Hey guys. I\'m thinking of getting into the whole \'fitness thing\' (in lack of a better word :D). I was wondering if/how you guys work out? What I\'d like to do is loose a few pounds and \'get larger muscles\'. So basically I was planning on putting together a running schedule for starters - but I could use some info on that, what food to eat, nutrients (?), how to build my muscles, etc.
So ... who\'s into that sort of thing? And do you know any websites with good info? Thanks for any tips/help/comments. :D
-
Everyone move away, TheOmen is coming in and there is no room for anyone else.
You burly man.
I get most of my exercise while going to the bathroom. With a penis the size of mine it takes a lot of energy to shake.
um, yeah....
-
I get exercise by going swimming about 3 or 4 times a week, excellent for toning the muscles. I also get plenty of lifting exercise at work moving washing machines, tv\'s, refrigerators and xboxes.
-
I also want to improve my diet, so if anyone has any good suggestions for websites, please pass them on.
This morning for breakfast I had a McDonalds Bacon Egg & Cheese biscuit, and now I\'m eating a Kit Kat. That gives you an idea of how bad my diet is. ..
Thanks
-
I had no breakfast and a Burger King Mahi Mahi sandwhich. Well, that\'s what I pretend it is. It\'s probably fried bleached fish crap, but yummy.
I better go do 12 situps and work that off!!!
-
First of all, try to make sure your eating habbits don\'t keep your physical activity from being effective.
As for exercising, when it\'s warm enough, I try to bike 20 miles a day at least 3 or 4 days a week. I also do an ab routine several times a week. And, once in awhile, I\'ll run a couple of miles, but I\'ve never been a big fan of running.
:alien:
-
i play football, go skateboarding... thats about it, i sometimes do weights, but aint done them for ages..... lol, did used to go to the gym, but i was going with bro , and dont wanna go on my own
-
First of all do you want to gain alot of muscle or just a bit? Or maybe somewhere into between a moderate amount?
If you want to gain alot I\'d say screw the running, eat alot of Protein (1 to 1.5 grams of Protein per LB of bodyweight everyday) and focus on weight lifting.
If you want to gain moderate amounts of muscle I\'d say screw the cardio because it is hard to put on muslce if your not intake more calories then you are burning. Keep a high protein diet until you get to where ya want to be muscle/strength wise then cut down the fat and carbs intake and start doing alot of cardio.
If you just want to lose fat and gain a little muscle (5-15 LBs of muscle) then I\'d say do a fairly active cardio routine with the basic compound movements in weight lifting (ie Deadlifts, Bench Press, Chin-ups, Squats). Keep your carbohydrates at a moderate level (to low and you will lose energy and to high and you\'ll keep adding fat) and fat intake very low but make sure to get alot of protein.
I\'ve been lifting weights for along time now and if you want any advice feel free to PM me.

Ahhh, now this is my kinda thread!
First off for a workout, I would do a basic push/pull routine. That meaning that one day you workout with exercises that push (ie. bench press, military press, Arnold press...basically anything with the word press in it) then rest a day, and do your pull exercises (ie. standing EZ bar curl, bicep 21\'s, shrugs, front rows, bent over rows...)
The idea behind this workout is that you can\'t over train with it, since pushing and pulling require completly seperate muscle groups. The routine should look like this;
monday;push
tuesday; rest
wendsday; Pull
thursday; rest
friday; push
sat; rest
sun; pull
it\'s a revolving routine, so you won\'t have a set day for a muscle group. if you need exercises try this site, it\'s great;
http://www.exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html
as for diet, the imprtant thing to remember here is that you do not want to over do it, and starve yourself. The easiest way to figure out how much to eat, is to take your LBM (lean body mass) and multiply it by 20. That will be your daily caloric intake.
Example; if you weigh 200lbs with 10% body fat, then your LBM will be 180lbs. So your daily maintness caloric intake will be 3600 calories. This means that your body at rest will burn this many calories. A simple way to loose weight is to reduce your intake to 200 calories less than your maintness level. Meaning that in one week you will have burned 1400 calories, in 2 weeks 2800, etc.... 3500 calories being 1 pound of fat, meaning that in 2.5 weeks you will have lost one pound of REAL FAT, not just pussy ass water weight.
If anyone has questions, just ask and they shall be answered.

A bit more info;
Don\'t worry so much about the cardio, as we in the body building world say f*ck cardio" Because as long as you have a workout that last over an hour, you\'ll be safe. Also, the more muscle you gain, the more fat you will burn. This is because every pound of muscle you have will burn off 20 calories a day, while at rest.
oh, also if you want to loose some serious weight with little to no muscle loss, I can hook you up with the Cyclical Ketogenic Diet.

I don\'t agree with Theomen on this point, Cardio is a vital part of the workout.
Of course it depends on what you want. If you just want pure bulk, no stamina and pretty much look like cube, yes, cardio might be a bad choise. Me, I find cardio impotant and try to make that about ~40% of the time spent woking out. My passion is surfing so for me its important to keep slim , have stamina and be strong.
My current work out schedual looks like this
40 min cardio in the morning (mostly stair master, and rowing machine) , 1 hour in the gym in the evening (with basically the same variation as theomen)
I do this mon-fri, sat I rest, sunday l badminton or squash.
But try and find a routine that you like, and start of easy! 1-2 times a week if you are not too fit.
And try to eat more protine and less fat. Protine is the nutrient the body have the hardes to turn into fat, and also as I assume you know, the building blocks of your body.
try and eat 2-3 grams protine per Kg of body weight per day!

well being a certified personal trainer (certified by ACE), I must say that cardio is not really needed in Sammy\'s case. He want\'s to put on muscle and loose some fat. What I told him to do, will do just that. At most I would recommend a light warm up of 20 minutes on a tred mill. He could do more if he wanted to, it won\'t kill him but won\'t help him too much. He said nothing about gaining stamina, or the likes so my recomendation still stands.... As for saying cardio is a vital part of the workout, well that\'s just insane, in the Amature Body Building tournies I\'ve been in, and been to, there isn\'t one person in the group that does over an hour of cardio a week. Sure when it comes to sports, you\'ll need cardio, but for strength and cosmetics, it isn\'t needed. Also, you said you use a stair master....that pretty much uncredits anything you have to say ;)
-
I use heavy weights at low reps and about 4 sets for each exercise... Do jogging as much as I can and my martial arts and weapons training. Need to do more but I’ve been lazy lately. :(
-
I\'m going to have to agree with those that are saying to go with at least some cardio. Cardio makes a huge part of my fitness schedule (when I\'m keeping to it), and makes your life a lot easier in a myriad of ways, especially compared to muscles.
If you are overweight now (and I had that problem last year when I started getting fit), I\'d suggest you lose weight first with diet and cardio, before building muscles. If you really start building muscles, you will lock in a lot of the fat in your body, and will never have the same muscle strength/size ratio of someone who started skinny.
I\'m hoping you plan to get fit, do cardio, and develop "functional" muscles (that\'s what I did). Body building can look good, but you have to remember that it requires a lifetime of maintenance, whereas smaller more reasonable muscles are easier to keep looking good.
-
IM VERY BUFF AND ALSO VERY HANDSEOME AND MANLY.
im also very drubnk right now.... smootches.

Ok, I just said that my self "If you just want pure bulk, no stamina and pretty much look like cube, yes, cardio might be a bad choise". I do not just think about the cosmetics. I want to be fit, just not look it ! ;-)

hehe...What are they called in english then ? stair climbing machine? Anyway, they do me really good. I gets to some muscles that do not get to much exercise running/ riding a bike. But you have to puch it a bit on the machine, just not slowly walk on it like an old lady ;-)
-
Hmmm... I only do cardio. 100 % of my workout is cardio, just about 70 min. running. I do that 3 to 5 times a week. That is
excellent for losing weight, getting ALOT more stamina (frequently I run 20 min without a break) AND keeping slim.
I don\'t need any more muscle.
From what I can remember of Samwise\'s pic in a picpost thread
he doesn\'t really need more muscle. So I\'d say ; Stick to cardio.
Oh yeah, you should drink lotsa water a day while your at it.
Good luck !:bounce:

I\'m still fat.... :(

fag.
 j/k

No, I am just not imature and in the closet about my feelings for Sammy like you are.
-
Wow, thanks for all the answers. I have no clue as to what cardio is tho\'. :D (I guess I could just look it up ;))
I\'m by no means overweight but I wouldn\'t mind loosing a few pounds (5-10 max. I think). Especially on my stomach. :D
I have a problem though. My motivation is quite low. VERY low actually. I\'m already thinking about forgetting it. :p
What I\'d like was a miracle that would give me a sixpack and larger [what-the-hell-is-the-word... a direct translation would be breast mucles] in an instant without all the hard work. That\'s not gonna happen though, so the easiest thing would be to forget about it. :crying: ;)
-
I got into boxing to get into shape. Weight lifting isn\'t for me....too monotonous and quite literally - repetitive. The bad thing about boxing is you get a bloody nose every now and then....but at least I can put a person down with a body shot to the liver! And I\'m not even left handed! :D
-
SAMWISE NO, DON\'T GO TO THE DARK SIDE.
I mean, the more you excersize to more brain cells you kill. It\'s worse than any drug on the market. However if you live a geeks lifestyle your brain will be all so happy. So let teh blubber expand into every part of your body.
-
Personally I dont eat meat at all.I eat fish though.
-
You don\'t eat meat?!?!?!
bah, what\'s next...you won\'t breath oxygen?
-
I stopped eating meat about a year ago.Thats nothing. An aunt of mine hasnt eaten meat for around 30 years.
I thought that wouldnt be good for my health so I made a visit to a dietician and told me that I ve made the right decision. As long as I eat fish I have a more healthy diet than when I used to eat meat.
BTW:Shaolin Monks dont even eat fish.Totally vegetarian.
IMO people cant resist to meat not because it is necessary for the body but because of good taste. You cant suddenly stop something you used to include in your diet since you were a kid and liked it a lot so easily.

Can anyone suggest foods that are high in protien and low in fat?
-
Sam, before you take any of this into consideration is that you need to be mentally prepared. Nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing is going to get or be accomplished if your mind isn\'t set on a fixed goal.
My best mental approach to a situation like this is to have many "small" goals in mind to reach a very big one. For instance, if you have a targeted body weight and fat percentage, then set your workout to do that desired goal. Then from there, you should worry about muscle.
One thing that is extremely bold in weight training in general is intimidation. Whether you go to a Balley Total Fitness or a small gym, there are going to be your extremely fit guys, and your couch potato\'s. If you really want to know the honest truth, because I\'ve been into serious weight training (being I am in amateur wrestling) for 2 years, people really do not care what you look like. People tend to have thoughts about the newbee, and some talk amongst themselves, but after a manner of a few visits, it wears off.
Plus, after having a dedicated schedule for some months, pretty soon your body is going to get really used to it, and it will be like "in your blood."
My best advise if you want to gain muscle, is to start light and simple. Work your way up. Don\'t opt for the biggest and heaviest of weights, and do like 1-2 reps. You\'ll never see results.
My scheduele consists of 4 days every other day in the gym for 2-3 hours of gruelsm workouts. I usually do about 20-25 different things at 4-5 sets. I have 4 runs throughout the week consisting of 10 miles too. But, that\'s just the nature of wrestling in general. No way am I encouraging you to run 10 miles and what not.
Plus, you are going to definitely see a significant difference between people who want to look good and are trying to not be fat, and the people who dedicate themselves to this stuff, like me. There is not 1 day that goes by that I do not work for at least 2 hours. I have almost no body fat on my arms and calves, and about 8% 1-inch from my waist. But most of all, this is what I love to do. This was my desire as a kid to be this person in mind.
A diet is also extremely ideal. I have been eating no junk food and just really un-healthy foods for about 2 and a half years. After awhile, the cravings just wear out. I never look at cakes and say, "man, I wish I had a piece of that right now."
Before you even take out the check book is question yourself, "Am I mentally prepared? Am I willing to have the patience to learn as well as accept small gains over time? Are my goals realistic?" You are going to have days when you don\'t feel like you worked hard, you will make mistakes. That\'s just the reality of it.

There is no way I could survive on this earth without eating meat.

Yeah, we know you like to eat meat! :D
Thanks for the tips jm!

Piss off Samwise.
Alittle bit of meat never hurt anyone.
-
Long time ago I was vegetarian for 2 years. Instead of meat I ate alot of cheese. -> I suggest you never do that. Cheese makes
ppl fat. Now I\'m almost at the end of my diet program and I lost about 61 Lbs since begin August.
I went from 215 Lbs to 154 Lbs ! You can of course eat cheese, but keep it as minimal as possible. Eat meat (NOT fat meat like bacon - rather eat chicken or low fat beef)! That combined with cardio running will make your body get in shape.
-
I\'m busy right now, but here\'s some foods that are high in protein and low in fat;
Canned tuna
Chicken Breast
Round Eye Steak
Skim Milk
those are the staples of the body builders diet.
-
You should add Turkey onto that list, too.
White turkey if you are having it from a whole one, or cold cuts are great too.
-
Aww, don\'t get a hissy fit Racer. I still wub you.
-
So, in relation to red meat, how does tuna rate in the protein department? I am not a fan of high protein diets, as they can really screw with your bodily functions. The way I see it you just need enough protein for your body to recoup from any muscle stress.
Is that right?
-
Don\'t bodybuilders eat lots of pasta too?
-
I like eating tuna, that\'s what I used a few months ago when I tried to lose weight..... And guess what, it worked. :) I just sorta kinda went off course and haven\'t lost much since then, but at least I\'m looking better and feeling better too.
-
Tuna has about 24 grams of protien per can, about equal to a skinless chicken breast, or a steak.
As for high protein diets, they are safe, as long as you keep it below 300 grams a day, because that can put a little bit too much stress on your GI system.
Also, as mentioned above turkey is good for high protein and low fat. Also lean ham is good, 2% fat ground beef is alright, but not great. Most fish is pretty lean.
To answer the pasta question. Most BBers try to stay away from the pastas, but stamina athletes gobble the stuff up like there\'s no tomarrow. However, after a show some BBers will carbo load with pasta (usually they\'ll be on a cyclical ketogenic diet, if they carbo load)
-
What are your veiws on eggs theomen?
-
So, BB\'s don\'t have high carb diets? I always, always, thought that carb\'s were important for their energy levels.
Carbs would pack on the fat though, but also still make you bigger right?
-
most BBers do something close to a 40% protein, 50% Carbs, 10% Fat diet. Considering that carbs are in soooo many foods, it\'s actually pretty low. but what alot of them do now is the cyclical ketogenic diet, where they have less than 20g\'s of carbs per day, but eat around 200-500 on the weekend, as a carbo load, so that they have energy for the week. And Actually w/ the CKD, once your body goes into ketosis, you\'ll have ample energy, so the carbs aren\'t really neccecary for energy.
As for eggs, I believe that they can be beneficial....well the whites can be, since they have about 4-6 g\'s of protein per serving. However I only eat egg beater type eggs. They have 6g\'s of protein per serving, and ZERO fat and ZERO carbs...doesn\'t get any better than that.
