Title: Vice City impressions?
Post by: Azeroth on October 29, 2002, 01:08:48 PM
Well i haven\'t seen anyone really talking about it (i mean people who got it today) so i thought a thread like this would be a good idea, since us europeans have to wait an extra week or so for it, we would love to hear your opinions about it.

So insert impressions here

The cars handle better. They are, on average, cooler looking and make much better engine sounds. My only gripe about it is I cannot seem to tell them apart by how they handle as well as I could the cars in GTA3. The motorcycles are simply great.

Cops are much harder to avoid. When I get a one star wanted level in GTA3, I rarely ever have to watch my back. Cops are everywhere in Vice City with a one star wanted level. By the way, you immediately get a two star wanted level when you walk into the locker room in the police station :D

I\'m a bit mixed on the visuals. The draw distance is greater, but the graphics seem to be harder on the eyes.

As for the city environment, I wouldn\'t comment on it\'s size just yet, but I actually prefer the atmosphere and look in modern-day Liberty City.

Overall, You would be a fool not to get this game if you own a Ps2. Great stuff.

I have the game sitting next to me right now, but haven\'t played it yet.  I figured I should eat first, cause I won\'t stop to eat when I start playing this bad boy.

Only played for an hour so far.  I had to stop so I could make dinner...french toast...mmmm.  Haven\'t done a mission yet, just been exploring.  Graphics are better, and there\'s a map when you pause that will surely prove useful, complete with "you are here."

The motorcycles are great!  I was on a sportbike for a minute, until I got it stuck (don\'t ask).  The moped is hilarious.  It\'s called the "Faggio".  It\'s a blast to drive, despite the insensitive yet amusing name.  When you back up you have to push it with both your feet.  Also, if you\'re on a motorcycle and you run into a stationary object, you do indeed go flying over the handlebars.  The radio stations are great, too!  Of course, I love 80s music.

Only thing that was bothersome so far was a long loading time, but it\'s a large environment...so I\'ll live.

I tried to rob a jewelry store. I beat down the clerk instantly getting a 2 star wanted level, but I didn\'t get any cash from the register and I couldn\'t get at any of the merchandise. wtf.

Definatly noticable improvements and a vastly bigger game.  This game is everything it was hyped up to be, best part is, cruising around was never more fun!

After playing it for 5 hours....i\'m impressed.  Motorcycles are a blast to drive, but real easy to crash.  Graphics are great and while the framerate isn\'t smooth as silk, at least it\'s consistent.  Vice City is very large (and mostly locked, you only can run around 1/4 of the map at first.)  The map feature is nice when you pause the game.  You can zoom in and out and move around the map to see it in as much detail as you want.

Held up a few stores (hardware, food joint) with a handgun.  To rob a store you can\'t beat down the clerk immediately.  You gotta aim a gun at them (without shooting) until you see your money total increase.  Just completed a cool ass mission with a remote control vehicle of some sort (don\'t want to say exactly what, you\'ll find out when you play).

Btw if the graphics hurt your eyes, i heard you should set the blur trails off  in options.

A question.

Is the game steering wheel compatible?

I remember when there was that thread asking what people would like to see in the next GTA game. I said that I would like it to be steering wheel compatible.

Is it, or is it not?
Title: Vice City impressions?
Post by: Mr. Kennedy on October 30, 2002, 04:15:25 AM
No, but it\'s hardly neccesary.  Would pain you in most missions you have to do by foot.

A steering wheel would make using the sniper rifle hard to use.

I meant that the steering wheel would/could be used for the driving aspect of the game, while the controller would be used for the rest. I didn\'t mean that the wheel was used for EVERYTHING.

Great game. The motorcycles are wonderful. Missions are yet still the same but wonderful all around. LOTS of stuff to do. I see myself on this game till I die also.
This game kicks ass.

The missions are much more cinematic. That mission where you had to protect Diaz and that other guy from the Haitians was superbly done. The motorcycle chase was a nice touch.

My only gripe now is that I couldn\'t find any gangs on the first island. I would be very disappointed if there are fewer than 5 gangs total. GTA3 had 7 gangs.

Right now, I\'m just trying to buy some property. Any property.

You can actually buy property?
Title: Vice City impressions?
Post by: johnyaya on October 30, 2002, 03:31:04 PM
Yes, you can buy apartments, houses, a strip club, other businesses...etc.

I haven\'t gotten anywhere near that far yet, though. Some
of the places you buy are save points/garages, while others
generate money for you.

Just when I think the game can\'t get any better, somebody tells me something that makes me think it is.

I just bought an apartment building. I can\'t collect rent or anything. It\'s just a save point with a measly one car garage. I think I could have used my $7,000 more wisely.

Yea some places dont make sense worth buying. Although later in the game it may make more sense. Im only at about 7%.

this game is amazing....altho i dont want to waste anymore typing when I could be playing. This game is better than GTA3 in every way and that says alot. Motercycles are finally back, the game is amazing going in stores awesone just driving around is cool missions seem a bit more complex and way more fun then in GTA3. GET THIS GAME. NOW! Now im back to play till my thumbs fall off, then i can use that as an excuse to skip school tomorrow and play more.

I cant find any frickin stores to go into! I actually rode around for like ten minutes trying to find one to rob and with no prevail. wtf? Whats the deal?
Title: Vice City impressions?
Post by: Event Horizon on October 30, 2002, 05:42:44 PM
Robbing stores isn\'t very lucrative. The only store I found I could rob is The Jewelers, and I usually get no more than $50 without being noticed. Hopefully, there are banks in the game, and they only put crap stores like The Jewelers in Vice City as a warm up.

I can\'t wait to buy the condo penthouse.  with 3 parking spaces in the garage...and the best part, a heli-pad on the roof complete with your own personal helicopter!

And there is at least one gang on the first island i\'ve found.  They hang around the small housing area near the river, you can see the skyscraper built in the background.

And I hate the blurry trails left behind moving objects.  I know the first game had them but they are shown IN FORCE in VC.  Turning off the trails makes the graphics much improved in clarity and crispness.  Back to playing....

The Condo Penthouse? Ive only found the condo, for 4,000. Didnt decide to buy it although I may cause it gets annoying having to go ALL the way back to my apartment complex to save.
This game kicks all ass.
Title: Vice City impressions?
Post by: JBean on October 30, 2002, 10:09:50 PM
Well this condo penthouse is 14,000 and it\'s on the second island.  And let me tell you how fukin cool it is to fly those helicopters.  There are 2 or 3 rooftops with helicopters on them.  I\'ve flown the green police chopper and the blue news chopper, and really they fly the same.  They are touchy but i\'m so glad now that I can fly over the city without much effort.  I tried to find a normal airplane using the news chopper but maybe they don\'t show up until a few more missions are completed.  The second island opened up sooner than I expected.
Title: Vice City impressions?
Post by: Proud To Be on October 30, 2002, 10:57:20 PM
I kinda figured the second island wold open up kinda quick considering they were only closed because of a "storm warning."
Anyway, I havent really explored the second island yet but the airport would be the first place I would look. Im recently trying to beat \'death row.\' Its a pain in the ass.
These missions are further in-depth then GTA3, some of them are even sneaky type covert ops. Then theres others that are just strait bust in and start shooting, and hopefully your the one that comes out alive type deal.
Title: Vice City impressions?
Post by: Azeroth on October 31, 2002, 03:10:11 AM
Yeah i\'ve heard "death row" is kinda like a right of passage :D

I think I robbed a pizza place...didn\'t get me much.
However, what\'s really lucrative is heading to the mall/crowded
areas, and watching for cops chasing down peds. If you go
hit the ped (don\'t know if shooting works, though), you get
$50 for being a "Good Citizen". If you continue to beat them
down while they are on the ground, you get $50 for every
kick, until their body disappears...

Can someone tell me if the apartment that you buy (1108
something-or-other street) that costs $3K has a garage? It\'s
just a save point, but maybe I didn\'t look for a garage hard
enough. I really want to save one of those dirtbikes...
Title: Vice City impressions?
Post by: Proud To Be on October 31, 2002, 11:22:15 AM
Those dirtbikes arent easy to find. Although I did find out there kinda easier if you ride near the dirtbike courses. Thats where I found most of mine. Cant wait to get into the memorial stadium. Hell yes.

I traded Capcom Gun Valkiyre for GTA3: Vice City. It\'s better than GTA 3 (which I hated) - but I think I am just digging this one because of the 80\'s music and setting. As far as completing missions, I\'m just not very inclinded to do it.

-shrugs-
Title: Vice City impressions?
Post by: JBean on November 01, 2002, 04:57:25 PM
This missions have been so varied and at times difficult it actually makes me want to complete more of them.  VC does a better job fleshing out it\'s characters..and the voice acting is great.  I\'m also not using any codes at all this time.  I used the ammo and health codes from the get-go in GTA3 and now I really wish I didn\'t...it makes the game much more challenging.
Title: Vice City impressions?
Post by: Proud To Be on November 01, 2002, 06:48:19 PM
I have my own personal thing about using cheats. I usually go through the game at least once and beat it before I think about using cheat codes for it. I want to get into the game the first time around then get into the complete effect of the game, taking it to the fullest. I find it to be much better that way. Hell, I went through GTA3 about four times, and the last time I went all out and got 100%. Hell yea, what an accomplishment lemme tell you, took me a VERY long time.

Just looking at the old VC threads, i have no idea why i though this, must have been in a bad mood.

And Kurt those Army men forums are just amazing for inside info on the army if you know what i mean, hell i dont know what i mean - it started out as a homo erotic joke and failed, i need San Andreas, good night all
