Give me a freaking brake!! This jusry actually awarded 28 BILLION to this old hag with cancer. UGH. I feel bad for the whole cancer thing, but 28 BILLION!!!! Cigarettes are going to go up to 20 bucks a pack just to pay this biatch off.
Good to be a non smoker.
-
How much does that work out at, per cig?
-
bah, i really hate the american goverment
#1 there is a big fat warning on the pack of ciggs that say they are dangerous
(https://psx5central.com/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2FUS%2F9705%2Ftobacco%2Fhistory%2Fcigarette.surgeon.warning.jpg&hash=0c2856c6f1b6e84688efd2a26eb4c814fc58b3f5)
smoking is bad for you, EVERYONE knows this
#2 the bitch that deserves lung cancer will die a wheezy death before she sees a penny of that money. litigation is a mofo
-
For me? 28 Billion... I\'ve never even taken a drag.
If the skank hoe smoked 40 cigs a day for 40 years that would be 569,600 cigarettes....
comes out to nearly 50,000 per cigarette.
UGH!!! I HATE LAWYERS!!
Oh yeah, the lawyers get what, 40%??? So they get tons of cash and they don\'t even have to smoke.
-
I smoke, someone give me 28B.
-
If tobacco kills... why is it legal? Why is it sold?
Drugs and other things aren\'t sold cause they affect your body and your health...
-
i used to smoke for a few years, 21-26
at my highest, i smoked 1/2 a pack a day
for my last two years, i only had 1 or 2 a day
finally, about 6 months ago, i figured whats the point of smoking one a day? so i quit, and havent even thought of doing it again. it wierd. i look down on smokers now, that i quit
-
Adan, they tax the hell out of cigarettes. That combined with a HUGE pack of lobbiests make them virtually untouchable.
In my opinion.
-
exactly, a pack of cigs in my city runs almost $4.60
3/4 of that is federal, state, and local taxes
PNC park (baseball park for the pirates) was half funded by tobacco taxes
-
Its the tobacco industries fault for selling a death product. Anyway, even for an anti tobacco person, this is rediculous. 28billion? The warning is clear on a pack. Sheesh  It seems you can sue anyone for any amount noadays. America
-
Several years back there was a suit here in FL against the Tobacco industry and they won. But this money went to research and such. This is cool IMO. But to give money to individuals for putting a product into their body that they know is bad is abslutely ridiculous.
Absolutely anyone under the age of 40 knew when they started smoking that it caused cancer. I feel sorry for no one that smokes.
I like to drink beer. I know beer is bad. I need to sue Anheiser Busch for my growing gut and my loss of modeling jobs because of it. I think 50 million would suffice.

I don\'t smoke. I tired a cig once, but I nearly threw up.
Both my parents smoke......... or at least they both DID. My Dad smoked from the age of 14 and used to go through 3-4 packs of 20 a day. We all (me and my sisters) tried to get them to stop. My Dad always said that he would NEVER give up smoking, and that HIS Dad smoked heavily all his life without developing any health problems, so he wouldn\'t get any either. Approximately 12 months ago, my Dad suffered a stroke, brought on, according to the specialist that treated him, by many years of smoking. Fortunately for him, he only suffered a very mild stroke that left him with no permanent damage. Since that day, he has not smoked a single cig. He says that from that point onwards, his outlook on life changed. Because he had never had health problems before, he never really thought of himself as being vulnerable. I only have to look at him now to see that it has changed his life, it is clearly visable that he is now aware of his own mortality. Unfortunately, I cannot be so optimistic about my Mum, she claims that she gave up smoking 20 years ago, but I see her go out into the garden to "hang the washing out on the line". little does she realise that I can see the somke out of the window, and even smell the smoke on her. I have confronted her about it, and all she ever says is "oh, that? That was just a cig that I found at work today" I tell her that she is going to end up 6 feet under because of what she is doing, and I try to lay the guilt trip on her by saying things like"If you want to smoke youself to death, fine do so, but don\'t insult my intellegence by pretending that you have given up, whilst smoking behind my back in a decietful manner"
You would think that what happened to my Dad would have made her sit up and take notice, It is my honest belief that she doesn\'t have the willpower to give up, and deep down inside, I don\'t think she ever will.

I think that\'s the main problem. States prefer to get money through cigarettes taxes before forbid this killing product. If a state would wanna take care of its citizens, i\'m pretty sure the tobacco would be forbidden.
-
Reason she got the cash was because she started when she was 16 or 17. They didn\'t have any warnings then even though they knew it was dangerous. She got an addiction and couldn\'t quit. But 28 billion is a bit of a joke.
-
Anything over 10 million for smoking knowing there was a risk involved with it is a complete joke. But 28 billion? What the **** has america\'s legal system turned into?
Anyways, mm is right, chances are it\'ll be a long time until she sees one penny of that money(if she ever gets it in the first place which is doubtful).

seriously, I smoked from 17-19 quit, then 22-24 quit for several years and now I\'m back smoking again... why? \'cause I want to... I had too much spare change laying around and I could wake up in the morning without coughing up phlem.
***gets in the 28 billion line***
I think I\'ll quit again in another year.
-
This reminds me of that episode of Trigger Happy TV where dude is hanging out next to these guys who are smoking and he\'s dressed as the grim reaper.

Um, I don\'t think millions of people suffering from withdrawal would be considered taking care of the citizens. Seriously, could you imagine the backlash that would occur from banning cigarettes? America would just fall apart.
-
So why not phase it out? Maybe put limits on how much a person can buy, and lower them slowly or something.
-
When the first smoking ads were done they actually said they were good for you,but yeah she don\'t deserve that much!!
-
Frank, that was hilarous..
-
SKyrider, she has known cigarettes are bad for at the very least 40 freaking years. Give me a break, not a brake.
:)
-
28Billion is definitely too much. I\'ve never heard of a settlement of that much. Anyway, I saw the stock for the company she sued. Sucks for any stock holders.
-

That\'s true but they were lying when they got her addicted,Don\'t get me wrong she doesn\'t deserve that much but she deserves money more than a thief that twists his leg while he\'s robbing you and then takes you to court.
-
Found out in the end, after all is said and done and plucked away, she will only end up with a measly 3 million or so... pfft
I hear a drop falling in a bucket somewhere...
***waits for cigs to be $15 a pack next week***
-
Thats retarded. They have the warning on th pack for a reason. She ignored it and continued, why he heck should they give money to her if she went on ignoring the warnings?
-
Because in courts of law, sometimes emotion over-rules logic where the jury is concerned. (plus some people just like to stick it to big companies with lots of do-rei-me) :D
-
28 billion, sh!t man, she could found her own country with that much money.
And all for doing something she liked doing for years. Jebus H f*cking Cripes. She doesn\'t even need this much money, she\'s about to die anyways <--- cruel yes but true
