Title: I\'ve got Ratchet and Clank....Muaa..haa..haa
Post by: Paul on November 04, 2002, 07:20:40 PM
Okay, just a first impression on this game, since I don\'t have much time playing it.

Graphics - what can I say, this is definitely the state of the art PS2 platformer graphics. There can be tons of objects on screen and there\'s no slowdown anywhere. Frame rate is at constant 60fps. When u killed a monster, there burst into lots of gears of various sizes which are all fully rendered 3D objects. The texture is nice, detailed and clean and the game really do look as sharp as some of the screenshot seen in this forum. There is some problem with the camera angle when ratchet goes into a certain wall near a building and he was blocked behind some stuff(I think it was flowers of sorts). Anyway, I haven\'t seen a single 3D platformer who doesn\'t suffers from some sort of camera angle yet.

Sound - a bit of dissapointment since there\'s no support for Dobly Pro logic nor DD5.1/DTS. But then again, not many game does, for a typical stereo game, it does the job.

Gameplay - really to early to tell, I\'m only on the 2nd world so far and I\'d managed to throw wrenches, bombs and this cool flame thrower. But so far, it\'s pretty enjoyable. I watched the demo and Ratchet seems to be able to do a lot more at later levels.

Control - is genrally good except the right analog stick which is used to shift the camera angle. it use the reverse method..u push right and it swings left and vice versa. I hated this kind of scheme, but maybe there\'s some option in the controller menu to adjust this. Not sure yet.

Other than that, this game have lots of cutscenes which is all pretty humorous and adds a lot to the game atmosphere and character.

maybe I\'ll post more impression a few days later when I\'ve more time with the game.

Ask any question you want to know!!

How\'s the loading?
Is the intro good?
Where do you live? It doesn\'t release until Wednesday here in the California.
Is there a wide-screen options?

Thanks for the impression!

The loading time is pretty short I guess, I can\'t remember it, so it must be short!

Anyway, I\'ve only been to 3 worlds so far. The first world was quite small(sort of intro), the 2nd is a bit larger and now I\'m on the third, but I\'ve no idea how big it is. But frankly, I prefer small world...if the game world is too large, it\'s kinda easy to lose focus on what ur suppose to do.

The intro is pretty okay, real-time rendered cut scenes with nice humor throw all around...I definitely prefer clank as a side kick than Dexter in J&D...(the lizard is damn annoying).

Nope there\'s no wide screen option. And I usually can get my games early coz I got connections....Mua..haa..haaa!!!

It supports DLII, I think.. It supports the same sound as RLII on the GC anyway.

So what\'s this stereo bullshit that Paul is spouting out?

I remember reading it supported DLII and thought it was amazing, considering the visuals.  J&D didn\'t even have DLII.

Paul, is this game graphically better than Jak & Daxter? If yes, then I\'m impressed.. :)

Yes it is, I\'ve played it aswell. It\'s not one of those games that strike you as "great" though.

I played the demo last month and I must say it looks and plays impresively. Huge draw distances and no slowdown. This is going to be a big game.

Nope, there\'s no Dobly XXXX nuthin. Just ur good old mono and stereo.

If u want Dobly ProLogic, try Burnout2 and NFS:HP2.

I will say the graphics is just slightly better than J&D. It\'s sharper and there\'s no frame drops even when there\'s quite a lot of object on screen. J&D suffers from significant slowdown in certain stages. Also the graphics is much much sharper. In fact, it\'s one of the sharpest looking PS2 games around since Mark of Kri.

Anyway, I beat another world and now armed with more gadgets including a helipcopter like thingy on Clank and a slingshot.
So now ratchet can fly(just a bit), glide and throw slingshot(which works like the bionic arm of Bionic Commando..if ur old enough to remember that CAPCOM game :).

One thing though, the game seems to be a bit on the easy side. i think J&D is tougher than this, but what I like better is the mission is clear cut...I like my platformers nice and simple.

Oh, most of the worlds I\'ve been to, there\'s always tons of 3D spaceship/cars flying about in the sky shooting at each other or something. It really feels like a sci fi city!!!

Thanks for your impressions Paul. BTW; check your copy of Jak & Daxter, as yours might be defect, because this game should have absolutely no slowdown at all. ;)

Ace, the game seems to be a few times longer than J&D. I got everything on J&D by the second day, almost done the same on R&C after a week. There are also 18 worlds to visit :D

I\'ve purchased R&C this evening, i\'ve played a couple of hours and it\'s actually great. I\'ll give a deeper review later.
