Have a look at that video ASAP!
For 56k users that cant download the big video file Ill tell you what they say:
They\'re warning about a huge I mean HUGE security hole in Windows XP (all versions of WINDOWS XP).
This hole lets other users (remote users) delete files from your Hard drive via a simple email, files can even be deleted on your hard disk if you visit a certain website. (with a link that triggers Windows Help, when you see this window its to late, the files are already deleted)
You can do two things.. Download Windows Service Pack 1 or delete a certain file from your Windows DIR.
Note you should not download SP1 if you have a pirated copy of XP.
Anyways the file is named: "uplddrvinfo.htm"
Here is the full linkage.
c:\\windows\\pchealth\\helpctr\\system\\dfs\\uplddrvinfo.htm
Microsoft did not want to talk about this security miss, but thankfully it got out.
If you delete that file your safe.. for now.
I hope Im not too late.. :)
(anyone else can fill in incase I missed something..)

"you should not download SP1 if you have a pirated copy of XP. "
actually, SP1 only looks for a very specific cd-key and if it finds it, it does trivial stuff just to annoy you like removing yer desktop icons
-
Ok.. But I aint downloading it anyway. :)
There was a rumour before that said SP1 would make XP unusable after installation on pirated versions.
But I have heard that people have experienced some other problems after installing SP1, so they had to format their HDDs.
Suxxorz, why is MS doing this?

Because they can.
And there\'s nothing you or the government can do about it. :(

Because they are trying to take over the Earth.

actually the sp only looks for a certain cd key like mm stated and if it finds it it will abort installation and thats all, nothing else happens moreover theirs even a way to get around it.
if only linux supported more games *sigh*:(
-
its not linux supporting games thats the problem
its games supporting linux
looks at titles like quake 3 for linux
then run 10x better on a linux system because of resource management
even the new unreal tournament 2003 will run on a linux system
devs just have to put the time in
-
Yeah I was really looking forward to trying out Unreal on my linux install but the drivers for my Radeon are not compatible with it. Funny thing is, it won\'t run under Windows either.
-
*Cough* you can change your key to install SP1.
-
Yah, you can. *cough* I have it... anyone interested? *cough* *hack* *weez* *bend over ms* ;)
-
*cough*
XP SP1 looks for the devilsown CD key, which is a corp. edition release, albeit the best (and most common) version out there
copying windows is not piracy, its retribution
its very easy to change yer registration key, and there are hundreds of sites detailing how to do this on google
-
Yeah, only problem is finding a list of legit CD Keys. Which luckily from the aid of a fellow Central buddy, I got a list. WooHoo.
Not that I needed the list though because my copy is legit.
I hate people who use copyrighted material illegally. They should all burn in hell.
-
Yea, i know the solution to this little key problem. Works quite well ;)
-
LOL YUPPP you install a real OS like Linux, BSD, or Solaris
-
I downloaded the service pack today... no problem right?
-
I\'m glad I don\'t have XP yet.

Also, visit Gibson Research Corporation (http://www.grc.com) for his fixes for a few security issues. I\'ve mentioned this site before, but his stuff always floors me.
Microsoft\'s patch for the help-file deletion problem = 1.35 megs
Gibson\'s GUI patch (written in assembler) = 30 kb
He\'s got a few other patches for XP in there, to turn off some open sockets and such. I\'ve been following his work for some years, and have yet to find anyone who programs as well as him. His spinrite program is one of the most amazing pieces of code I\'ve ever seen in terms of size/functionality (spinrite will actually fix physically failing HDDs, and it\'s smaller than one disk).

FatalXception: Thanks, Ill be keeping my eyes on that site from now on :)
