Title: What is causing the Universe to expand?
Post by: clowd on October 08, 2002, 02:03:03 PM
Yesterday on 60 minutes they had a part about the hubble space telescope.  It has given man pictures of galaxies never before seen because of distance.

But one of it not its most important discovery was the expansion of the Universe.  We already know the Universe is expanding,  but the gravity is doing something its never been known to do before.  Instead of slowing down,  the Universe is expanding even faster then before.

A NASA scientist put it this way,  when you throw a ball up,  it goes to a certain point,  slows down, and comes back down due to gravity right?  Lets say the Universe expanding is like the ball going up,  but instead of slowing down and  coming back down,  something is pulling it up faster then ever.

This goes against the laws of gravity,  and scientists are baffled as to what is causing the Universe to expand faster.

I just thought this was interesting and decided to share it with all in case of not watching 60 minutes.

Any ideas?

I read in Illustrated Science (Illustrerad Vetenskap) that it has something to do with a parallel universe (as I understood it)..

We live in a "bran" and our "bran" has a sister bran connected via a "vacuum spring" .. Right now we are going away from the sister "bran", but the vacuum spring will eventually stop the expanding and we will collide with our sister bran (after the universe has died that is..) and our universe will be reborn.

Something like that ;)

OK so we\'re connected to a seperate parrallel Universe and a vacume spring is pulling us together,  well theres another theory,  any more?

But this theory does not explain the acceleration

I dont remember the whole article but I remember there were more "evidence" to this theory.. (my brother "stole" the magazine from me so I cant look in it right now)
They\'re sending up a satellite however to measure something to see if we really live in a bran connected to another bran :boom:

I had a look on the site:

Quote
Big Bang

En ny teori om universums utveckling kommer kanske att kasta omkull den gamla Big Bangmodellen. Hittills har man ansett att allting har en början och ett slut, men den nya teorin påstår att vårt universum ständigt återföds.

Big Bang.

A new theory about the universe development will destroy the old Big Bang model. Until now we have always thought everything has a beginning and a end, but the new theory says that our universe constantly is reborn.

It did.. But I dont remember what the "facts" were.

Maybe it\'s just that everything in existance is trying to get as far away from you as possible :p

How can the universe expand if it is infinite?
If it isn\'t infinite, then what is beyond it? And beyond that? And that?

What happened before the creation of the universe? What before that? What will happen when the universe ends? And after that?

These are questions that no human can answer, if you sat and thought about these impossible to answer questions then you\'d go insane.

Just as strange is something that\'s happening to a Voyager probe IIRC, seems it is travelling through a region of space where nothing should be but it\'s slowing down. And no scientist could explain what on earth (pun intended) could be slowing it down.

We can think all we like about these things, but I don\'t think we can really get the answers until we develop the technoligy that would enable us to go and take a look for ourselves.

Actually I have a Time Magazine from a year ago that says evidence found by the hubble suggests that our universe will NOT contract back onto itself, but will instead break down into small bits of positively and negetively charged sub-atomic particals and will continue to expand until virtually nothing exists save for those particals which are billions upon billions of lightyears away from each other in all directions.. and increasing distance.

As for the universe "speeding up", it could be anything. A new property of the universe we haven\'t discovered, a parallel dimension (or several of which), or even a mistake in their calculations. Let them study it more before jumping to a bunch of wild ideas.. it\'s not like we\'re really pressed for time here.

Well, the laws of gravity are always screwy in space. The universe is constantly moving and changing. The stars in the galaxy are always moving in like an orbit kind of thing. I enjoy thinking about space and the universe.

Space is infinite not the universe, meaning measurable matter. As for the question of why is the universe expanding,we will never know in our lifetime.

And if the universe is infinite, how can it expand?

Haha, Vetenskap. Now that was worth the price of admission.

My personal opinon is that the universe is inside a giant marble and maybe the alien owner of our marble universe dropped us and the forces from our universe hitting the great intergalacti ground caused the expansion of our universe to speed up.

Didn\'t any of you guys see MiB? That is a true story right down to the new hotness and such.

I think it has to do with the process of diffusion.  An area of concentrated matter extending into an empty area.  The fact that the matter is already separated acts like a catalyst (sp?) to speed up the process.

Kind of like a sugar cubes in a glass of water.  If the cubes are broken up then the process works faster.

Just my stupid guess.

i have no idea.. but i think its cos of light.. i mean whatever suns there are the light is traveling to everywhere every sec getting to places its never been, as u  dont actually see things, you merely see the light refelcting off them...... hence the universe getting bigger

I doubt our sun is responsible kopking ;) Unless you mean stars :)

not just our sun, i mean other in other galaxies, other sources of light etc
