What exactly does a software engineer do?
-
Programming
-
thats it? and what colleges can i role into to help myself getting a job with a gaming company?
-
That\'s not exactly an undergraduate degree.
-
The only colleges I know of that that offer specific game design classes are in Cali. I don\'t know the exact school but they are some of the bigger ones. I think either UCLA, UC SAnta Barbara, or USC is in the process of testing out a game design major. Other than that you can major in Computer Science at pretty much any 4 year college/university and intern/hump your way into the gaming industry.
If you are absolutely POSITIVE that you want to do game desing you should check out Digipen in Seattle.I believe they are partially owned or funded by Nintendo and they focus on nothing but game desing.

start off learning visual basic
then go into C++ and beyond
-
Most developers i\'ve seen advertise for jobs require people with degrees in C++ I\'m guessing that\'ll be the way to go. :)
-
Software Engineers can earn big bucks too.

i remember reading about a uni setup by a gaming company (i think it was konami) they teach all about designing, programing, and so on.
i\'ll try to find a link and post it later.
:)
EDIT-well its more of a training type school than a college but heres the url anyways http://www.konami.co.jp/school/ use babel fish to translate the page

crap...i have been taking courses offered at my school and the only program they use is Delphi.

C++ is a must right now, but that could change at any time. It doesn\'t matter though. Once you get the concepts of programming down, learning any language is pretty easy (because most of them pretty similar to one another). I\'m assuming you\'re not in college yet, so just learn delphi in High School, then you can learn C++ in college (the more languages you know, the better programmer you will be). Also, make sure you take a lot of math classes.
Obviously most people in the gaming industry just went to regular college (because the video game colleges didn\'t exist until recently) -- so you shouldn\'t worry about not being able to get into the industry if you go to a regular college.
Edit: from gamedev.net:
