play soul reaver 2 first. Blood omen wasnt that good. But you can buy it for about 12 bucks at best buy now. That is worth it.

But when you do have huge action sequences [sp]like fighting alongside Snake near the end of the game[/sp] they are better than any action game.
Get this game if you have patience. The story is unique, but very overbearing. The action and stealth elements are the best in any game yet tho. And make sure you take your time and have FUN with the game.
Here\'s a hint. Once you have both machine guns (AK47 and M4) get yourself purposely seen by the guards and run into a small room (probably the one where you actually get the M4 from (I think it\'s in oe of the storage areas)) then place Claymore\'s around the door entrance and try to fend off all the guards that will come after you.
It\'s the most fun I\'ve ever had in a game.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER.
You\'ve got the right idea but you can take it a stage further. Rig the door with claymores and then rig the entire floor of one of the rooms in that area with around 15 lots of C4 and run and hide in the little vent in the floor/wall.
5 guards dead just getting in and then the swat team are turned to giblets when you set just one C4 off!!
Sick, maybe,..............fun,..............ooh yeah!

Great game. Story is confusing but I don\'t think it detracts that much from the overall experience. Action is great, good boss fights and so many cool details.
It\'s a must buy for any ps2 owner IMO.

Graphics: Awesome Drooling Eye Candy
Effects: Rain, active environments...awesome
Story (compared to MGS1): Complete utter crap and a big disappointment for us all. New character is a homo...Snake is still the pimp
I think this game is very good...not as great as I expected, but many fun surprises with fuid graphics all the way through. You should at least play it...just to say ya did...

I think MGS2 SOL is a mixed bag. First the good part.
Gameplay is addictive, I keep playing it. Even though
the variety in weapon use is limited to the game\'s actual
goals (stuff which should be done according to the story
and progress of the game). Of course you can blow up
something or somebody anytime you like with a C4 or
a claymore. Shame though they don\'t show any damage
to the environment.
There are some nice cinematic touches in the cutscenes.
I\'m not saying ALL cutscenes are superbly directed, but some
are. Technically the graphics are still very good. Not the best
on consoles, but good. I think bumpmapping would give
this game a big boost visually. Disappointing to hear Substance
on Xbox is visually only slightly more sharp looking. :crap:
Now the bad. The story. Although there are some very nice
conspiracy theories implemented in there and stuff about
evolution, Hideo Kojima has made imo a mistake in letting
that story restrict sooooo much elements of the game.
For example, the visual design is imo to much dictated/restricted
by the story which is in result a step backwards in design, in
comparison to MGS1. I\'m talking about game environments,
charactre designs and visual presentation. I like Snake\'s MGS1
sneaking suit better than in MGS2 and certainly better than
Raiden\'s skullsuit. Also, all environments except the tankership
are a step back imo. Looks very repetive and bland imo. Yess, it
DOES matter, in what kind of game world I play. Presentation.
For me, the polygonal codec faces are quite dull. I\'d rather see
an improved version of the handdrawn stuff like in MGS1. Somehow, drawings gave it more \'charactre\'. Music is also a step backwards imo. Williams\'s score is utterly forgettable imo. Sounds like a watered down movie soundtrack to me.
It\'s sooo \'loungy\'and relaxed. I\'d like something with a bit more dark and gritty feeling to it. All in all, it\'s a good game but NOT a masterpiece. From the looks of previews, MGS Substance is gonna
be alot of what MGS2 SOL should have been.

What are u talking about? The music is great.

Unicron.. spell it with me now..

Thanx Bob\'s-Hardware ;) .... yeah, I used the In My Opinion
on the music topic. Everyone has their own taste I guess.

Looks like the best option is to rent it first, just to see it you like. Then you can find out what all the fuss is about.
-
THE MUSIC IS GREAT OK?EVERYBODY SHUT THE HELL UP WHEN I AM TALKING!I AM ALWAYS RIGHT!!! J/K :D

Like a lot of people here, I felt it is a great game. Could\'ve been better? Yup. But still a great game.
From a scale of 1-10
Gameplay: 10. Lots of things to do, and lots of ways to not be seen keeps the game interesting.
Story: 6. Kinda confusing at times, and too convuloted in others. Bascially, MGS1 was better in this department.
Music/Sound: 10. Herry-Gregson did a wonderful job with the music. The sound effects were great too (gun sounds like a gun etc.).
Graphics: 9. Though I felt the levels were a little to "bland" (need more textures and stuff) the models and so forth were awsome.
While I might\'ve prefered fewer cut-scenes and a little longer gameplay, it is still a great game IMO.

Almost everyone agree that MGS2 story suck. Too confusing and overdone. MGS hold a true classic story and it\'s pretty straightforward. I hope Konami know this and fix it for MGS3. I wonder why the level in MGS2 looks so brown greenish. The color seems to be tuned down too much making it look wash out and boring. MGS1 have better color.
-
Well, I think MGS1 looks a lot more gritty due to the fact that
the resolution of both the game and it\'s textures is less than
in MGS2. Thus the textures in MGS2 look more clean. BUT !
Imo, Kojima should have taken a look at Silent Hill 2 (at his own
Team Silent at Konami) for textures and environment design.
SPOILER (?)
The Big Shell looks like ONE BIG ORANGE crispy clean thing. The
parts that ought to look \'dirty\' still look too smooth and clean
compared to MGS1. The Big Shell in itself is imo a bad idea. When MGS2 wasn\'t out yet, I hoped to see more than just metal bases.
Like forest environment, wood, trees, dirt. Or rundown urban stuff like old brick-made buildings. I really find that a weak point of Kojima that he hasn\'t come up with other game environments than futuristic metal made bases. Big Shell feels alienating to me, detached from a believable world, which the MGS world is supposed to be ! If it isn\'t visually (and I\'m not even talking about the story) realistic, then why bother with the realistic gameplay and game mechanics ? I\'d like MGS3 to be in a snowy Yukon environment with trees, rocks, wood, ice, snow and some rusty metal.

since you mention snowy place...it remind me of the beginning part of metal gear solid 1. and the part where snake have to beat sniper wolf in the snow and there is a christmas tree...well the environment in mgs1 isn\'t that detail due to graphic limitation but still in my opinion less boring than mgs2.
-
How about this, MGS2 set somewhere in 2010 if I am not mistaken. If MGS3 set in the future, do you think it will be more enjoyable to be in space like in the moon where some blah top secret is held in one of those glass like building. Snake get to ride one of those space mobile thingy....never mind...

I don\'t think the space thing would work for the Metal Gear espionage war tactics feeling of the game. Space and Snake don\'t mix, IMO.

Hmmm, well, if you really think about it, the story wasn\'t THAT
complex. Not to spoil :surprised I won\'t delve into detail for
ppl who haven\'t played it yet. BUT! The story got difficult to
understand due to the bad direction of Hideo Kojima san.
The portioning of cutscenes and gameplay is sooo out of balance
that it hurts them both. So the story is kind of a ride with some
major hickups. It doesn\'t help either that, although there\'s
cutscene time in abundance, Kojima doesn\'t have time left to
explain some of the backgrounds of certain charactres, groups
or motives.( well...he does explain stuff at the end but, by that time it feels like a fake excuse for a too complicated story) Not the slightest bit, whereas all story related elements in MGS1 were indeed sufficiently \'explained\'. But let\'s just conclude that like MGS1, MGS2 tries to intertwine a \'secret-mission\' story with a message about life/mankind. In MGS1 Kojima succeeded in doing that smoothly, but in MGS2 it doesn\'t quite cross-dissolve and thus it feels abrupt and full of hickups which makes the story needlessly complicated. :crap: Add the forementioned bland game environment and a new protagonist who almost everybody doesn\'t like ( the F@G) and you got the ultimate ingredients for a game which doesn\'t live up to the hype.
-
Exactly knotter. The bad direction made it feel like Kojima was making it up as he went along. When in fact, if you analyze it you see it\'s quite complex and intricate in how well the themes, and story were interwoven. And make mention to eachother.
There are many points in the game (playing through your second time) that will make you stop, think and go "...OHHHHH, so that\'s what that meant!"
But I loved pretty much everything about the game, from the story, to the characters (I liked Raiden :)) to the graphics and art direction. But it\'s certainly not perfect.
-
I was disappointed about Vamp\'s backround story. He had almost none.:(.And he was such a great bad guy.
But I still do beleive that it was complex not bad.The bad direction and unbalance was due to the plot\'s complexity imo.
Also Kojima ommited characters\' backround stories cause there was too much work to be done for the main story to implement in the game.
Which as I said before was too complicated.:D
