Title: NHL 2002-2003 Season
Post by: GigaShadow on October 09, 2002, 08:28:51 AM
Lets see if this gets some responses so it can get stickied.

Tonight is the official start of the season!  woot!!  I am wondering who you think will have a good season and what players will do well.

My picks:

Western Conference:

Colorado
Dallas
San Jose
Detroit

Colorado winning the Conference

Eastern Conference:

Philadelphia
Washington
Toronto
Montreal

Washington winning the Conference

Just a few thoughts...

Eric Lindros will retire due to another concussion.
Kovalchuck will come close to if not break the 50 goal mark.
The Rangers will implode and not make the playoffs again.

NHL fans lets see if we can get this thread going!!!

LOL - could be...

Has anyone heard if Nabokov has signed yet or is he still a hold out?

Rangers (eat it)
Flyers
Senators
Canes

Rangers winning the conference

Wings
Avs
Sharks
Stars

Avs win the conference

Avs over Rangers for the cup

Predictions:
Most improved teams will be the Stars, Rangers, and Canucks.

Red Wings and Avs will be the two best teams in hockey, but I give the edge to the Avs with Forsburg back for the full season, and Yzerman out...

The Rangers will be better, and the main reason won\'t be Bure or Holik or Kasperitis.  It will be Richter, who is fully healthy for the first time in a long time.  Last year, he played with a fractured skull.

Post by: ROL Jamas on October 09, 2002, 01:11:53 PM
Yzerman\'s only out until February. He was injured for a month last year, and Forsberg was back of the playoffs. The Red Wings won in 7 :-D

All the Red Wings did was say goodbye to a retired Hall Of Famer, and sign a goalie that arguably has the same crudentials. CuJo will automatically make his worth go about about 25% simply by being in the Red Wings uniform, and the Wings will challenge again.

Western Conference:
Detroit Red Wings
Colorado Avalanche
San Jose Sharks
Dallas Stars

Western Conference Champions: Red Wings in 7 over the Avs :)

Eastern Conference:
Montreal Canadiens
Carolina Hurricanes
New Jersey Devils
Washington Capitals

Eastern Conference Champions: New Jersey in 7 over Montreal. Notice how I didn\'t even mention the Rangers? Because they still suck, and they\'re still overrated. Case closed.

Stanley Cup Champions: REPEAT! Wings beat the Devils in 6. That\'s when the wheels will come off...lots of people goona leave after this year :(

See Yuz.

Are you honestly saying that CuJo is as good as Hasek?  If so, I\'ll laugh at you.

And the Devils blow.  They have only gotten worse, so I don\'t see how they will get further.

I never said he was better. Stop drawing your own conclusions.

I simply said that he, simply by being on the Red Wings squad, will be better. He\'ll be the main reason as to why the team won\'t miss a beat.

As for the Devils, quite frankly, I don\'t care for them, but hell, it\'s not like they\'re buying their own team. Lindross, Bure, and Kasparatis weren\'t even Rangers 15 months ago. Ho-hum, another failed attempt to try and buy a title.

See Yuz.

Buy a title, or rebuild a team.  Tell me how many important pieces to the Red Wings team were there two seasons ago.  I know I can name some that weren\'t there.

Shockwaves - I wouldn\'t start accusing the Wings of buying a team since the Rangers have done the same for more money!  I hate the Wings most of all, but the sad fact is the Rangers spent more money last year and didn\'t even make the playoffs.

I will agree with you though, the Wings won\'t repeat.  Hasek wasn\'t even as good as he was during his years in Buffalo where he WAS the Sabres.  Yzerman will retire - he keeps saying he will if his knee has any pain.  To me that says he has nothing left to prove and knows its time to leave the game.

As far as Cujo goes, he has yet to win a big playoff series.  Even Hasek took the Sabres to the Finals.

I think the Stars are the most improved team as well.  Getting rid of Belfour was the best thing they could have done besides adding a few quality players such as Guerin and Young.  I was impressed with Turco last night - and Roy.  It was a really good game.

As for the Sabres, I went to a pre-season game against the Leafs
a couple of weeks ago, and they scored 4 goals in the first 8 minutes. ( there were also 4 fights in the first period...)

I still don\'t have much hope for my boys, SI ranked them 27th...

CBS Sportsline has the Canes ranked at 7th and I know that is huge mistake.  SI hardly covers hockey anyway.

I was simply saying that a Wings fan had no right to accuse others of trying to buy a title.  The Rangers have spent a lot, but so have the Wings.

And I wouldn\'t say the Wings won\'t win it.  I think they have a great chance.  I just like the Avs a bit more, but it could easily go either way.

And the Red Wings beat the Nabokov-less Sharks in San Jose 6-3. 3-1 at 1st intermission, 2 of those 3 goals were shorthanded by Kirk Maltby :)

Sabres came out scrappy against the Islanders (Peca-less, not that he would have done much...) 5-1... Lotsa fights & BIG hitting.
Coach Lindy Ruff said he wanted them to develop a "pack mentality", and they have done it so far. Anytime anyone got hit, there were 3 dudes right there on their shit....

They have never been a clean, organized team like Detroit, but I kinda like \'em that way. Not a bad start, I hope they can make a showing...

Sabres: pwn3d.

Chigago, 3-0.

they\'re a tired team (3rd game in 4 nites) and chicago was on fire for their home opener.

the beginning of the season shows how hard they practiced. if they come out guns-a blazin, then shit the bed after that, it means they\'ve been lazy.

BTW phil housley rox. :D

!#$!%!$#$!!!!  Ok I am pissed... 0.5 left and the Bruins score!!!!! WTF!!!!!  Roy played a great game and didn\'t deserve that.  Stupid Avs and their stupid penalites.  Both goals scored on him were unstoppable.  Once again the Avs offense seems to be MIA.  Drury is missed.
Title: NHL 2002-2003 Season
Post by: ROL Jamas on October 15, 2002, 01:07:21 PM
Wow, gave up a goal to the Bruins? Hell, I thought with the Bruins loosing Guerin, they\'d be hapless on offense.

That Drury trade - horrible. I don\'t know if they were looking to the future or what, but even if they were, they shouldn\'t. This is quite possibly their year to take the Stanley Cup and run with it.

Then again, There are the Red Wings :-D

See Yuz.

Derek Morris?  Colorado seems intent on beefing up its defense - when its defense isn\'t the problem.  Kasparitis was a mistake and then they lost him to free agency so they figured they needed a replacement.  Give up one your best forwards for what I consider a prospect is idiotic.  Maybe as the season goes on the trade will show signs of promise, but right now its deja vu from last season.  Roy plays great and keeps them close and the offense doesn\'t contribute.

On another note, now Nabokov might be headed back to Russia for the season.  That is a blow to the Sharks who were favored to take it all.  The way things are looking now I have to say the Stars look the best in the west.

Or Maltby :)

Man, Kirk Maltby kicks ass. So does Andrew WK.

I would like to argue, that though it probably doesn\'t even matter, the Red Wings have the best goalie depth in the NHL. CuJo and Legace, no other team can beat that. Hell, Legace could start for half of the teams in the NHL :)

Dallas was actually overloaded with talent for past 3 years.  Turek, Fernandez, Belfour and Turco.  All 4 are starters.  That was best depth I had seen in a while.  Right now they aren\'t too bad with Turco and Tugnutt.

I picked up Fernandez, so my goalies are now CuJo, Turco (great FA acquisition) and Fernandez. I\'ll see what happens.

As for Nabokov...god. He signs 12 hours after I dropped him.

Turco is a great FA acquisition.  Your league must be small for him to sit in the FA market.  I have Fernandez in one of my leagues also... the Wild aren\'t a joke this year.

Nabokov got picked up by the 2nd best team in the league so far, and who\'s beating me 8-2 so far this week. Needless to say, I am displeased. If the Red Wings can get it together, I\'ll look better.

That Roy/Leetch for Cujo/Lidstrom trade has to work :-P

Yeah the Sharks are not doing too well even with Nabokov.  I am really surprised by the Lightning this year as well as the Wild.  I know its early yet, but these two teams look legitimate.  I am really impressed with the Wild as they are in a tough division and pulled out an overtime win vs the Avs this week.
Title: NHL 2002-2003 Season
Post by: ROL Jamas on October 31, 2002, 08:47:13 AM
Yeah, I saw that game against the Avs...I was half watching that, half watching the Wings Sharks game. Federov had 2 power play goals, including the Game Winner :)

Nabokov\'s just rusty, the Sharks will get it back together, and they\'ll make the playoffs as a 4 or 5 seed. As for the Lightning and Wild, well, as far as the Lightning go, Khabibulin is the reason. There was a reason why teh Coyotes were actually good when he was there :)

As for the Wild, well, they\'re a young team, and they were bound to get better. Fernandez hasn\'t lost a start to my recollection, either.

See Yuz.

First Allison is out, now Tkachuk!!!!!!  One of my fantasy teams is being decimated.  Speaking of LA, what a heart breaking loss to Chicago the other night.  Even though they got a point they had the game won up until 35 seconds left in the 3rd period when Sullivan scored.  Then they lost it in OT on a Phil Housley goal.

EDIT:
No one even cares enough to reply...  The Hockey and NBA seasons are just too long to warrent a sticky.  Let\'s get a sticky going when it\'s closer to the playoffs.  Till then it\'s going to fall.
